About this project
"Viviane Moos' photography provides an x-ray of society's soul."
- Peter Mann, international Coordinator, World Hunger Year & Harry Chapin Media Awards
In 1991 and 1992, against all odds, I shot the beginning of a photo book by sharing the survival struggle of child street gangs on the violent streets of Brazil. This work earned me many awards, much international recognition and was published in major publications and exhibited worldwide.
In 1994 I returned to Rio to see what had happened to these children – it was a follow-up chapter and the middle to my story.
But all this was not enough, something important was missing – what had happened to those children who survived the violence and had grown to be adults? This question has haunted me for years.
Now, I’m turning to Kickstarter patrons to help me create the ending to my story. I am going to return to Rio to connect my images from the past with the present. Again, against all odds, I have an opportunity to find some of these children today, 21 years later, due to a Dutch foundation in Rio called REMER house, whose founder Robert Smits has kept in touch with the children who have passed through his shelter.
Please join me as co-producers to help publish and promote this photo book. 10% of the sales from the book will be donated to REMER House.
Pledge awards for your support will include limited edition fine-art prints plus signed copies of the first edition of the book Brazilian Street Diary.
If you believe that shining a light on social injustice can make a difference then join me in completing my book. You will be part of an important project.
Please show your support for the project by sharing it on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and with your family and friends!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND THANK YOU AGAIN !
The funds raised through Kickstarter will be supplemented by personal funds when necessary to complete the creation and self-publication of the photo book. Funds will be applied to costs that include: the shoot, travel, transportation and modest lodgings in Brazil and Holland for 45 days for the photographer, plus costs for security while working on the streets of Rio. Book publishing costs will include high quality scans of film negatives, editing and design fees, e-book, social media, fine-art printing, the actual book printing and the awards costs.

Risks and challenges
My project has been 95% photographed and written. My challenge is to complete the last 5% of the photography, which needs to be shot in Rio in 2013 to see what my ending will bring! This is an unknown until I return with the images. Upon my return, I will order high-res scans of the film-negatives, finish the layout, produce and print the photo book, plus create the limited edition prints for my pledges.
I plan to be back in New York by mid-February 2013, edit the new material and produce the book and the fine-art prints in March and April. This will allow me to complete and deliver my pledges sometime in May.
My main challenge is to reach my goal and even get additional pledges. I have calculated my funding goal very conservatively and more contributions would allow me to create an even more beautiful, first edition photo book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
