My name is Alexyss and I am a 20 year old criminal justice student who is very interested in unsolved cases. I have a passion for deep research on unsolved and little known cases and theories. I think that everyone deserves justice and to know the truth. As a strong writer I find that the best way to do this through writing and analysis. Therefore, I have been doing this on my own for years without publishing anything. This is one group of cases and a theory that I think needs to be shared and recognized.
The ‘Smiley Face Killers’ name came from two retired NYPD detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. They came up with this name for the simple reason that they found graffiti smiley faces near where, they believed, the bodies of missing men entered various water ways. My take on the idea that smiley face graffiti connects these men’s deaths is simple, it doesn’t! Only 22 of the 45 suspected deaths tied to this theory had this graffiti near the recovery site. A noted criminal profiler, Pat Brown, believes that finding smiley faces is merely a coincidence based on a guess of where the bodies entered the water. Smiley face graffiti contributed nothing valuable to this theory. It was simply a way to give the suspected killers a name.
These deaths are only happening to males in college who are alone after a long night of drinking. These men are generally Caucasian, good looking, popular, and good students. Each one’s night ends up going the same way. They go out with their friends for a fun night of drinking. At some point during this activity their friends lose them and these men are seen stumbling around the area near the bar and simply disappear. The friends always think they ended up back home either by walking or by cab but then the next day no one hears from them. Normally the bodies are not found right away or even during vigorous searches but then end up in plain view in the water way. Once these bodies are found there is an agreement by many well renowned professionals that these men had only been dead for a few days despite being missing for, normally, weeks. Their cell phones are always missing even though they still have on clothing and their wallets. Generally there are drugs found in their system that they were not seen taking and their BAC, blood alcohol concentration, is too low for them to be drunk.
All of these cases started as being classified as an accidental drowning, most often due to drunkenness. With the consistencies within 45 cases I believe it is impossible to say they are simply coincidences. The route along I-94 and I-90 in the north east of the US and within the midwest have some of the highest drowning percentages of anywhere else due to these men's deaths. The families have been asking for answers since the day these men went missing and police refuse to reopen many of these cases. I would like to help shed light on these mysterious deaths and give these men's families a chance to get their names out there. I want to help seek justice for all these deaths and seek an end to the terrible phenomenon that has been happening since 1997.
This book starts with an overview of what the 'Smiley Face Killers' theory is and how it came about. Then we jump right into the first case starting in 1997. I give comprehensive overviews of cases from 1997-2018. Each of these cases has the story of what happened that night and then I jump into the details of what was suspicious, what happened, and why it is believed to be the work of the 'Smiley Face Killers.'
What do I hope to achieve?
By spreading the word about these deaths I hope that more people look into them and also want justice for these men and their families. I am doing this through writing the book but also supplying access to my research materials. The book will give a lot of info and have you thinking but I think that the ultimate way for people to believe things and engulf themselves in them are to research them. Therefore by sending my research resources along with the book people are able to really get into the theory and work to learn on their own.
Risks and challenges
As with any book and any theory there are risks. One major risk is that so many people have written off this theory as crazy because they believe there is no scientific proof or evidence of these deaths. However, I present a lot of evidence from well renowned scientific professionals in this book while also getting rid of misconceptions about these cases.
Another challenge that this book provides is the challenge of finding reliable research. There is always a multitude of fake news and fake reports on death cases. However, I have been researching for years and have adapted to always finding the real, hard facts. With my experience this book will have all of the facts whether they support this theory or not. The key thing is presenting all the evidence and deciding based on that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
