I think we can change things for the better with art. With people laughing and realizing everyone gets in unfortunate situations. Coloring may even help you work out problems. I know it helps me.
The original goal was set low to make sure we got the book in people's hands, but there are lots of exciting stretch goals! The more money the more everyone gets. Pretty soon everyone will get stickers! If you scroll down you can see the possibilities for so much more! At Level 6, you could even have a Coloring Book of Terrible Decisions! Let's get there.
So, I came up with the idea for the Coloring Book of Unfortunate Situations several years ago after experiencing a few very unfortunate situations myself. I then created an anonymous questionnaire and collected unfortunate situations from the public. I picked out 19 of the most unfortunate or common situations and drew them with animals. I also left a page for you to draw your own! I printed every situation that was contributed in the questionnaire on the cover of the final book.
I had a great time drawing this coloring book and had many fun and amusing conversations about which animal best fit in each situation. After letterpress printing it for my MFA I found many of my friends and acquaintances wanted copies but couldn't afford the letterpress printed versions. So, this campaign is to raise funds so there is an affordable copy available! (The letterpress printed version has already been purchased by numerous special collections such as UCLA art library and the University of Utah special collections).
OBTAINED!!!!! Level 0: $1274. Printing Level! If we make it to $1274 we will have won! The book will be printed! You will get a copy if you contribute more than $14!
WE DID IT! We got to Level 0! We all get coloring books! I can't wait to get started? LET'S DO MORE THINGS!
Level 1: $2000. But Wait, There's More Level! If we exceed the basic funding I will print a sticker for everyone (of that peacock drawing and maybe another if we get further) who contributed $5 and over! I will also be able to pay Greg Randall and Ellen Spector who helped me video and with hand lettering for this project (they have been compensated with art, but I would love to give them unexpected money that they deserve).
Level 2: $3000. Double Dog Dare Level: I will make cozies and buttons and everyone over $14 will get their choice of cozy or button. More money for Greg and Ellen!
Level 3: $4000. Fantastic Four: I will add two pages to the Coloring Book! And they will be from my choice of one of the ones you wonderful contributors share with me. This will make the book a SPECIAL EDITION ONLY YOU BACKERS WILL HAVE!
Level 4: $5000. Tier of Awesome: Two more pages!
Level 5: $6000. Shirts for the masses! I will make custom screenprinted t-shirts and everyone who contributed over $28 will get one!
Level 6: $7000. More Coloring for All! At this level I will do another coloring book!!! It will be the Coloring Book of Terrible Decisions.
Level 7: $8000. More more more level. Both Coloring Books will now be 30 pages! That's 10 more pages of art! What?!
Let's just get down to it. We got the cheat codes. SO we're jumping right to LEVEL 10!
Level 10: Infinity Level! $10,000. I will throw you all a party! I will throw the greatest party ever and every single person who contributed will be invited (and let me tell you, those of you who have been lucky enough to come to my parties know how epic they are). I will not be able to cover your transportation costs to get there but it will be worth every penny.
Level 20: Mission Impossible. $20,000. Not only will I do all of the other things but I will drive around the country videoing people about unfortunate situations and make a movie. If anything unfortunate happens to me along the way that will for sure be included (PENIS!). Also, I will love you all so much forever. Unicorns and dinosaurs and puppies and cupcakes will not properly express my love for all of you.
So if you made it this far, I'm going to let you in on some things about why I did this project at all. Why make a coloring book for adults? I tend to get a little silly and goofy but I'm going to let you in on a little secret. I make these things because I believe art can change the world. Years ago, I thought about all the social injustices and all the wrongdoing in the world and didn't know where to start. I was pretty young, so decided that trying to help the environment would be my first goal because, my logic said at the time, without the world, clear air, water etc the other causes didn't matter. However, I've realized two things. 1) The best way to make change is on an individual level with overall mindset. 2) I really am not as effective doing anything as I am when I am making. So, even if it is couched in goofiness and silliness, the goal is to help people be better. To find themselves, things in common with others, and heal on a basic level so they can go out and do better. It may seem like a pretty lofty and unreasonable goal, but a gal's gotta start somewhere.
So, I really am deeply grateful for any and all support. I spent many years in denial about being an artist and how important bringing beauty and thoughtfulness into the world is to me. Now that I know, I don't want to stop and the more support I get the more I can continue. I have was so fortunate to be able to take the time to create this book. I am a very lucky lady with a wonderfully supportive community and circle of friends. I hope you like my work and I get to share it with you. Have a lovely day.
Risks and challenges
Since I have done the drawings and content for this book the risks for making it are very few. I already did the hard work of coming up with ideas, drawing, and producing, I just need your help to get it printed (and maybe do many more awesome things if we make the stretch goals).
If there is a massive amount of funding I may have to deliver the items later than listed, due to all the extra work. However, this would be great news for you since it would mean everyone would get more things!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
