So what's it all about?
The GUVNOR is a card based game for up to eight players. The basic premise of the main game is quite simple - collect and swap cards with others players in order to complete a CRIME set, earn RESPECT from other players and then issue a DECREE that can help or hinder them. The player with the most RESPECT at the end of the game wins.
Aside from taking it in turns to shuffle and deal this is not a turn based game. Once a round starts all players swap cards simultaneously. No more sitting around waiting for Doris to decide what she's going to do (sorry Doris). No more getting frustrated with Malcolm as he spends twenty minutes putting together some strategic masterplan that doesn't actually work (we're not saying sorry to Malcolm because The GUVNOR doesn't like him).
It's FAST... It's FRANTIC... It's FIERCE...
Check out this clip from a random play-test group:
The GUVNOR is quick and easy to learn which makes it a great party game and accessible to a wide variety of players. It's also incredibly adaptable so as you become more familiar with the game you can introduce your own house rules (though to start off with you'd better play as The GUVNOR tells you - he can get awfully funny with people that don't do as they're told.)
More than just a party game...
From very early on we wanted to make The GUVNOR more than just a party game for larger groups. From our own gaming experience it can be quite annoying when suddenly someone pulls out at the last minute (usually when the police catch up with them) and you're left playing some condensed version of the original game. Well not so with The GUVNOR. We decided from the beginning that our 2-3 player game had to be an entirely new experience with a different win goal, a different game mechanic and an entirely different approach to gameplay.
And it is.
In our 2-3 player game you only use the main CRIME cards. The object of the 2-3 player game is to be the first to COMMIT all eight crimes (or five CRIMES if there are three players) with some CRIMES giving you special abilities when you COMMIT them. In contrast to the other version of The GUVNOR this game requires a little more strategy and it's turn based.
Which is the better game?
In play testing our gamers were split - some preferred the 2-3 player version, others the main game. This has resulted in two completely different games in one box - plus a few game variants for the main game.
This means you can play with two or three players for 10 to 15 minutes or with up to eight players for anything up to 90 minutes. We believe that makes The GUVNOR great value and a good one to have in the collection.
The GUVNOR's WORD
The GUVNOR is our first Kickstarter project but we hope it won't be our last. For this reason The GUVNOR made the decision early on that we would bring you the best quality product we could. Therefore our cards will be produced on 310gsm finished card regardless of the funding target.
Similarly, we considered including additional 'wild cards' as stretch goals but again The GUVNOR said "'ave you gone soft? Include 'em anyway."
So we increased our DECREE pile from 18 to 24 cards. Did that increase our design costs? Nope. Quite simply we sent the boys round to the designer's house and they... well, we can't actually tell you what they did, but rest assured he knew what was best for him and as it turns out it was best for you guys too. Ergo sum - six new DECREE cards.
BUT people kept on bending our ear about stretch goals. Now, The GUVNOR don't usually buckle but when BIG Reg explained to him it was a reward for loyalty The GUVNOR started to warm to the idea. Therefore:
All in all, we think The GUVNOR has been quite reasonable, but you know how it is - you don't get nothing for nothing in this world. And so we leave you with this final message from The GUVNOR...
What with The GUVNOR's reputation it's not easy finding people who are willing to give his game a review. But why would you take someone else's word for it anyway when you can TRY The GUVNOR for FREE!
We personally thought The GUVNOR had lost it but then he reminded us that's the way he likes to do business. "Give 'em a taste and they'll come back for more." he said.
So... if you'd like to try a demo version of the party game for yourself head over to The GUVNOR's place to download your free Print and Play demo. Then, if you're up for it, post a review of your own.
No children or animals were harmed during the pre-production phase of The GUVNOR, though one designer now refuses to leave the house and three of our play testers walk with a limp. NOTE: It's never a wise idea to beat The GUVNOR at his own game.
SPELLING: We know that the correct spelling of the word governor is... well, governor, and we also know that the correct abbreviation of the word governor is guv'nor BUT that's not the way The GUVNOR likes it and when The GUVNOR tells us it's spelt GUVNOR then we spell it GUVNOR. Woe betide anyone who disagrees with him.
Risks and challenges
The GUVNOR is our debut game and is the only game we currently have in production - therefore all of our attention and focus is on making this game a success. There are no other distractions.
All of the design process is completed in-house and we are not dependent on any external companies or freelancers for game design, text or art work.
As a launch project it is important to us that we are able to enter the market with a great quality game made with quality components. We are not just launching a game - we're launching our reputation.
We will use contract manufacturers to create The GUVNOR, shipping specialist and fulfilment services in the UK, US and Canada to get our game to your door. With this in mind we have tried to allow ample time for production and logistics however we do not control the production lines, warehouse scheduling or freight services so there exists the possibility of delays which are out of our hands. All we can do is reassure you that if the project is successfully funded we will do everything in our power to get The GUVNOR to you by the estimated date. For a timeline of our production process scroll up and you will find our Project Timeline.
Of course the main risk we face is that we miss our target. We are a small independent start up - hence why we're on Kickstarter - and we REALLY REALLY REALLY can't do this without your help. If you believe in our game as much as we do please help us to get it to the market by sharing this project with friends, family, colleagues... even enemies. Your 'word of mouth', 'Shares' 'Retweets' and 'Likes' will go a long way to ensure we can bring this project to life.
