Portal: Arts and Music Space
Portal will be a unique community space encompassing live music, artistic performances, installations and food.
Born out of Portal Radio - a Porto based electronic radio station, Portal will expand into a cultural arts space encompassing live music performances, art installations and food. Portal will function as a non profitable cultural association, supporting artists and musicians from Porto and beyond that can utilise the space for recording, networking and creating.
The large underground space is situated at Rua de Bonjardim - with many creatives living and working nearby. The space is in close proximity to Marquês metro station, and situated below street level with a size of approx. 300m2. it's ideal for keeping noise to a minimum and will be professionally sound-proofed to keep the surrounding residents happily unaware...
Portal functions currently as passion project and as a means for connecting like minded people who enjoy music and art together. We have built a dedicated following who enjoy coming to our small space, and want Portal to spread her wings! Our idea was born out of the necessity to step away from the established commercial club scene and to start something new and out of the ordinary - to enjoy with the community of people who share our values. We want to give a platform to talented musicians and artists that might not operate within the usual circuit...
The space will function as a music venue on Fridays and Saturdays, with live music performances and DJ's later on. We'll have a kitchen run by pro chef Jonathan Cairns serving hot meals and snacks throughout the afternoon and into the evening with the capacity to serve dinners for larger groups in a communal style. We will have a bar that can be also be accessed throughout the week should we open for art exhibitions or workshops.
During the week a part of the space can be used as a professional recording studio for musicians, and we will host workshops and provide a space for artists to work with their materials. It should serve as a base for networking and bringing people together to work and learn. The kitchen will be operating during the afternoon to supply our associates and members of the community with food.
We want to divide the space into three main areas to make best use of the size of the space and contain sound in the most efficient way. The additional space will be contained and used for private recording sessions. These areas will be:
- Communal eating area with a long bench so people can eat and drink together
- Kitchen and bar area
- Dance floor and stage area with a PA system. Our equipment should accommodate live bands, performance artists and DJ’s - we have all DJ equipment and a basic stage set up ready to go.
Our supper club created by Pro chef Jonathan Cairns which we hope to expand on a larger scale, serving delicious international dishes.
we are looking for investment to finance the works that need to be carried out, building materials and equipment for the venue. We estimate the need for €10,000 which would finance the division of the space, sound proofing, and the construction of the bar and kitchen area (we have all of the equipment for the kitchen). Your investment in our project however small will help create a truly unique venue for all of us to enjoy here in Porto.
Risks and challenges
The challenges of this project will come from the works inside the building itself and raising enough money for a basic sound set up. The rent for the space is quite low - and we will ensure that the weekend events are covering our costs for the rent and bills. Our experience with Portal Radio has given us insight into hosting events and costs so we feel we have the necessary skills to expand Portal into a larger ventureLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
