"Hard science fiction - that is, the kind of science fiction that gets into the nuts and bolts of science, discovery, and exploration - is underrepresented in movies and television. Venus Rises is therefore refreshing in its attention to the spacecraft and other technical details." ~ Frontier Channel
UPDATE: We hit our goal! A BIG thank you to all our backers! Here's our first stretch goal...
Earth was quarantined fifty years ago. Since then, long-running political and cultural clashes between Mars and Venus have intensified. Talk of revolution permeates the ether. Humanity is on the threshold of interplanetary war!
The hardworking crew of the salvage ship Cattywompus are relatively low status, yet they find themselves at the epicenter of a rapidly escalating civil war.
Strap on your seat belts! Venus Rises is about to take off! Lets do this together! Join the revolution by making a contribution.
VR was originally a web series, produced back in 2007. Relying heavily on physical sets, rather than green screen, it quickly became too costly to maintain. Production was shut down after just 3 episodes.
I wouldn't give up. I sought out other, more cost effective, avenues to tell my story... eventually deciding with comic books. This new medium allows me to ignore the budgetary restraints I had with the web show... giving me the freedom to finally match my imagination.
In 2014, I adapted my remaining shooting scripts into a 2-parter comic book. This not only gave my web show a proper ending, but also served to set up the next series.
VR's next chapter starts roughly 2 years after the events seen in the web show... midst the civil war between Venus and Mars... with all new characters, new exotic locales (in-depth looks at the Martian and Venusian colonies), and an all new 'hero' spaceship designed from stem to stern.
Issue #1 will be 32 action-packed pages in glorious color.
Venus Rises... the little engine that could... is poised to become 2016's next big sci-fi franchise!
The inspiration for Venus Rises came from a fondness for history combined with speculation of how the world would end. No matter how sophisticated we believe we have become as a people, and no matter how many Golden Ages of discovery we achieve, corruption, decadence, and complacency often cause the seeds of unrest to be sown between the haves and the have-nots. I wanted to create a science factual series containing those historical and speculative elements, leading to a conflict between two factions of people on very different sides of the social hierarchy. ~ J. G. Birdsall
Spaceships in the VR universe (namely the ones traveling long distances) are equipped with some type of rotating section to generate gravity. In this latest WIP pic.. artist Thomas Garbaini works on detailing Cattywompus' rotating ring.
