“That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.”

An unspeakable horror, something beyond reality itself, is haunting humanity. In the shadows, those dwell who wish to spread madness and destruction. Are you one of those ready to awaken ancient powers in the the depth? Will you help to bring forth the end of the world?

The classic story by H.P. Lovecraft, as it never has been seen before.

H.P. Lovecraft is a giant of horror literature and popular culture. Since the 1920s his short stories and novels has spellbound generations and influenced countless games, comics, novels, records and films. His short story The Call of Cthulhu, written in 1926 and first published in Weird Tales in 1928, is an absolute classic. Now, french artist François Baranger presents the ultimate illustrated version of the story.

By backing this project you will help fund the English edition of the book that has already been a smash hit in several European countries.

A portion of the funds will go directly to the artist himself and will allow him to continue his work in creating more amazing illustrations of Lovecraft’s tales.

If the campaign goes well we will publish several exclusive new art prints of Baranger’s hand painted images, and even design a complete roleplaying game based on Lovecraft’s original tales and Baranger’s art.

The book is in a large format (262 x 350 mm) so that the beautiful paintings can be poured over in every detail, making it a perfect coffee table book or an exclusive gift. Printed in Europe on thick high quality paper (Lumasilk 170g paper), thread-bound and with thick sturdy covers this is a deluxe edition of an all-time classic.

Boston, 1926. Francis Thurston goes through documents left behind by his grandfather’s brother, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances. He soon discovers the existence of a cult that worships ancient and unspeakable horrors.

Mysterious murders, blood rituals in the depths of the Louisiana swamps, artists who descend into insanity after nightmarish visions, and a Cyclopean city that rises from the sea. Step by step, Thurston realizes that his relative’s research got too close to the truth. In the shadows, there are those who want to wake the sleeping god Cthulhu in order to spread madness and destruction over the entire world.

The stars are right. Is the end near?

Written in 1926 and originally published in Weird Tales in 1928, The Call of Cthulhu is one of Lovecraft’s most iconic short stories. This edition uses the original manuscript text edited by noted Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi.

François Baranger, born in 1970, is a multi-faceted artist and illustrator. He works primarily as a concept illustrator for films (Harry Potter, The Clash of the Titans, Beauty and the Beast) and computer games (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls). He has also illustrated a number of book covers. In 2013, he wrote his first science fiction novel, Dominium Mundi, and in 2017, he wrote the thriller The Domino Effect.

It was during his early years that he discovered Lovecraft, mainly thanks to role-playing games. Ever since, he has had a passionate interest in fantasy worlds in general, and for those created by a certain writer from Providence in particular. After dreaming for years about seeing an illustrated version of Lovecraft's works, Baranger finally decided to create one himself, and chose the most classic short story of them all, The Call of Cthulhu.

“Like many people, I got to know Lovecraft through the role-playing game Call of Cthulhu, when it had just arrived in France in the late 1980’s. In a way, I even started reading the stories with the idea of becoming a better player at the RPG!  Of course, I was immediately attracted by the universe and by the author's unique style. And I never really forgot it. Even if sometimes I allowed long periods of time to pass without reading it, I always came back to it one day or another.”

“As I have always drawn, I immediately began to try to translate Lovecraft's universe into images. At first, still influenced by the RPG universe, I rather intended to make a creature bestiary. Then, as the years went by, the idea of creating an illustrated version of his short stories gradually replaced the original intention. There is a lot of "fan art" inspired by Lovecraft on the net, and, even if there are some very beautiful images, I’ve never seen any that corresponded to my vision of this universe. Something more sober, less RPG, more movie like. So, one day, I made the step. Since no one had tried a fully illustrated version yet, it was up to me to do it!”

“The widespread opinion that Lovecraft is a writer of suggestion, of the unspeakable is, in my opinion, limited. Even if this aspect is very present in his works (things hidden in the shadows, which cannot be described because they drive those who see them mad), there is another part of his style that I would describe as “epic”. Descriptions of gigantic, sorry, "cyclopean" creatures, and lost cities of biblical proportions abound in some short stories, and sometimes as well as descriptions teeming with details. The Call of Cthulhu, like most great short stories, falls into this category. How many times when I read it did I dream of seeing these literary images translated visually, especially on the big screen? To sum up, even if it is true that the suggested aspect of Lovecraft is difficult to translate into illustration, this is not the case with the epic aspect which, on the contrary, lends itself very well to this.”

“As I’m a concept artist for the movie industry, I proceeded as for the pre-production of a film. In a way, I acted as if Lovecraft were a movie director who had just hired me to create the concept art of his story. So I re-read the story as if it were a script, selecting the parts that it was important to illustrate, then I sorted it out so that the project would be viable (I couldn't make 120 illustrations as I had to do on some productions, otherwise the book would have taken ten years of work and the price would have been much higher...). As with any director, I tried to slip into the author's mind (in visual terms, I mean) in order to best transcribe his universe. That's why, in the end, my version is very faithful ; I didn't try to modernize Lovecraft, but to stick to its descriptions, to the letter.”

“In technical terms, I have not used a process different from my work habits. I start with very simple black and white sketches. When I have one that suits me, I try to find the light and color range. Light is very important to me, it often conditions the composition, for example. Then I move on to the actual execution, which is entirely digital. I paint on a tablet, in Photoshop. Once the image is quite complete, I enhance some parts with photo textures, taking care to blend them well into the illustration. One of the common flaws of digital illustration is the poor integration of the different techniques used. I'm trying to be very careful about that.”

For some pictures, François Baranger makes a hand-painted version for an upcoming exhibition on his work.

H.P. Lovecraft, born 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island, died 1937, was an American writer mainly known for his influential horror novels. Although he achieved limited success during his lifetime, his reputation has grown over the years. Lovecraft's so-called cosmic horror touched on themes such as man's inadequacy and the horror of the incomprehensible and indifferent universe surrounding us.

With short stories like The Call of Cthulhu, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and The Shadow over Innsmouth, Lovecraft laid the foundation of a mythology, which, over the years, has been studied and developed by a number of successors. The short novel At the Mountains of Madness is perhaps his most ambitious work, and has been on its way to the silver screen several times, without success. Lovecraft's characteristic prose, heavy on adjectives, grand imagination, and his frantic storytelling technique have formed a school, and his legacy in popular culture is unprecedented. Along with Edgar Allen Poe, Lovecraft is undoubtedly one of the greatest horror writers of his time.
