A three-part horror mystery set in 80s London with a unique interactive element. Can you find the messages hidden in the edit?

EDIT is featured as IndieWire's Project of the Day!

Grace works as a film editor in Soho, the dark heart of eighties London.

Tightly wound, she's in absolute control of her editing booth and loves her job. Low budget exploitation films, horror flicks, student art projects - it doesn’t matter. But something is very wrong.

On horribly scratched frames, disturbing scenes repeat. Scenes that don't belong. As her carefully controlled personal life starts to collapse, Grace becomes convinced that this is no accident. Someone’s sending her a message, hidden in the EDIT.

EDIT was pitched at BAFTA through Stellar Network at the 2012 Cross-Platform Pitch Up and won second place.

Here's the trailer:

What makes Edit really unique is its awesome interactive component.

At the end of each episode, Grace gets her hands on a new selection of clips. She soon realises that they're all part of one disturbing sequence and starts to edit them together, searching for the hidden message.

Between episodes you'll be able to piece together the clips yourself, using an intuitive online editing suite. The order of the clips themselves will be vital - who started the fight? Who's running from who? - and filled with clues.

By start of the the following episode, Grace will have put them all in place and you'll be able to see if you got the order right.

We need your help because there is no other way that a project like Edit would ever happen!

In a few ways, Edit is a pretty niche project - it's a period piece, it's innately online but certainly not viral, and with a focus on interactivity. It's not something that is immediately appealing to everyone - but we're hoping that through Kickstarter we can bring together a group of interested people who think that Edit should be made!

Who we are:

Chris Cornwell - Chris is the writer, co-director and co-producer of the project. He has been working in video and video editing for nearly a decade, and for the last few of those years he was at the BBC. He enjoys walking and taking tomatoes out of sandwiches.

Dan Cornwell - Dan is the co-director and co-writer. Currently studying Drama at the University of York, Dan is a keen director and actor, having directed at the Edinburgh Fringe. He enjoys board-games and fencing.

David King and Anja Aichinger. One of the things that we're really proud of about Edit is the care that's been put in to recreating London in the 1980s - but we couldn't have done any of it without these two. David and Anja are our fantastic artists, who have helped in almost every dimension of the project already: they have both acted, sourced and designed costumes, location-scouted, prop-hunted and crucially created our great rewards. They share a studio in Bermondsey and both have websites that are worth checking out:

www.anjaaichinger.com

www.dking.com

Right now, Anja is working on fifty metre long canvas retelling of the Odyssey, and David is commentating at the Fencing World Championships in Budapest, though he spends the rest of his time working on selected art commissions.

The Rewards

David and Anja have made some really great rewards that you can see listed down on the right hand side. You'll be sent everything in a single batch as soon as all of the physical elements in your tier are available.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

There are lots of things that we already found tough shooting the trailer, that we know are going to be even tougher in shooting the whole series. Finding the right locations, props and costumes to really nail the feel of the 80s is key - the story of Edit is so rooted in that time that it needs to be perfect. Luckily, with our artists and attention to detail, we think that this is achievable, and the reward would be huge - you don't see much period content on the web, so this is another way that Edit would really distinguish itself.

The interactive element however is going to be the biggest challenge - creating a puzzle unlike any other, in which the pieces are clips of footage, is hard enough - put in the fact that it needs multiple solutions that all inform the viewer in a different way about Grace's personality and history, and you've got a real task - however, with Chris's experience in writing and in multimedia for the BBC, we're think that we're the people to do it.

£11,000 is the bare minimum that we think we could make EDIT with, so we're aiming for as much over that as we can - something that was tough filming the trailer was that, due to our limited budget, there were a few compromises we had to make. The more we get funded, the better EDIT will be!

PS many thanks to Kevin Macleod for the track 'Unlight' that we use in the trailers.

One of the most exciting parts of working on EDIT has been getting the chance to use a 16mm EIKI projector. We've decided to give it away along with the two the films we've been watching with friends - Flash Gordon and Sherlock Holmes, and the completed sequence that Grace is working on in the show (details in updates). It's not only has a starring role in the show, but is a beautiful, fascinating piece of kit, which will be yours as well as everything above. We've selected UK backers only, but if you're from outside it, then get in touch and we'll see what we can do!

The first backer to reach £1,000 will receive a really special piece of art kindly donated by our art director David King. It's a print of a photograph he took of Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols, and it features in the show. It's a really amazing piece, and you should read the update called 'Sid 'n' Nancy' to hear the whole story! We've selected UK backers only, but if you're from outside the UK and are interested, please get in touch!
