About this project
An incredibly useful multi-tool that's where you need it, when you need it.
But will it really fit in my wallet?
Yes. WildCard is the height of one credit card and the thickness of two.
Is the blade actually sharp?
Yes. It's built to tackle life's everyday tasks - both big and small.
No box cutter? No problem.
What if I forget it in my wallet and go through airport security?
Just pop off the blade and discard it, rather than sacrificing the whole tool. You can get a replacement after your trip.
So what else can it do?
WildCard isn't just a one-trick pony. It's a multi-functional wolf.
You can finally get rid of that clunky keychain opener.
And adjust screws whenever you need to.
The Story Behind WildCard
Cellphone, wallet, keys. This is the checklist I run through before leaving the house. With phones getting bigger, space in my pocket is at a premium. Even if I could remember to carry a multi-tool everyday, its pocket bulk would outweigh its convenience. This drove me to create the WildCard; a bladed multi-tool to minimize space and maximize utility. Being prepared shouldn’t be a burden. Place WildCard in your wallet once and always have it handy.
How do you fit a multitool, with a blade, in your wallet?
I wanted something I wouldn't forget, something I wouldn't lose, and something that would take up as little space as possible. I had already successfully kickstarted PocketMonkey, a 1mm-thin, bladeless multitool that fits in your wallet. This inspired me to create a pocket knife in the same form. I constrained myself to keep the design to just two PocketMonkeys thick. Easy, right?
Nope, not that easy.
I decided to re-imagine the pocketknife without pins, rivets, or complex assemblies. All of these add cost and thickness to the tool. I designed (and redesigned, and redesigned) a proprietary new pivot system for the blade that would let it stay under 2mm. In the end, I spent two years designing a rigid pivot with a removable blade that met my thinness goal. But it's finally ready, and we're just a few short steps away from production.
This unique design is patent pending. There is nothing that stands above the 2mm height limit. The proprietary FlyOff pivot also enables you to remove the blade quickly, easily, and without tools. If you forget you have WildCard in your wallet at airport security, you can simply surrender the blade and order a replacement later.
Two things you're never supposed to use your blade for are prying things apart and turning screws, so these features are built into the handle. Of course, it wouldn't be a Zootility Tools design without a bottle opener, which is subtly integrated into the wolf cutout. All of these features are integrated into a fully-hardened stainless steel construction, creating a rigid and safe knife with a solid feel and exceptional durability. WildCard will not break or rust.
You’ve launched some successful Kickstarter projects already, why do you need more funding?
We have committed to producing all of our products in the US. We want to reinvigorate American manufacturing. But we can only do that if our products can actually be made at scale. WildCard is too expensive to produce at scale with our current equipment. We need the funding for a downpayment on new manufacturing tools that will allow us to reduce costs and make WildCard a commercial reality. This is where we still need help.
It is possible to make high-quality, very high-end products in the US by passing on the production costs to the consumer. There will always be a small group of people willing to pay top dollar for American-made quality. But we want to make quality products for everybody. In our experience, producing an affordable product in the U.S. requires doing as much of the work in-house as possible.
This means making big investments in manufacturing equipment and space. And this is where crowdfunders, like you, come in. You can reverse the current trends and make a difference.
There shouldn’t be high barriers to support American manufacturing. Help us pave a new path: ingenuity in design + hands-on manufacturing + self-distribution = quality products with competitive pricing. We know it’s doable because we are currently doing it with our other products. We need your help to make it happen again with WildCard.
What's the WildCard KS Edition?
The KS Edition is a way for us to thank our backers. It's a limited edition, Kickstarter-only release. The laser engraving for the KS Edition is an extremely complex and time-consuming process. You’ve probably never seen anything like this, because other companies aren't crazy enough to commit the time needed to manufacture such detailed artwork with such a high-quality process. Each KS Edition literally takes 15 minutes to laser engrave with a 50W laser! The marking has an ultra-premium look made from a carbon buildup under the surface of the metal. It is indelible and won't wear off.
But don't just take our work for it. Here are a few sites that have tested and/or reviewed the WildCard prototype:
Risks and challenges
As with all design projects there are risks and challenges. Good news though, you are funding a team that has already produced and successfully delivered a bunch of other Kickstarter projects! We have been working together for over a year now and already work with our vendors and deal with fulfillment on a daily basis.
That said, we know very well what things can go wrong. In setting up a new manufacturing line, there are risks that the first sample doesn't meet the design specifications and requires retooling. Finish on the final parts, once produced in larger batches, can also be an issue that requires additional post-treatment. Finally, vendors - in our experience - are not always able to stick to their time estimates.
We have added buffer into our delivery estimates to deal with unexpected issues that are sure to arise. The manufacturing line is 95% complete, we are most of the way there.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
