This project aims to bring a little known episode in the history of the Americas into an accessible, addictively readable, and lavishly illustrated new book. I stumbled upon the story of Hippolyte Bouchard on a visit to Monterey, California several years ago. I'd never heard of "pirates" attacking the West Coast before, or of the flag of Argentina being raised in California--neither had, for that matter, my Argentine travel companion! Little did I know how much more the story represents. After a great deal of time researching independently, and lamenting the scarcity of existing books on the topic, I had accumulated enough passion and information that it was time to develop this project, to bring the saga to the public.
It's rare to find a story that overlaps with so many cultural and historical connections all at once; from the lands of the Pacific rim, to the Napoleonic wars, to the histories of the United States, Mexico, Argentina, and Spain. I'm excited to use Kickstarter to help bring this project to an interested audience, and hopefully the book will entertain as well as enlighten.
The funds raised through this campaign will be used to cover research costs, the artistic services of a professional illustrator (contracted via Upwork), and ultimately the publishing of the final work--which will be made available in both English and Spanish language editions.
The goal is a must-have book for all lovers of seafaring adventure and pan-American history to enjoy, at any age.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter campaign, as well as my first (published) book, so some small learning curve is sure to be in order. That said, my freelance media experience and design school background allow me to realize this project with a high degree of self-reliance. I look forward to collaborating with the hired illustrator for the visual additions to the project, as well as providing my own visual additions in the form of maps. Publishing will be accomplished utilizing the services of Blurb, and their timelines are well regarded as being reliable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
