HOMELAND INSECURITY is about exploding the modern myth, insanity and fear around the fabricated so-called culture war. Having lived and worked across Europe, in Mexico and now the US, I know shared joy in sincere artistic expression is universal.
In my 'day job' - something new to me, living in the US - language interpretation, I work mostly with Mexicans at medical clinics and in court. Their alienation is often severe. I feel it. It gets into my art. Both in and outside the studio, I struggle with the issue of 'identity'. I'm no longer certain what 'homeland' means, what 'security' means.

I've toured my company to Poland once and every few years I take them to perform with companies in Mexico. I also facilitate Mexican companies to come here. Ciudad Interior is the 4th Mexican company I am bringing to perform in Portland and Seattle.
Artists coming to the US often feel insecure. Homeland Security may deny entry to anyone, without warning, without reason. Twice in 10 years Mexican colleagues were turned away. Zimmerman won't return after his touring Steinway was destroyed by US Customs.
This project brings together artists, across borders, across cultures. In fact, cultures not so very different - cultures that deserve a lot of 'myth busting' - stereotypes stifle us all.
American artists are not all about Pop. Mexican artists are not all about Mariachi. Dance theatre artists the world over ARE a lot about engaging corporeal expression, riveting drama and gripping music; especially when it's honest and about real lives.
