The 200th Anniversary of the writing of Francis Scott Key's Star Spangled Banner will be in September of this year. In honor of this occasion, we have all created our own unique take on that hallowed of all American symbols: the American Flag. Our goal is not to tarnish this great symbol in any way, but to create a visual that would represent something more than just another image of the flag.

Admittedly, we are doing this for the fun of collaboration and the love of good design, but we also a hope that this will create discussion of what the American Flag means to all of us both individually and as a whole. You aren't just donating to a cause, you’re also buying a great piece of art.

For more information on this project and future projects, please go to our Citizen Project Facebook page or webpage.

All prints will be screen printed on 100lb cover stock. Shown below are the final available four poster designs. Please Note: Posters do not come with frame.

About Citizen Project: we are a collective of professional artists from a variety of disciplines with the common goal of working on interesting and thought provoking visual ideas. For this, its inaugural project, it is made up of two designers, a typographer and an illustrator. Plans are to launch a design project each year with more — and varied — collaborators.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a brief bio of each of this years contributors:

Brian Edlefson: Founding principal and creative director at Thesis with a long history designing for prominent organizations like Herman Miller, Target, MoMA, and Whirlpool GCD. Brian achieved an MFA from Yale in 2005; his work has been recognized internationally and is included in the National Design Archives at the U.S. Library of Congress.

Terrance Weinzierl: Terrance Weinzierl is a type designer working with Monotype, and he’s been exclusively designing typefaces and lettering since 2008. He’s worked on fonts for Microsoft, Google, and Barnes & Noble, among many others. When not working on custom fonts, Terrance fills out his professional practice by doing calligraphy, lettering, and letterpress.

Michael Nÿkamp: An illustrator-turned-designer born and raised in Ontario Canada – now a citizen of the United States. Michael’s only complaint (politely filed of course) is that there are never enough pencils in the office. Principal of mkn design, an independently owned design and illustration studio creating thoughtful, compelling design experiences.

Jody Williams: Illustrator with an MFA degree from the School of Visual Arts. Published with New York Times, Time Magazine, Steelcase, KitchenAid, Herman Miller and others.

At the end of the campaign we'll email each backer a short questionnaire at which point you may specify which print(s) you would like.

Thank you so much for your support. We're looking forward to getting these prints out into the world.

Risks and challenges

Printing will be handled by an amazingly talented screen printer, with roughly a 5-6 week turnaround. That process will only begin after the project is fully funded, so expect posters to be done and shipped early September. Any delays in this process will be minimal.

Shipping requires you to fill out your backer survey at the end of the project. It's super easy. We'll get your address from the survey. Please be sure to fill your address out exactly as it should read. If there are mistakes, we'll contact you to clarify.

If for any reason there are unexpected delays, we'll be updating everyone with frequent progress reports. You'll know about it and can be sure we'll handle it right away! Thank you again.
