About this project
What is the Black Torch?
As you have already guessed, the Black Torch is a comic anthology. This is actually our 4th anthology as the group, "LAVApunch", but our first full color book. The book will be 8" x 10" magazine format.
We are currently wrapping up production the end of this month, after which we will be going to press.
Why is it called the Black Torch?
This is the theme to the book. Every artist made their own interpretation as to what the Black Torch was. It could be the title of their story, a physical object, or the name of a character. We chose the name because it already got people to imagine something in their head, and having a starting point is usually easier than a completely blank canvas.
Who is in the book?
Currently we have almost 20 contributors with over 15 stories. We aren't completely done with the book at this point, so we don't have a final page count.

Where is the money going?
At current estimates, our book will cost a total of $12,000 USD to print, and ship to us. The cost could vary depending on the number of final pages, but we know it's going to be about 200 pages or more.
10% of the money raised will go to Kickstarter and Amazon Payment fees.
Another 20% of the money will go to shipping just for the books, and we haven't fully calculated other wish fullfillment, but we know it will add at least another $1000 USD.
Even with the 12,000 goal, we know we are going to be a little short, but we can make up that difference, we just wanna get this book printed!!
Current Stretch Goal Plans:
REACHED! @ $13,000 USD, (just found out we can make matchbooks!) SO for every tier above $20 we will ship a special BLACKTORCH matchbook!
*small hiccup for matchbooks, we can't ship them overseas (How does papercraft sound? We will send out surveys so you can pick which you would like.)
REACHED! @ $15,000 USD, we'll cover pretty much our entire costs. As a small reward, we'd like to include a special kick-starter only edition bookmark created by one of our artists, included in every book as a thank you.
REACHED! @ $18,000 USD, we'll make another sticker to ship out with every book order!
REACHED!!!! @ $20,000 USD, we want to create a special slip cover for the book, which will only be available free for people who purchased the book via kick-stater.
When can i get it?
Though we plan to have the printed book in our hands by July in time for SDCC, we may not be able to ship all the books out before hand as we need to prepare for that convention. We can otherwise promise all the books will be mailed out by August.
If you are going to attend SDCC while we have the book, you can pick it up at our booth @ no extra charge, and we'll mark you off the list.
Thank you for supporting The Black Torch Anthology Kickstarter!
We have unveiled a special bonus video for everyone for helping us reach our funding goal; an exclusive interview of Skullgirls' Lab Zero Games!
Join us as we sit down and talk with Skullgirls' Creator and Creative Director Alex Ahad, Lead Animator Mariel Cartwright, Lead Clean-Up Artist Richard Suh and Intern Stephanie Shih, as we pick and prod their creative brains, unravel their humble beginnings and their journey with comics and video games.
right now the cover and t-shirt designs are still not finalized. We will post them as soon as they are done! (along with all the final art for tier rewards!)
What is LAVApunch?
LAVApunch is a collective of artists that have come together through all kinds of means to form and promote their projects. We've made 3 anthologies so far, plus we do a lot of small projects together. We are currently working on our 4th book, this one, the one we need your help to print!
Risks and challenges
Currently we are 80% done with the book, so there is some risk in the remainder of our time to slip on our dates.
We've successfully printed 3 other anthologies, so we've done this before, but not with Kickstarter. I like to equate it to a really expensive hobby.
People are still wrapping up their entries, and we've got to finish both editing and revisions.
We still haven't picked a final cover, and the actual putting together of the actual book is taking place this week.
We are relying on the Kickstarter funding to tell us when we can take our book to press. If we raise a good amount of money up front, we'll feel comfortable forking over a hefty deposit so the printer can start their purchasing orders, and we can begin the final process.
Thanks guys for all of your interest and support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I'm outside the US, but i want to pick up the book at SDCC, do i still need to pay extra charge for international shipping?
Yes, but please ask us if you are outside the US, but want to pick up the book at SDCC. We should be able to reimburse you for the shipping if you pick up at con, and i am sure we'll throw in a few other freebies. Also please note: We can't be 100% sure we will have the book at SDCC, so we may have to ship it to you in August anyway.
We are shipping the book out in August! But if your at SDCC, you may be able to pick up your copy onsite.
