"Simon, your music is very melodic and very beautiful." [Chucho Valdes, July 2015]
The world needs new original music. Perhaps now more than ever. I have been composing music all my life - professionally for half of my life - but two years ago I made a bold switch from classical composition and, in a frenzied but happy burst of creativity, composed an albums worth of jazz music!
I was very fortunate to receive a fantastic response to this music (including Chucho Valdes' encouraging words - above - when I played my jazz compositions for him in London last year): I put a 6-piece band together, was signed to a record label and recorded my debut jazz album 'Story Inside' by The Simon Lasky Group, released on '33Jazz' Records. The album received high profile 3 and 4 star reviews and substantial radio airplay on JazzFM in the U.K and National Public Radio in The States. 'About The Moment' by The Simon Lasky Group:
Encouraged - still happy and still frenzied! - I have spent this year composing material for a 2nd album. While these new compositions are a natural development onwards from my debut album, it represents a BIG step up for us; my writing is much more ambitious and has developed into, what I hope is, something exciting and individual which fuses a classical approach to structure with the wonderful immediacy and spontaneity of jazz improvisation.
We are calling the new album 'About The Moment'; one of the things classical music does so well are those big moments of climax and resolution, tension and release. I have literally 'written in' those climactic moments into each of the 9 new compositions, hopefully giving the listener a powerful and uplifting musical experience. Check out the rehearsal videos below and see what you think.
The new compositions:
I am very lucky to have some of London's most skilled and talented jazz musicians in my band. Here are the full length clips of us rehearsing extracts of the new music. I hope you enjoy the direction we are going in with this next album and that you can feel the...'moments':
In addition to what you hear in the clips above, I am going to add a percussionist/tabla player, a harmonica player and, in addition to the piano, I am going to play some Fender Rhodes electric piano and synthesisers in order to develop the more 'symphonic' aspects of our sound.
To make this happen, we need your help:
I truly think this could be a beautiful album. I am desperate (in a good way!) to record it (I really am. You can ask my friends - it's all I talk about!). But we need you - the listener, the new music fan, the supporter - to help make this happen. The money we are hoping to raise will be used as follows:
£200 - rehearsal room hire
£1000 - recording studio hire
£2250 - musicians fees; guitar player, bass player, drummer for 3 full days rehearsal + 3 full days recording; harmonica player & percussionist for 1.5 days rehearsal + 1.5 days recording.
£1750 - producer + engineer fees; 4 days recording + 5 days editing & mixing.
£500 - audio mastering
£500 - album design & artwork
£600 - CD duplication
approx. £700 - Kickstarter's fees
I could not have asked for a better response to last years debut album, 'Story Inside', out now on '33Jazz' Records: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3EtT94BXcyW0VXt45NykHX. If this 2nd album is even half as good as I believe it can be, I think we will be developing a really individual sound and creating something very special which people all over the world can enjoy.
Everyone has busy lives these days so thank you, sincerely, for taking the time to look at this crowdfunding campaign. Anything you can do to bring some new music into the world will be hugely appreciated and, crucially, IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. If you are unable to pledge to the campaign, but like the music, perhaps you can share this project on social media and with like-minded new music fans. If you have any queries do write me a message and PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD.
I hope you enjoy my music.

Risks and challenges
The music for this project has already been composed. We are developing this new music in rehearsals and I am arranging and orchestrating it for my band in the coming weeks. Nothing in life is certain but I don't anticipate any particular risks. If there is anything in terms of a delay, I will be sure to keep you updated and to communicate any issues we are having.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
