After years of working on other various properties and projects, from "Star Wars" to "The Simpsons" to a graphic novel for the band RUSH, Artist Tom Hodges, along with his wife, Terri Hodges, are now bringing their own Comic Universe to the table.
Antiis Comics will allow the reader to follow the entire Universe with just ONE published title and an online comic.
The idea is to build a Comic Universe slowly. Three Issue story arcs, "One Shots" and a All Access Web Comic. Through the title "Antiis Comics Presents", we will focus on larger stories and introduce key players in the Antiis Universe while the online web comic, "A.E.G.I.S.", will tell smaller stories and focus on what's happening around the published comics.
"Antiis Comics Presents #1: Midknight"
That brings us to our Kickstarter campaign, "Antiis Comics Presents #1: MIDKNIGHT". "MIDKNIGHT" will be the first three issue story arc of "PHASE ONE" and the first issue is the main focus of this Kickstarter with stretch goals for additional books added on. Introduced in 2007 through Red 5 Comics, the title was previously published gearing more towards a "kid friendly" crowd...
A fun book, but we'll be taking the story in a different direction...
We won't be dismissing the events in the previous story, but what we will be doing is taking it 10 years forward.
The world is becoming a different place and the life of Dr. David D'Ville (aka Midknight) is a lot harder then it was the last time we saw him. His wife, Assistant D.A Tarliyn D'Ville, is currently out of action as Midknight's partner in crime-fighting, Knightingale (Why? We'll save that for the book.). Their 15 year old daughter, Rowan, who does not know his secret, is on her way home from private school on Summer Break. And she will need to adjust to the new Nanny, Miss Carla. To top it off, Gordo the Clown, Children's TV show Host turned violent criminal, has escaped and is plotting revenge against the man who put him away and the city he protects.
Antiis Comics Presents #1: Midknight, 32 pages (26 page main story, 4 page Back Up story, 2 page Various)
Meet Gordo, Oujoux and TRAIN... the villains in Antiis Comics Presents #1-3
Austen Gordon aka "Gordo the Clown", was the toast of the town. He was the number one rated children's show host in the country. He had fame... he had money... and then it all fell apart.
A Japanese import, "Battlecubes" hit the US and dominated the airwaves. It had one series, then a spin-off and then another spin-off. RPG and Video Games. It was a Phenomenon and it took "Gordo the Clown" from a prime after school 4pm time slot Monday through Friday to a 4am spot before the Televised Sunday Morning Mass. Gordo started down a dark path which led him to almost taking his own life. It was at his darkest moment that he decided to take revenge on the world for taking everything he had away.
Gordo traveled to Japan, where he was looking to hire someone to murder the head of the company that created "Battlecubes". In the process, he met Oujoux, a deadly assassin who quickly went from partner in crime to partner in life. Together, they not only murdered the Akira Higashi, the head of Digisom International, the creators/owners of "Battlecubes" but the entire Board of Directors, their families and leveled the Digisom tower to the ground. Gordo took his TV persona and bastardized it to fit his twisted mindset, hence his continuing to wear Clown Make Up.
The couple then spent the better portion of five years on the run from Interpol and when Gordo and Oujoux attempted to take out Digisom's US Headquarters, located in Philadelphia, Gordo and most of the gang he accumulated were busted by Midknight and Knightingale, but not before killing 20, 10 of which were Philadelphia Police. Oujoux escaped and reached out to Gordo's old Friend and Bodyguard, Stan Hoveke. Hoveke was working in New York City for an unknown employer, pulling random bank jobs in a high tech armored suit, allowing him to plow through anything and protected head to toe, Hoveke became "TRAIN" and a valuable asset to Gordo and Oujoux...
... and they're set on setting the score on Midknight, Knightingale and the City.
As you can see, we're already hard at work on the artwork and the lettering will be underway soon. "Antiis Comics Presents #1-3: Midknight" is just the start of Antiis Comics: Phase One.
Antiis Comics Presents #1-3: Midknight is just the beginning of what Antiis Comics is trying to accomplish. The concept is not unlike another companies Movie Formula, which inspired us to go in this direction. After ACP #3, we switch gears and introduce the next Hero in the Antiis Universe, "m". Here is a graphic to illustrate what we're working towards:
Q: Can my kids read these comics?
A: The comics will be rated "PG-13", but if you allow them to watch Super Hero movies and TV shows, they'll be ok.
Q: Will I be charged when I pledge?
A: No. You won't be charged until the end of the campaign, so pledge early, especially on the limited rewards!
Q: Will you ship Internationally?
A: Yes. All rewards that will are shipped have International Shipping added to them.
Q: I pledged/was going to pledge to the previous Kickstarter, why the restructure?
A: After evaluating what we were doing, we decided to to scrap the previous campaign and focus on the first issue and gear it more towards a "Grass Roots" approach. Our new goal is to get a few issues under our belt before launching into wide distribution through Diamond and the all access web comic will launch after issue 3, instead of before issue 1. By doing this, we were able to cut some of the costs out of the Kickstarter campaign. The quality will still be there, but we'll be getting the word out via social media and con appearances.
"ACP #1: MIDKNIGHT Sketch Cover Variant" Shown below "Blank" (in the $10, $13 and $16 Rewards) and a Sketch Cover Variant with a Midknight head sketch ($40 Reward).
The $250 reward tier is VERY limited, but offers original pages from issue one!
More Reward examples on the way!
Risks and challenges
In a previous Kickstarter, Tom offered a lot of original commissions. It took far too long to complete those pieces. To eliminate that problem, for the exception of a limited amount of sketches, the original art will be pages from the comics.
NOTE: Kickstarter's launched by other people, with Tom as the artist may or may not still owe rewards. Tom was work for hire on those projects and has no control or involvement beyond his artwork. Please contact those projects directly for any further information.
We have also put details in the rewards explaining how they will be dispersed.
