About

A Budding Game Developer

Hi, my name is Paul (PJ) Landon. I am currently a student who wants to make his games/dreams of developing games a reality!

I have found the Game Design program at my school, and realize that this is what I want to do with my life. I also see that I want to strike out on my own and make a name for myself (if you can't bet on yourself, who else can you bet on, right?)! After seeing that I might actually be talented in this, I have decided to take a chance on myself to develop/produce my own games (if the legends in the business can do, why not I, right?).


Champion's Flight

This is my FIRST project that I want to try to make a real game (one that isn't just created in the vacuum, known as a "school project). This was a project that I've started/am currently developing for my Studio project. I loved the idea so much that I want to try to turn it into something great!

The Idea:

Like the summary, this game is inspired by a couple of ideas.

- Star Fox. I wanted to mimic the arcade-y flight controls in the game, but only in the N64/Game Cube versions, as the free-roaming was cooler than the on-rails of the SNES version to me.

- F-Zero. Because, well, it's awesome. It also holds the idea of "competition" (including in the underrated GX version). Which I liked, wanted to include, and it possessed a cool Sci-Fi feel that I love.

- Olympic Skiing. Because of the way, it's set up, and how it's executed was always interesting to me. The fact that you have only a set of runs in one race event provides a lot of drama and would be interesting for this game.

- Beetle Racing Adventure. Because I always loved the way that game was structured. How there's always a sense of progression, and how many, many (manymanymany), hours I wasted playing that game.

So in short, the game will be from Point-A to Point-B. During a racing event, the player will have 3-4 runs of the track. There will be a Standings table that will show position/times changes. The Top-3 will win trophies. All the participants will get points (like in a real racing series) for the Season Standings. If the player gets Top-3 at the end of the season, the player will progress up to faster ships, longer/more difficult maps, and more competitive racing series! (From Rookie events to Champion's events, about 4 in total)


Development and Current Progress

Currently, I am deep in development of this game. I am basically putting on many "hats" for this game. I am the: Designer, Artist, and Programmer for this game.

The fact that I've gotten this far is pretty amazing to me. But I am almost to the point where I can at least get a Pre-Alpha done and ready for play-testing!

I have; a website up for the game, put the game up on IndieDB, looking to put it up on Steam (as well as other outlets, depending partially on funds raised), and I currently have a GitHub Waffle site up to track current progress for everyone to see.

I have built everything up so-far so much so that I am actually gaining confidence that I could actually make this into a cool game! But I do need help, as I'm a college student, my funds are...Rather limited...So any possibility of funding my work I would always be open to. So, any help/donations would always be appreciated!

Risks and challenges

The current challenge that I am concerned about is supporting myself while I develop the game. Being that I've been trying to fast-track my degree, I've been taking 5-6 classes for college. This sort of forced me into school as my job. While this is good, it sort of put me in a tough spot financially.

Really, the amount I'm asking will help me support myself for 6 months. With the 3-4 months coming off this semester of game development, it will put me in about 9-10 months of total development time. I feel fairly confident that designing/developing the game wouldn't be too much of an issue (was able to get all art done within 1 week). Being a Veteran, I'm usually highly motivated anyway (including when it's something I love doing), so I have no problem getting this game made.

Being that I really, REALLY, want to produce this game, I will probably be working on it non-stop (I REALLY want to get it done before the ideal release date of October the 31st). But I'd like to be able to at least not worry about not having enough money for rent and food while doing this.

So any help for me to get this game created and released would be a great help! (Plus, if it would have an added cool bonus for new maps/ships collaborations for donations!)
