We're Christian and Kristen, the creators of Vaginas and Periods 101: A Pop-Up Book! Vaginas and Periods 101: A Pop-Up Book is a fun and creative way to learn more about…vaginas and periods! The book uses pop-ups to explain how the female reproductive system works, colorful graphics to normalize anatomy aesthetics and discharge, and describes various menstrual product options. As licensed mental health therapists and sex educators, we teach a lot of young people and we saw a need to normalize menstruation and could't believe this book didn't already exist!
We pitched our idea at the National Sex Education Conference in 2016 and won a grant to start our pop-up book.
Here are the core book characters, created by Sara M. Lyons, an artist based out of California. The pop-up was created by Papersmyths in the UK who have been alongside us from the start to help us materialize the book. Once we fulfill the Kickstarter, they'll be helping with production as the books will be assembled in China. This process takes 16 weeks and then we can begin Kickstarter fulfillment.
The book itself is a nine page spread concertina fold pop-up, including two pop-up spreads which will be 8"x8" case bound filled with characters to help the reader learn. The first pop-up is a 3-D vulva spread to explain basic external anatomy. Next is an interactive wheel used to illustrate the menstrual cycle complete with a lift-the-flap mini book. The following pages are dedicated to introducing various menstrual products and how to use them. The book ends with normalizing discharge and the appearance of vulvas. Bonus page includes sex ed resources for both adults and youth! On top of production and assembly, we are required by the printing company to do a minimum run of 5,000 books. Help us bring this book to life with our goal of $30,000 (sexedtalk.com)!
Sara M. Lyons is an artist, product designer, and illustrator based out of Anaheim, CA. She's done murals and projects for companies such as Urban Decay and Ebay and has over 70,000 followers on Instagram. We discovered her work through local Omaha boutique Hello Holiday and we knew her style was perfect for the book. We are beyond excited she agreed to collaborate with us (saramlyons.com).
We are so grateful our partners also love this idea! Our partners include Lunapads, Maxim Hygiene, and Jade and Pearl.
Lunapads is a women-owned social mission based out of Canada. With a goal to help people be more positive and have informed experiences about their menstrual cycles, they offer various reusable menstrual products for all bodies (www.lunapads.com).

Why us? Well...Kristen Lilla is not only a licensed clinical social worker, but is Nebraska's only AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator. In addition to numerous leadership roles, Kristen is an international speaker, has been published, and co-chaired the 2017 National Sex Education Conference (kristenlilla.com). Christian Hoeger is a licensed mental health practitioner in private practice. Christian has spoken at conferences nationwide and has also been published (voiceofhopecounseling.com). The two of us met at Girls Inc. of Omaha in 2013 where we counsel girls ages 5-18 and teach sex education. Years ago, we joked that having a pop-up book would make teaching more fun and accessible, and when we realized this book didn't already exist, we created a partnership, Sex Ed Talk LLC, and the Vagina Pop-Up book was born! We love teaching sex ed at Girls Inc. in Omaha and would be thrilled if you inspired girls at other Girls Inc. affiliates to be strong, smart, and bold through the buy a book + give a book.
Risks and challenges
We have been working over the last year with our partners: Papersmyths, Sara M. Lyons, Lunapads, Maxim Hygiene, Jade and Pearl, and the National Sex Education Conference. We have all the support we need, we just need the financial backing to bring this project to life. Foreseeable risks and challenges include not raising the funds needed, and potential delays in printing and distribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
