About this project
Piece is a story about conflict, the conflict between faith and science and between terror and freedom. Spanning a decade and encompassing journeys by planes, trains and automobiles, Piece itself is also a journey; a journey that culminates in events that will shake the world.
Our protagonist is a traveling man and we first meet him in an airport as he embarks upon a potentially career changing journey. As he gets ready to board his flight, he relates, through a letter he is writing, two other journeys he has made; two journeys in which a chance encounter has lead, inadvertently, to the battleground where ideologies clash.
As he relates to us these past journeys and previous skirmishes, we discover more about his beliefs and the beliefs that shape the people around him and us. Through this process we are given a chance to question our own place in the ever shifting landscape that is the ongoing dialogue between religion and reason.
Our aim for Piece is to create a high-end festival short. We feel that the source material and subject matter demands the highest level of filmmaking to bring it to life, and to create something special. The film won't be released online, so the only way you'll get to view it is to attend a festival screening, or by selecting one of our rewards and becoming part of the team.
We've assembled a team that have the necessary skills in writing, direction and production to do justice to the writing of Iain Banks and the ideas that Piece deals with. You can click on our bio to find out more details about the producers, and the rest of the cast & crew. Iain Banks himself is firmly behind the project, and is lending us his support to make this film the best it can be.
We're currently in the middle of casting, but have already secured the amazing Sean Pertwee and Lucy Clements to our cast, with more exciting announcements to come soon.
Risks and challenges
With a team experienced in low-budget filmmaking, we certainly know how to beg, steal and borrow to get a film made, but there are unfortunately some things that only money can buy, so that's where we need your help.
From the synopsis above you can see that the locations are going to prove especially tricky - an airport, a plane, a train, and a coach - each with logistical as well as financial barriers to overcome. And the film is set in a very specific period in history - so all locations and costumes need to be as historically accurate as we can make them. There's no guerilla style filmmaking on this one - its all about the meticulous planning and production design!
We've got the team on board who can make this happen though - and not only that, too make it look amazing. And obviously for this we're going to need the lights, the cameras, the make-up etc - again, all things that cost money.
This is a non-profit production, so our aim is to put the majority of funds raised up there on screen, with the remaining money for the costly festivals admission process.
All of us are big fans of Iain's work, and feel that more of it needs to be up there on the big screen - so please help us to make it happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
