Explore the most exciting 28mm tabletop gaming with The 5th Terrain.
THE 5th TERRAIN brings a new dimension of enjoyment to tabletop gaming like you’ve never experienced before. Don’t just play outside your terrain -- go INSIDE and explore rooms and habitats all while maintaining the mystery by revealing only what the characters currently see.
The purpose of The 5th Terrain’s Beacon Hill Project is to introduce to you a new direction in tabletop gaming. The direction is vertical. This new system is truly modular by design. This 3-D, tabletop terrain, gaming aid system, is scaled for use with 28mm figures. The models are all PDF downloads that are reproducible on your own printer. This system is also designed to be highly customizable with just about every piece created to fold flat. When you are done playing, storage is a breeze. Just FOLD IT FLAT and store it away in a box.
Your imagination is boundless. Why should the terrain features you place on the tabletop be constrained to the same few single level buildings you have, again and again? The 5th Terrain is modular and stackable; build it as high and wide as you wish and you can still rearrange the pieces into a different configuration for the next game. You can follow the floor plans we supply or… YOU decide how many pieces to print and assemble in order to build what you envision; you now have the advantage of reconfiguring the interior of any building. This is the NEW way to go vertical with your tabletop gaming.
THE BEACON HILL PROJECT is our first publication for the tabletop role playing game enthusiasts looking for something new and exciting. This project is offered as a PDF download, you print on cardstock, score, cut, fold and glue to create structures for your tabletop RPG
. We have always been passionate about gaming and are now excited to have the chance to share this experience with all of you. This highly customizable system will help you and your friends create your own layout for structures and underground installations with just a few common hand tools, our simple instructions and a little time.
We are looking forward to developing period structures for Fantasy, Sci-Fi spaceships, space stations, as well as old, modern, and future looking habitats. We are also thinking of a skyscraper up to five feet tall, scaled to play with 15mm miniatures for a total urban warfare scenario. Anyone up for clearing out a bunch of bio-monsters created in a secret lab somewhere in the building? With your help we can all get there together. But first; let’s see what we can do for our fantasy fans, starting with this project. We look forward to your feedback, and how it will help guide us toward creating some outrageous “over the top” structures for tabletop role playing games.
Are you ready for the next level in tabletop terrain?
This is the most innovative and exciting habitat for 28 mm miniatures you've ever seen! Whatever RPG you're playing, now, the game becomes even more fascinating with this new system. Not only are the exteriors works of art, but your character is now invited to explore each structure on the inside as well.
Walk down the hall, climb the stairs, jump out of a window ten stories tall or move through each room with your miniature as if your character was actually there.
The fog of war looms large in the habitats. With its groundbreaking design, progressive steps are covered so that the player only sees what the character can see. The next rooms are revealed as the character proceeds.
The 5th Terrain construction requires minimal effort while at the same time allows you to make what you envision; cubicles are designed to create individual rooms and halls, but you get to choose between solid wall, archway, doorway, or window for each face. Simply print out the patterns and assemble, making as many as you like. Our system is as endless as your imagination. Need a quick room? Use just a few cubicles for that single room. Want to build a gigantic, multilevel castle the size of your table? Print and use as many as you want, creating as large of a habitat for use with your miniatures as you desire. No need to follow the layout we supply because each room is modular, giving you, the builder, unlimited ways to design your own habitat.
The best part about The 5th Terrain's system is that it is completely portable and easy to store. When you're done, take it apart, FOLD IT FLAT and put it all in a box to safely store away for later games.
As this Kick Starter proceeds we will be posting what tools to use and "how to" videos and PDFs on our website, 5thterrain.com .
We hope to help first time paper crafters get up to speed in no time at all and also; share a few tips on paper cutting with the pros as well.
Helping us to finance this project means we will be able purchase faster computers, upgrade programs… and ink…yeah, more ink.
This next video shows the basic pattern for a hallway cubicle and how it's constructed.
As a TRAVELER, for a single dollar we will be most grateful for your support and see you among the most generous of all our Patrons. You are the ones who are willing to give us money and in return ask for nothing more than a simple thank you... Thank you for your support. We offer you in return; Character Slings to keep the grubby little fingers off of your beautifully painted miniature. It will hold any miniature with a base that is one square inch or less.
As an EXPLORER; you have found The Beacon Hill Crypt that has been hidden for days. Everyone knows it conceals an entrance to the labyrinth that extends below the Great Hall. It will take a Fortune Hunter to find it. The Crypt has a 6"X 6" X-base with a 5" tall structure in the center. The center structure is designed using 2 cubicles that are stacked. The lower cubicle has a 2"X2" base and 4 walls, 3" tall, that you have a choice to print a door on each wall or no doors at all, which might be a challenge to your player’s decision making skills. We'll be sure to include the optional trap door on the ceiling as the 5th choice into the crypt.
As CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD; you will get a 3 story lookout tower with parapets, called The Beacon Hill Point Post. The 1st floor is for storage and prisoners. The 2nd floor is for general quarters and the 3rd floor is for the Captain. There are winding stairs in the corner of the tower as the only way up and down from top to bottom... on foot. The Post has a 6”X 6” square base and is over 11” tall. You will also get the crypt to keep an eye on from your small tower
As COMMANDER; you will get The Beacon Hill Tower, which is a large 4 story tower built to house a small platoon (very small). It has stables and storage on the 1st floor. There is a planning room on the 2nd floor. General quarters are on the 3rd floor and 2 rooms for the Commander are on the 4th floor. From this higher perch you can view the smaller tower and the crypt, which is yours to protect. You imagine the possibilities of having a wall and gate to attach to the small tower to protect the crypt that still hides the doorway into the labyrinth below. The large tower has a base that is 8”X8” and is just over 14” tall.
As a MERCHANT; owner operator of the The Beacon Hill Inn & Tavern is what you want. It is a 3 story structure with a gable roof that houses several travelers. The first floor has the Merchant’s quarters and the tavern. The 2nd floor is where all the paying customers hang their hats and armor. The 3rd floor is the attic, where the Merchant keeps …things. On occasion, he’s been known to help a few adventurers out by letting them stay in the attic, when rooms are scarce. Because the Merchant financed the large and small towers along with the discovery of the crypt, he or she owns it all.(At least, that’s what it says on the secret documents.)The Inn & Tavern has a 6”X 15” rectangular base, a gable roof, and stands over 12” tall.
As a REGENT; you expect to get the biggest, baddest place to rule from and that will be; The Beacon Hill Keep. This is a 9 story Keep to house a Governing Regent, their staff, and a small platoon of servants. The first floor houses those real expensive horses the Regent owns. There are so many rooms of various sizes; a half a dozen cleaning servants could easily get lost. It’s a large Keep at 22,600 square feet, if it were real. That would be over 900 square inches of playable surface in this Keep. The structure has a square base 14”X14” and stands over 30” tall.It has winding stairwells throughout the building. A magical fire burns bright below the top deck. The Regent rules over every bit of land and its inhabitants this light touches. The Regent may take possession of The Beacon Hill Inn & Tavern, The Beacon Hill Tower, The Beacon Hill Point Post, and of course... that little Crypt that still hides the Labyrinth below.
To the Regent level; we add an Assortment of Beacon Hill Keep furnishings.
As MEN OF GODS; you have your God on your side, where gold flows like holy water. Good, bad, or indifferent your God is giving you a place to worship him, her or it. This House of Worship is a single story structure with a gable roof and an attached tower with a crows nest toped with parapets. It has a 14"X 6" rectangle base and is over 13” tall. The crow’s nest is the best place to view all of which your God has given you by the powers vested in him, it or her, by you. By your God given right; you will own The Beacon Hill Keep, The Beacon Hill Inn & Tavern, The Beacon Hill Tower, The Beacon Hill Point Post (you're thinking a wall, attached to that tower would be really nice to help keep it all together), and that beautiful little Crypt, which is your gateway to a ton of riches... if only you could find the way down to the Labyrinth below.
To the Men of God level; we add The One Story Building.
As the LORD or LADY of this small world; when you come to visit you have things to say, important things. And now you have a place to say them to all the important people privileged to hear you speak. You now have The Great Hall to speak your mind. Why will they listen? Because you own practically everything, The Great Hall is a single story structure with an 8"X 16" base and over 8" tall with open rafters beneath a hip roof with parapets. They all think they own what they have but you know better. The House of Worship, it's yours. The Beacon Hill Keep, you paid for it, it's yours. The Beacon Hill Inn & Tavern is yours as well, as are the big and small towers, which would do well to have some walls attached to them. And the strange little Crypt that smells of a Labyrinth below. If only you had raised the taxes a little more on all your subjects, you might have been able to fund an expedition to find the way down into the labyrinth and secure the untold riches that everyone keeps talking about.
To the Lord and Lady level; we add The Village Buildings (6 models) with thatch roofs.
As THE FORTUNE HUNTER; you are not about talking, you are about doing. You found the way into The Labyrinth way below the Crypt. With all the gold it took to get you down here this town is yours baby, ALL YOURS! Best of all, the more people this town attracts, the more you will own. In this town; gold is king. Wear your crown proudly for all to see… “My wise Fortune Hunter.” The Labyrinth and all above it is yours, including a Bath House you are dearly in need of after being in the Labyrinth.
To the Fortune hunter; we add The MAGIC SHOP and the POTION SHOP
The FOUNDER’S level has been created for 5 lucky people who will receive a box with The Beacon Hill Tower all neatly folded flat inside and ready to be assembled. They will also receive all the previous rewards listed above and be listed as a PATRON OF THE ARTS for the Beacon Hill Project
Here is where it gets exciting. Our stretch goals will make the true hobbyist giggle with anticipation and the spectators salivate. But the one thing you all have in common is; when the modeling is done, it will be play time for everyone for years to come.
Oh yeah! Time to celebrate a little at this point and we are feeling good about how much you all have supported us to get here. Sooooo... SLINGS FOR EVERYONE!!
This video shows how to make a sling and how the new super sling works. Thanks for putting us over the $1800 goal.
The SUPER SLING is awarded to everyone at this level and above, in appreciation for having reached the goal. Thank you very much.
From here we separate the part time hobbyist from the weekend paper cutting warlords who want it all. The rest of these rewards are for those who pledged at the Commander level and higher.
When we reach this level it's time to offer a little relief for your character miniatures. That's right, we're talking about a privy. Now your characters will have a place to sit and read, for a little catching up on all the monster sightings throughout the realm. Who knows, maybe there's a slayer wanted ad in there some place.
You say you want a little incentive to get here? How about a BLACKSMITH SHOP for the Commander level and higher?
Where there are TREES, (time for an incentive) there must be a SMALL HOME to be made from those trees. We are adding the SMALL HOME to this reward level.
The TREES are for the EXPLORER level and higher (because I feel a CRYPT needs a few trees around it) and the Small Home is for the COMMANDER level and higher as a bonus, as well as the trees.
An assortment of KNIGHTS TENTS used for the games will be awarded to everyone from the EXPLORER backers and up.
+THE PALATIAL TENTS will be added to the assortment of Knights Tents for MERCHANT level backers and higher for this reward. They are a series of connected tents used as temporary shelter for the royals. I’m drawing my inspiration for design from the Tudor period (16th century), which seems to be the high point for royal tents at the time... and they fit this fantasy setting.
+HUTS and FIRE PITS & THE DETACHED KITCHEN

The house can have rooms that move randomly throughout the whole building or just spin in place without the room’s occupants noticing (lift them out by hand and place them back in technology). It will also have walls that come and go and gates that come and go as well.
Risks and challenges
The risks are typical for a project like this when you consider the worst that can happen. A natural catastrophic event, illness, injury or even death may postpone the deadlines but not stop us from finding a way to deliver. Currently, this is the only project we are working on and it means more to us than any project yet to follow, only because it’s our first. We have almost all of the patterns finished and are now working on the surface design. What you see in the photos are the practical models we put together, testing different surfaces for their overall appearance. The cubicles are designed to act like building blocks to create these mini-habitats. The big challenge is to give these cubicles a surface that blends but doesn’t become repetitive in design. To help give you more choices with the look of your project, we are using the Adobe's PDF layer system witch will allow a greater range of surfaces to be use on each cubicle.
We will keep you informed of our progress every step of the way and should we experience a set back, you will know right away. We will also make sure to keep you informed of our resolutions for any set back we may experience
With a little luck and lots of hard work; we will do well.
