Fantasy is often light. But life isn't always light.
Sovereign's Dread is aimed right at that part of you.
Howdy. My name is James Wilkinson, hailing from Adelaide South Australia. Last year I completed my Masters Degree in Visual Art & Design, and this is me doing what I would like to do most in life; making a graphic novel.
Sovereign's Dread has been the world I've been creating for the past three years and I think is finally ready to bring to life. It is Dark Fantasy (think Dark Souls or Berserk) and doesn't shy away from confronting themes or a bit of the old ultra violence. The intention is that it holds a mirror up to our world today, only placed in a fantasy setting to emphasise these issues. Addiction (to magical substances,) the power of sovereignty (over summoned monsters,) and conflict for resource (not oil but alchemical materials) all illustrate this to make a slightly biazzaro setting, although the characters within aim to be as true to our world as possible.
The novel itself is paced in a way somewhere in between a Japanese manga and superhero graphic novel. It's world is revealed in detail through interactions and actions rather than narration boxes, with a focus of showing every motion to create as cinematic an effect as possible. The world is at first a mystery and gradually revealed. Book 1 takes place in the country of Autalia, as it is under attack from a force of mysterious beings from across the sea, and starts with one of our main characters, Demian, being suddenly snapped out of his slovenly ways by the attack. It assembles a contrasting cast brought together for the need to survive and eventually heads into the Dukedom of Hublin. The first story arc seeks to include four of the five countries within the realm, each with their unique cultures and designs. This realm has been in an internal conflict for centuries, so what hope is their when an overpowering force from across the ocean arrives?
The other central component to Sovereign's Dread is magic. Magic in Sovereign's Dread is a thing mankind has no natural affinity for. It is a new technology and mankind is stabbing in the dark trying to utilise it which is really not going well. But I think I've rambled enough about the themes..
Sovereign's Dread aims to create characters that blur the archetypes and is primarily a character driven story. The three main characters live in contrasting life circumstances, and yet each has problems of their own:
-The powerful battlemage faced with mortality, his power the source of his ailment.
-The monetarily poor lost soul guardsman, trying to find his place and worth in the world.
-The dutchess born into a position of great responsibility, suddenly forced to account for the fate of her country.
Sovereign's Dread Book 1 is a fully covered approximately 90 page gloss internal, matt/soft covered book containing the first three issues of Sovereign's Dread. I have completed plans for the first full story arc that would equate to three books, which would go ahead based on the success of this Kickstarter, and more loosely planned three arcs.
Below is a small of some pages from the first issue to give an idea of the effort put into each frame:
Here are the packages I've prepared to get you on board:
Roughly half the price attributed to the book is to cover printing costs. Then there is delivery from the awesome printers at Comics On Demand in Victoria, and the slices that Kickstarter and Stripe take. What's left is enough for some Ramen Noodles and maybe a beer, but I'm not doing it for the money, I'm doing it for the opportunity to do it, so that's ok. You giving me that opportunity would be truly amazing, if you think the product is worth it.
Risks and challenges
With the first issue of the book completed before this kickstarter I've realised I can do it! Time management wasn't an issue and I've planned my workflow according to how that went, with a little extra leeway. But time is a fickle thing and I don't want to compromise the work. I am aiming for completion by the end of September.
New work will not be sought for the duration of the production of this volume if the project is funded.
Living in Australia postage overseas can be a little hefty, so many apologies for that but they are thorough. I've gone as cheap as I can with the shipping and used the weight capacity to within fifty grams of the maximum before the price doubles by throughly experimenting with packaging. I believe it's certainly worth it for the physical product.
Also, please be advised the novel contains scenes of graphic violence and course language and may not be suitable for children.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
