We are reviving -- and reinventing -- the Advent calendar as an art form.
Since the 1800s, people have used Advent calendars to count down to Christmas. Traditional Advent calendars were richly-crafted, beautiful keepsakes. But in recent years, Advent calendars became forgettable and dull.
ONE NIGHT is different. Inspired by a revered episode from the Book of Luke, ONE NIGHT tells the story of the first Christmas as you've never seen it before -- with beautiful illustration, lush calligraphy, and riveting narration that will transport you to first-century Bethlehem.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
ONE NIGHT tells a story in 24 parts. Each part of the story is hidden behind a numbered door (1 through 24) that you open to reveal an illustration and text. You can open one door each day, from December 1 through December 24, counting down to Christmas. Or you can binge-watch, by reading all 24 parts in one sitting, like an illustrated book.
Printed on heavy-weight paper wrapped around millboard, ONE NIGHT is a sturdy, free-standing triptych that you can place on a mantle, table or windowsill as an amazing Christmas decoration. You can also close the triptych and keep ONE NIGHT on your bookshelf or coffee table.
SO THIS ADVENT CALENDAR TELLS A STORY?
Yes. The Book of Luke (2:8-20) says that on the night of the first Christmas angels visited shepherds tending their flocks and told them to visit their newborn savior. ONE NIGHT reimagines the story through the eyes of one of the shepherds.
Set against the turbulent backdrop of ancient Judea under Roman rule, ONE NIGHT follows the shepherd as he risks his flock to journey through the countryside in search of the baby Messiah -- and the elusive promises of worldly and spiritual redemption.
There is a long and diverse artistic tradition of imagining the story of the shepherds. In our telling, we have tried to capture what it would have really been like to be there the night Jesus was born, and how a regular person might have tried to make sense of that extraordinary event. The story is intense, exciting -- and even a little spooky.
It's a feeling that's echoed in the stunning visual art. Rendered in the style of a classical draftsman, ONE NIGHT feels like an ancient document, full of timeless drama and mystery.
Whether you know the Bible inside out, or you haven't read it since you were a kid, we hope ONE NIGHT will surprise and move you with its riveting portrayal of its characters' search for goodness and a better world.
WHO IS THIS ADVENT CALENDAR FOR?
If you celebrate Christmas, this Advent calendar is for you.
The story and artwork are pitched at an adult level. But kids (even little ones) will be able to follow and enjoy the story. Our hope is that ONE NIGHT will be enjoyed by families, couples, singles, teenagers, young people, old people, church groups, coworkers -- really anyone who celebrates Christmas and enjoys a good story.
If you celebrate Christmas, you're celebrating the advent of Jesus. (The word "advent" means "arrival.") Some churches also celebrate a season called Advent, which roughly coincides with the month leading up to Christmas. The Advent calendar is a folk tradition used both by people who keep the formal season of Advent, and also by people who are simply counting down to the advent of Jesus, or Christmas.
So whatever your practice, an Advent calendar is a great way to get excited for the holiday. And ONE NIGHT is an awesome Advent calendar.
We've been working on ONE NIGHT for three years. From script to storyboard to illustration, calligraphy, and finally production specs, getting this ambitious, unique Advent calendar off the ground has been an incredible team effort.
Rachael Clarke Hendel hand-illustrated every image in ONE NIGHT, using pen, ink and charcoal. Rachael is a painter, currently pursuing her M.F.A. in Oregon.
Adam Farbiarz adapted the story and directed the project. Adam is a freelance art director based in Brooklyn, New York. His commercial projects (two of which were funded on Kickstarter -- here and here) are viewable at dearadamobjects.com.

We're done with the hard part. Now comes the expensive part. All the art, calligraphy, design, packaging, and even the final, printer-ready files are complete. All that's left is for us to pay the printer.
To get us over the finish line, we are asking for your support. For $30 (+ shipping) we will send you a copy of ONE NIGHT. If we hit our funding goal, you will receive your copy of ONE NIGHT this November. ONE NIGHT is available this Christmas (2018) exclusively on Kickstarter. Next Christmas (2019), we expect to retail ONE NIGHT for $40.
ONE NIGHT is being printed on heavy-weight paper wrapped around millboard. It has 24 doors of varying sizes and shapes. And it's big. Closed, ONE NIGHT measures 16" x 18". Open, ONE NIGHT is 16" x 36"-- that's three feet across. Making something this unique requires considerable expertise. We're working with an industry-leading paper engineering shop to get the job done. Your support will enable us to make ONE NIGHT a physical reality.
We've worked, brainstormed, and vetted ideas with dozens of people to make ONE NIGHT happen. We are grateful for all of the generous guidance we have received.
A special thanks to Adam Douglas Thompson, aesthetic godfather.
And to Aysu Farbiarz for her discerning eye, endless wisdom, support, humor and love.
