Relive Your 8-Bit Glory Days!
Don't you miss the good old days? The days of long summers, few responsibilities, and plenty of time to play.
A timeless symbol of our 8-bit glory days, the Question Block Lamp brings back everything we love most about old school gaming.
- Simple mechanics: Tap the bottom to turn on and off. Whether you use your fist, palm, or head is up to you.
- Addictive sound effects: You'll be rewarded with gold coins and the occasional 1-up each time you interact with the lamp.
- Nostalgia-inducing design: Energy efficient LEDs and retro graphics add that warm, familiar glow to your space, day or night.
Perfect for any room
Whether you hang it in your bedroom, boardroom or bathroom, you can’t go wrong. We use the highest quality parts and construction so it’ll look and sound amazing year in and year out.
Ridiculously Simple Setup
Setting up your Question Block Lamp is easier than connecting an RCA jack.
Simply hang with the enclosed mounting kit and plug in the super long 20' power cord.
If you'd prefer to set your Question Block Lamp on your desk, table or night stand, be sure to grab the matching solid aluminum stand (optional). Perfect for offices and cranky landlords!
When makers are around, every open-bar Christmas party is bound to turn into a brainstorm.
We got to talking about ideas, and DaDING! We came up with the concept for a fun, interactive gadget that brought back a time when 8 bits were all you needed.
The next two weeks went by in a blur of superglued fingertips and solder smoke, but at the end with had our first Question Block Lamp!
We eagerly shared our creation with our family, friends, and coworkers, and the response was overwhelming! Everyone loved the lamp and wanted one for themselves.
A few days later, we listed our first lamp on Etsy. To our surprise and delight, Drew Olanoff (formerly of The Next Web) found our listing and wrote an amazing review! In the months that followed, we received great press in publications like G4TV, Gizmodo, Joystiq, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and more.
All the attention led to a lot of sales - over 1,000! We recruited a team of skilled makers to help us fulfill all the orders.
Why Kickstarter? (Question Block Lamp 2.0)
In July 2012, we stopped production of the Question Block Lamp to design a new version. We wanted it to be more robust, reliable, and manufacturable at scale. Here’s how the next generation lamp will be even better than before:
Electronics Upgrade: (Warning: Geek Speak!) To make the lamp more reliable and sensitive to touch, we've integrated the capacitive touch sensor into the circuit board. Now it's super sensitive, activating instantaneously with a single fingertip.
Stronger construction: We’ve selected tougher materials and production techniques to be even more resilient to wear, tear, and supercharged uppercuts. Originally we used acrylic, which is great for lasercutting, but very brittle, meaning the lamps were somewhat fragile. The new version will be made of polyvynil chloride (PVC) which is more resilient and can be die cut.
Longer power cord: To ensure your lamp can hang in any room, we’ve extended the power cord from 11 feet to 20 feet.
Easy to install mounting kit: Every lamp now includes a mounting kit so you can get set up in no-time. This will ensure the cord hugs your wall and ceiling.
Matching aluminum stand: For the Kickstarter, we've developed a durable aluminum stand that complements the lamp, and lets you place it on any flat surface. (Surface finish will be powder-coated or annodized - TBD)
In order to deliver this new version of the lamp, we need your support to make a minimum order to the factory.
Light up your life at a Special Kickstarter Price
If the Kickstarter is successful, we'll have enough funds to scale up production and lower the price to $49 (originally $75 plus shipping).
Today we have everything lined up to begin production in a modern, safe and clean facility overseas -- all we need is your support. With your pledge, we'll start production and deliver high-quality lamps at a great price.
At the $125 pledge level we’re offering a small run of Limited Edition lamps, handcrafted in San Francisco. These lamps will be Version 2.0 and include all the new upgrades. Each lamp will include a unique laser etched identification number and ship shortly after the Kickstarter closes.

Risks and challenges
In addition to building and shipping over 1,000 lamps over the past year, we've also been establishing relationships with experienced manufacturers and sourcing experts to help mitigate as many risks as possible. We will always be in communication about any challenges along the way, including:
Ship date: We have built extra time into the project plan and are confident in our ability to ship on time, but it's possible things take longer than planned.
Manufacturing: We have an established relationship with an experienced and highly reputed manufacturer. In addition, we will be on-site at the facility to oversee production and ensure quality control.
Special Edition Lamps: We're bringing back the same team that created the first 1,000 lamps. Each of them has gone on to do awesome things, but they're coming back to produce this run, just for you!
At 8-Bit Lit, we're committed to delivering a great experience. Thanks so much for your support!
Adam and BryanLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes! The lamp is designed to work in any and all countries (110-240v). Lamps ship with standard two-prong North American plugs, so you might need an (inexpensive) plug adaptor for your specific location.
The four LEDs inside the lamp draw a total of 2.5 watts. For reference, most nightlights draw between 4 and 7 watts.
You don't have to! The lamp features long-lasting, energy effieicent LEDs which do not require changing. Ever.
You can either hang the lamp from an existing location in your room (hook, nail, ledge, etc) or use the included hanging hooks which will be provided with all lamps. If you would like to display the lamp on a table, desk or other surface, check out our matching stand.
