About this project
HEIR is a disturbing, thought provoking PRACTICAL FX driven horror short film from FATAL PICTURES, the team behind the the critically acclaimed, award winning shorts CONSUMPTION, WORM and FAMILIAR. FATAL PICTURES is a Canadian film production company consisting of Writer/Director Richard Powell, recently named one of ten "On the rise indie genre directors who should be on your radar" by FEARNET, and Producer Zach Green, who along with Richard where named one of ten "Canadian genre filmmakers to look out for" by PLANETFURY.COM. With three successful shorts under our belts the obvious next step is feature films, but there is still one last short film that wants, needs, demands to be made. This is that film...
After connecting with a stranger of similar interests online, Gordon and his young son Paul, embark on an ill-fated road trip in which Gordon aims to indulge a secret passion. Before the day ends a horrible truth will be uncovered and a harsh lesson will be learned. HEIR is a monster movie unlike any other, it is a bleak and fantastical examination of one of societies darkest taboos that aims to stimulate the mind and wrench the gut with equal power.
HEIR star Robert Nolan speaks about the film and our past collaborations.
Starring the kings of indie horror Emmy Award Winner BILL OBERST JR and ROBERT NOLAN, and Produced in association with RED SNEAKERS MEDIA, creators of REMOTE, THE ELUSIVE MAN and THE SWEETEST HIPPOPOTAMUS, HEIR has a great pedigree of talent attached. In addition to these new collaborators several trusted artists are returning to help us craft the ultimate horror short including FAMILIAR's Cinematographer MICHAEL JARI DAVIDSON, SPECIAL FX team, THE BUTCHERSHOP and Composer BERNIE GREESPOON. For a better understanding of the passion and skill of these filmmakers, WATCH FAMILIAR AT THE LINK BELOW!
Our goal is not only to create a chillingly memorable short film but to demonstrate what can be done after a film is funded. Our supporters will see the film they helped make in festivals around the world, in print and in distribution. That is our commitment, to produce one of the most successful crowd funded film projects to date, but in order for that to happen we need the assistance of film lovers and filmmakers just like you. Check out what Horror Cult Star Bill Oberst Jr has to say about HEIR and his involvement in the project!
In order to reassure our supporters that HEIR has the goods, Fatal Pictures reached out to a cross section of the horror community for feedback on the HEIR screenplay. Check out what they had to say!
"HEIR promises to deliver a disgusting dose of Lovecraftian body-horror that will make you squirm in more ways than one!"- Jason Thorson, editor-in-chief of RavenousMonster.com
"A monstrous spin on an all-too-familiar tale of bad parenting." - Alyse Wax, FEARnet
"Considering Familiar, its last work, I would say that Fatal Pictures will definitely bring us, with Heir, a must-see short film. Graphically shocking and original with its body modifications, i would bet it'll be a great masterpiece. The horror in its very best form: disturbing and unique." - Nicolas Tonsho, Fantaspoa International Film Festival
"Ever since I had the pleasure of screening FAMILIAR last year, I became an instantaneous fan of Richard Powell and his work. Richard's ability to tell powerful stories in short film format is incredible" - Heather Wixson, Founder - CineMayhem Film Festival
"With HEIR, Fatal Pictures have planned a stunning and memorable swansong. Set to delve into darker and more grotesque avenues than they have even ventured before, HEIR is certainly going to be another sucker punch from one of the most exciting independent studios out there. Be afraid, because you most definitely won’t be prepared." - Colin McCracken, Zombie Hamster
"Powell is an unflinching examiner of the perversion of humanity that is born of our deepest fears, doubts, regrets and hidden hurts. He reminds us we walk among the wounded and mutated every day." - Dave Pace Bonello, Horror Journalist
"Powell and his producing partner Zach Green are breaking new and horrific ground with HEIR. This project shows that the pair's festival monster FAMILIAR was no fluke; Powell and Green are in the vanguard of horror's new cinematic masters. HEIR is an honest-to- God, bonafide new notion of terror." - Bill Oberst Jr.
"Powell's script for HEIR is so compelling, so fascinating, I just can't wait any longer to finally see the film" - Maynard Morrissey, Horror Movie Diary
FATAL PICTURES: WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE'VE DONE
FATAL PICTURES is a Canadian film team consisting of Writer/Director Richard Powell and Producer Zach Green. Check out Richard and Zach speaking about WORM, FAMILIAR and the foundation of Fatal Pictures following a screening of WORM at Toronto Screamfest 2010.
Together we have produced three self financed short films which have each gone on to earn critical praise, awards, world wide festival appearances and distribution. In order to understand what we aim to do with HEIR, we felt it would be helpful to demonstrate what we've accomplished with past projects.
Our first short, a clinical look at the phenomenon of consensual cannibalism. CONSUMPTION played nearly 20 International film festivals and has been distributed by both OUAT MEDIA and AMERICAN HORRORS. The winner of five short film awards including Best Short, Best Director and Best Special FX. Find CONSUMPTION on FACEBOOK and IMDB
Here are a few quotes about the film; "an uncomfortably great film" - Critical Film "as dark and morbid a short film as you are going to find" - Rogue Cinema "a must for those who are interested in nihilistic, cannibalistic and repulsive flicks" - Flick Fanatic
Our second and considerably more ambitious short film, WORM. Shot on 16mm Film in a High School, WORM depicts one disturbing day in the life of unstable teacher Geoffrey Dodd (Robert Nolan). WORM earned Fatal Pictures multiple film awards, 30 plus Film Festival screenings and over a hundred positive reviews(read them HERE). WORM currently has TV distribution with AMERICAN HORRORS and will serve as the basis for a feature adaption in the near future. Find WORM on FACEBOOK and IMDB
Here's what a few of the critics had to say about WORM; "a truly remarkable short film, a movie that operates on more levels than most like-minded feature-length endeavors" - Beyond Hollywood "hooked me from the very opening scene and didn’t let up until the credits rolled" - Daily Grindhouse "Worm is akin to being dragged through a scintillating cesspool and that's a sincere compliment" - Apocalypse Later
FAMILIAR is our third and latest short film. It is still active on the festival circuit and can also be seen in full on FEARNET where it has been signed for a 3 year distribution run and has already been a STAFF PICK!. The short has played roughly 50 international film festivals including the FANTASIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, NEW YORK CITY HORROR FILM FEST and the TELLURIDE HORROR SHOW to name a few. FAMILIAR has recieved nearly 200 rave reviews including FANGORIA, DREAD CENTRAL, RUE MORGUE and AINT IT COOL NEWS (Read them HERE). The film even had the honor of receiving in print articles in both FANGORIA and RUE MORGUE magazines. IN 2012 FAMILIAR made it onto 7 year end Best of Lists. Find FAMILIAR on FACEBOOK and IMDB
Here are a few quotes regarding FAMILIAR;"Fantastically acted, suspensfully shot and gruellingly written, I can't reccomend Familiar enough" - Ain't it cool news "Chilling, carefully controlled mini-masterpiece" - Fangoria "One of the smartest, creepiest and most unrelenting short films Ive had the pleasure of viewing as of late" - Dread Central
THE HEIR TEAM
You can't make a great film without a great team of artists and for HEIR we have stacked the deck. The amount of skill ready to make HEIR a reality is incredible and will gurantee a level of craft and reliability that will make every supporter proud to be involved!
HEIR will feature the incredibly talented horror actors BILL OBERST JR and ROBERT NOLAN, who's work in the genre has earned them multiple awards and rave reviews. HEIR will be their first time meeting on screen and we predict the results will be fabulously creepy.
BILL OBERST JR is most widely-known as the face of director Jason Zada's Take This Lollipop, awarded a 2012 Daytime Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the category of "New Approaches-Daytime Entertainment." Oberst has been seen by over 100 million viewers worldwide in the role of a predatory online stalker in the interactive application for Facebook users.
He is the recipient of the 2012 Golden Cobb Award for Best Rising B-Movie Actor and the 2012 Best Actor Award from Hollywood's Shockfest Film Festival. He shared a 2012 Best Ensemble Acting Award from Sacramento Horror Film Festival and shared a 2012 Best Ensemble Acting Award from Phoenix Film Festival for The Retrieval.
His other awards include a 2013 Monstey Award for Great Historical Monster Moments and a 2012 Baddest Villain Award from ZedFest Film Festival. A 2012 British fan poll for the site Erebus Horror named Oberst as King Of Indie Horror.
ROBERT NOLAN is a Toronto based actor who has been a key part of Fatal Picture's development. Our first collaboration with Robert was 2010's WORM, a short film which earned him countless rave reviews thanks to his incredible and horrific performance as the psychotic teacher Geoffrey Dodd.
Our next collaboration with Robert Nolan was FAMILIAR, where he once again turned in a magnetic performance. Robert has earned multiple acting awards for his work in WORM and FAMILIAR and he continues to receive critical praise to this day for his turn as the Dodd brothers.
Robert's addition to the cast of HEIR is great news and guarantees the film will deliver top notch acting of a quality rarely seen in independent film, let alone short independent film.
SPECIAL FX: THE BUTCHERSHOP
In addition securing two powerful lead performances, HEIR will feature a host of stomach churning PRACTICAL FX. It is our belief that this union of story, performance and visceral, tangible SPECIAL FX creates a stunning and memorable horror experience that stimulates the mind while sending shivers down the spine!
To help us realize our horrific vision we have once again enlisted the help of the super talented FX team RYAN LOUAGIE and CARLOS HENRIQUES, otherwise known as THE BUTCHERSHOP! Check out their reel of work above featuring clips from our two of our previous works; CONSUMPTION and FAMILIAR!
