12 Tools -- All the size of 1 credit card. Includes bottle opener, screw drivers, wrenches, orange peeler...

Miss out? You can still order from our online store!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A 1mm thin tool

There are many utility tools. They accomplish many functions. But neither you nor I carry them because they are bulky. And bulky pants pockets aren't cool. Plus, for one to actually be useful, you have to remember to carry it with you...daily.

PocketMonkey is a utility tool cut from 1mm thin stainless steel. It only occupies one slot of your wallet. So you can have it with you at all times. You don't have to remember to carry it. And there's definitely no bulk!

10+ functions

PocketMonkey does most of the functions seen in leading utility tools. Then adds some that are truly novel. 12 functions in all. There's no knife, so you don't have to worry about TSA getting frisky.

Enough talk, show me this monkey business!

Final design

After several prototypes (used in product shots on this page), I have refined the design to be production ready. The final design uses 1mm stainless steel that is hardened to four times the normal strength. It is slightly smaller than a credit card, so that it can easily slide into a variety of wallet slots. It also features text reminders for each function that are laser etched as the final production step.

Several edges are smushed or "coined" during the stamping process to improve function by angling the edge. The letter opener, orange peeler, and micro flat-head all benefit from this process. The final edge is "round-bladed" to be acceptable as airplane carry-on.

Ready for production!

I have the final design ready. I have the technical drawings ready. I have the manufacturer ready. They are waiting for me to mail them a check to start production. All that is left is your support!

With successful funding, I am hoping to take delivery of the first production PocketMonkeys the beginning of December. That will ensure delivery to you in time for the holidays!

Also, I am pleased to announce that after a long search, I have found a manufacturer in California who can build this ultra-thin, high-strength device. I really wanted to keep this job in USA and it is going to happen!

In case you don't know how big of a deal that is, consider this: The vast majority of industrial manufacturing is now done in China. I approached many companies who said it was beyond their abilities, before I found one in the US that would accept the job.

Where did this idea come from?

Last year, I locked myself out of my apartment. Stuck there staring at the door, I realized if I had a thin shim, I could slip the latch, since the deadbolt wasn't thrown. I fashioned one, carried it in my wallet, and low and behold, locked myself out the very next week. Yeah, I know... But the wallet tool was awesome! I asked myself, why not add other tools that would be useful to have ready at hand. That simple metal shim evolved into PocketMonkey.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

PocketMonkey has not yet been manufactured. I have successfully prototyped the design, but there is risk that issues will arise in manufacturing the final product. To reduce this risk, I have selected a world-class manufacturer in California that is highly experienced in producing this type of product. They have reviewed my design and approved it for manufacturing.

Of course, there is the possibility that they do not deliver on time or that an unforeseen production issue causes a delay. I am a Mechanical Engineer and have been working as a product designer for many years, so any issues that do arise, I feel confident that I will be able to resolve. I have built a one-week buffer into the schedule, so even if there are delays, I still hope to make the holiday delivery deadline that I have set for the early backers!

FAQ

  • To order more PocketMonkey's, add $12 per PocketMonkey to your pledge. Place your order while supplies last from our first batch and you can still get (US) delivery by Dec 24th! For international, just pay shipping once, for example for 2 pay $27 (12 + 12 + 3).

  • Sorry about that. Total goof. I looked at the wrong rates. I have now lowered them. But Kickstarter - in its infinite wisdom - won't let me change the rate on current rewards. So I have added a new "International Backer" reward level. If you live outside the US, please choose this. If you already selected another reward, please switch. Still want to get in on the pre-production run? Go to http://www.pocketmonkeytool.com instead and place your order by Dec. 4th

  • Yes! The front has English (imperial) units, the back has metric. We are planning to offer a fully metric PocketMonkey in the furutre (including metric wrench sizes), but are keeping it simple to start.

  • Yes! I have been assured, in person, by a TSA official that this device is OK. I went to Boston Logan International Airport with my prototype to go direct to the source of information. He pointed out that it would pose an issue if the edge were serrated, which it is not. He said you may occasionally be asked to inspect such an object, depending on the screener, but assured me it could fly as carry-on.

To clarify, the letter opener will be coined to an angled edge with a rounded point, but not ground to a sharp blade. Here is the relevant page for anyone who is curious: http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items
