About this project
/ About Queens /
Queens may be on the rise, but it lacks the buzz that has turned Brooklyn into a global brand. Still, Queens fans say that is precisely why they like it. “Queens is Queens,” said Rich Buceta, the president of SingleCut Beersmiths, a new brewery in Astoria. “It basically doesn’t have to live up to any sort of hype or image like, say, Manhattan or Brooklyn. Queens is much more low-key. It’s much more unassuming. We’re not trendy. We’re not trying to appeal to the latest fad.” —NYTimes article, November 2013
One thing that most of us Queens residents also know is that, as one of the most diverse places on the planet, our borough does not look or feel like everywhere else. —Sue Yacka of Tastoriaqueens
So who best to define the diverse borough of Queens, but the very people who live here: natives, locals, and recent transplants.
/ What is QNSMADE? /
The mission of QNSMADE is to give a voice to the people that make up the borough of Queens. A design project dedicated to defining Queens through its people.
/ With your help and participation /
The QNSMADE website will be comprised of three sections:
1. Interviews (funds will be used for 25 interviews) / highlighting individuals of Queens and the interesting stuff they are doing. See an example, with our first interview featuring Winnie Cheung from Forest Hills.
2. Photographs (in all 80 neighborhoods) / inspired by Humans of New York (HONY), photographs of Queens people, in order to see what a particular neighborhood looks like through the lens of real people on the streets of Queens.
3. Directory of local resources (at least 100 businesses) / a list of Queens vendors, manufacturers, and businesses, who are making local goods and who might not have a digital presence.
/ The Rewards /
Preview of REWARD #7 [QNSMADE champ]: Video of my dad training a student. He is also the celebrity guest at the end of my Kickstarter video!
This collection bank of Queens data: interviews, photographs, and directory of resources of people living and working here, consisting of natives, local, and recent transplants will define the borough for ourselves.

LOCAL FLEA MARKET & EVENTS & MEETUPS
I would love for QNSMADE to meet the community at the different fleas that are popping up, such as Queens County Market, Ridgewood Market, LIC Flea, and now Astoria Flea this spring and summer. And so some of the money will be allocated for a booth and rentals.
As for reward #5 [QNSMADE social butterfly], a fun-filled night in Queens—a launch party for all your efforts, so we can all meet face to face, away from the screen. It would be held this summer at the 3rd Space, Queens Council of the Arts! We hope to showcase the works of Queens artists.
Not stopping there: we want to organize regular meetups to brainstorm and continue the conversation with the QNSMADE team. I hope to find a communal space that we can congregate at, such as the Knockdown Center in Maspeth.
/ About the founder /
Hello there! My name is Amy Wu. I am a first-year graduate student at the School of Visual Arts. The idea of QNSMADE came about in my Entrepreneurial Design class.
Background: My parents migrated to New York City in 1984 and came straight to Queens, NY. They were living in Richmond Hill at my aunt's house before moving into their own home in Flushing. My mom had me at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan. So I was born in the city, but raised in Queens. Queens has been my home base for 28 years now. My parents still live in the house I grew up in. Currently, I am residing in Briarwood.
What does it mean to be from here? How has growing up in Queens shaped who I am? In this day and age, does it matter as much where you come from? I had a lot of questions and no answers and so I set on the QNSMADE journey to figure out how Queens defines us and how we redefine it.
By defining Queens through its people via a website, this will create a channel for meeting away from the screen. The ultimate goal being crowdsourcing and curating interviews, photographs, and resource page once the foundation is laid down.
I am very proud to be from Queens. I share this sentiment with the Queens community. Upon starting QNSMADE and talking to people, it definitely sounds like we are all doing amazing things in the many pockets of Queens, and we need a shared space to bring it together. We have a deep love for this borough and have a lot of Queens pride.
Risks and challenges
TIME, PEOPLE POWER, and REWARD PRODUCTION costs:
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.—Helen Keller
I am just one person and I cannot accomplish everything I hope for QNSMADE by myself and I do not wish to continue working alone, therefore the birth of the QNSMADE team. I don't need to know everything about Queens, as long as I can find the people who do and learn and collaborate with these experts.
As for reward production costs, hidden charges that goes into manufacturing any product (faulty machine, bad batches, wrong orders, etc). I hope to curb that as I've already met with Queens vendors in Jamaica, Glendale, and Flushing—visited their shops to see their facilities to begin the conversation.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
