ENTASIS DANCE is an outdoor sculpture-dance project overlooking the Manhattan skyline for the Dumbo Arts Festival coming up this Fall.
Who am I?
Eve Bailey, sculptor and performance artist based in Brooklyn, NY. I am a former metal worker and builder also trained in classical ballet and capoeira. For the past ten years, I have been combining my love for dance, martial arts and architecture into a single body of work. I have been invited by the Dumbo Arts Festival to create a piece for this year's event taking place in Dumbo, Brooklyn, on September 27/28/29 2012.
What is Entasis Dance?
Entasis Dance is an outdoor Art installation combining sculpture and dance. It will be installed on the water front in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The sculptures will be up from Friday 9/27 afternoon until Sunday 9/29 evening. I am scheduling fifteen-minute dance performances that will start every hour on the clock from 12 pm to 8 pm on Saturday and from 12 pm to 6 pm on Sunday.
“I feel all life is an improvisation. And to be able to express it through movement is the most natural, health full and happiness producing way to be.” Frances Wessells
My work is based on the concepts of balance and coordination. I create ergonomic sculptures that express the elegance of a gesture, a finite moment of equilibrium. The sculptures stand on their own and the performances poetically reveal the process from which the objects are derived.
What does the project involve?
Three nine feet tall totemic sculptures made out of non-toxic water-based resin reinforced with fiber glass (a bit like the hull of a boat to give you an idea) with inner metal structures to anchor them.
An 8x12 feet adjustable platform made out of steel and plywood.
Fifteen dance performances all free and open to the public.
Professional photographs and video documentation of the event.
Where does the money go?
# First thing first: the materials for the sculptures that I am making in my shop in Brooklyn. Aqua resin is costly but has many advantages: it is non toxic, easy to work with and outdoor resistant.
#2 The materials and the labor to build the adjustable platform. I can't possibly do it myself because of the time constraint, and my studio is not big enough to build both the sculptures and the platform at the same time.
#3 Transport to and from the studio and the site, as well as the install and de-install of the sculptures and the platform.
#4 Custom made unitards for the dancers. Anna Finke, the very talented costume supervisor for Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and I collaborated on my previous piece: Shoulder Path. The result was so successful that we decided to work together again for Entasis Dance.
#5 I need to remunerate the performers as well. Coco Karol and Andrea-Jane Dispenziere are gifted dancers. We worked together on my piece Intuit for the Dumbo Arts Festival 2011. Their bodies are very sculptural, their movements graceful and powerful. I can't imagine anybody else on the sculptures!
# Last but not least, a proper documentation of it all! I am hiring a professional photographer and a professional videographer to document the event as well as the making of the piece. The images will be used towards a catalog and a limited edition of prints (see pledge description below). The footage will be edited into a video for my website and a short documentary of the process from A to Z (see pledge description below).
# Oh, and a couple more things of course! A chunk of that money goes towards promotional materials and your rewards: professional prints, copies of the catalog, DVDs; and a percentage goes to the Kickstarter team and Amazon.com for their services.
Why am I asking for your help today?
The Dumbo Arts Festival supports hundred of artists for this event. They can only afford to give every artists a small percentage of their project's overall cost. Now, they are offering me a wonderful location on the East River water front overlooking Downtown Manhattan. I can't possibly pass this rare opportunity! And the totemic sculptures work so well with the skyline in the background!
People ask me why I chose to invest my time and money into my projects. Well, when I rented my first studio, my dream was to get the best gallery representation and take the world by storm. What I learned is that nobody cares about what you want to do until after you prove yourself.
My strength lies in my tenacity and I have been able to convince more and more people by improving the quality of my work with each new project. But what if I do an amazing job and keep it in the studio so no one ever sees it? My growing capability of promoting my work has opened a few doors and I want to take this opportunity with the Dumbo Arts Festival to prove I can make it happen at a larger scale.
What if I exceed my goal?
$10,000 is the minimum I need on top of the Dumbo Arts Festival's and my own investments to complete the project. It would be great if I gathered more. It would allow me to spend more time in my studio to get the sculptures to a higher level of finish. It would also allow me to print the catalog on a higher quality paper.
Whatever you can contribute will be really appreciated. What matters is the number of people who pledge! If you can't give at all (trust me I totally understand), please share the link! Thank you all so much for your time and support. I am forever grateful. And I really hope to see everyone there in September. Bring your friends and family, it's free!
All my best,

All the sculptures are approximately 18 inches heigh and 4 inches in diameter.
