About this project

Plimpton! tells the story of writer, editor, amateur sportsman and friend to many, George Plimpton. Using Plimpton's own narration – along with thoughts and stories from friends, family and contemporaries – the film is a joyful celebration of a life lived fully, richly, strangely, and, at times, a life that is hard to believe was actually lived by just one man.

Plimpton was the founding editor of The Paris Review literary magazine that launched the careers of Jack Kerouac, Philip Roth, Jay McInerney, and Jonathan Franzen.  He also suited up and joined the Detroit Lions, the Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics, writing about these experiences for Sports Illustrated and best-selling books.  He befriended U.S. Presidents, pitched to Willie Mays in Yankee Stadium, photographed Playboy models, struck the triangle for the New York Philharmonic, and acted alongside John Wayne, Warren Beatty, and Matt Damon.

We interviewed more than 50 people, including Peter Matthiessen, Gay Talese, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mike Milbury, Elaine Kaufman, Robert Silvers, Philip Gourevitch, James Lipton, Jay McInerney and Hugh Hefner. We combed through museums, libraries, magazine archives, and George's own papers and effects, discovering wonderful photographs, films, and audio material that we are now working to license. While some of the archival material has been generously donated for free (or very inexpensive) use in the film by The Paris Review, Sports Illustrated, Phillips Exeter Academy, the Plimpton family, and many others, a good amount of the footage comes with a license fee that we will have to find a way to pay.

We're now in post-production, and intend to premiere this fall or winter.  We've raised a large part of our budget, but there's still a shortfall- that's where you come in.  All the money we raise through this Kickstarter campaign will help us license footage that will bring George's story to life on screen. This campaign is a great way to expand the circle of supporters of the film and enable you to help tell the one-of-a-kind story of George Plimpton.

Thank you for joining us, we're thrilled to have you on our team!
