Update #2: Stretch Goal £2000
Thanks to everyone who has helped us get as far as we have in such short time! We have decided that if we reach £2000 we will be able to buy a tripod and equipment to help improve on the lighting.
Monsterous Murders is a two minute stop-motion puppet animation. It is based upon a short story by George Kordonis and is set in Victorian times where a series of monstrous murders are taking place.
We have already completed the storyboard and animatic, and have started building a small section of one of the sets, and a rough version of the puppet that we used in our test shot, as seen in our video.
We would like to keep everyone up to date with our progress throughout the production of Monsterous Murders. We will do this via Facebook posts and Kickstarter project updates, and we will also share our process of making the puppets and sets.
Together, we make short stop-motion animations.
We have already made several short films, all of these were self-funded, and therefore produced on quite a low budget; this forced us to compromise, using only the cheaper options available. We now feel that the time has come to start improving on the production value of our films.
Our first couple of films were made whilst we were at university, not being able to afford to buy an armature (the skeleton of the puppet), we made our own out of wire. We spent a lot of time having to perform surgery on our puppets during the shoot because their limbs kept breaking.
Once we left uni we were able to scrape together enough to invest in a ball and socket joint armature. Animating with it was amazing.. such smooth and fluent movement with no breakages!
Luckily we are able to re-use the ball and socket joint armature for the Beggar in Monsterous Murders; however, we will need one more of these armatures for the Lady in the film. The other 4 puppets in the film, which include 2 miniatures, can be made with wire armatures... we now know better ways of making them stronger!
Apart from the mechanics of the puppet, we'd like to improve on their appearance. We'd like to make the heads and hands as usual, out of Sculpey, but then make moulds of these, then cast them in silicone. This will give the puppet's skin a more realistic appearance, and will be easier to animate with, especially the fingers. Using better quality materials, like silicone, will increase the budget for this film, and this is why we need your help. :)
Monsterous Murders is comprised of multiple sets and puppets that we will be making ourselves. With the aid of funding, we would like to use more professional techniques. For example, we would like to be able to have camera moves, which require specialist equipment. We'd like to invest in a programme called Dragonframe which will make the process of animating faster and easier. All this will mean that the production budget will be much higher than our previous films.
The funding that we are asking for will cover:
- Equipment (tripod head)
- 2 months studio rent
- Travel expenses
- Reward costs
Risks and challenges
We aim to complete this film by the end of July. Our production schedule will allow enough time to redo shots if needed. Considering that we will be using new methods, production may take longer than planned; however, we will account for this too. We will keep our backers notified on our progress throughout the production, with updates on Kickstarter, as well as more frequent posts on our Facebook page.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
