About

The Stroke of Midnight is a mystery Visual Novel in a modern setting, based in a London detective agency. Featuring a diverse cast of characters, a developed background, powerful mystery and LGBT romance, we hope to bring something fresh to a genre we feel is underdeveloped.  

The novel tells the story of Rowan Cox, who awakes in an empty, white room with a mysterious girl, and no memory of how he got there. From there, the story blossoms into one of mystery, intrigue, and love both fraternal and romantic, depending on the choices of the player.

Many will look at our budget and think we're being overly ambitious. However, we do not want to create yet another short english visual novel. The script will be somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 words, with extensive CG coverage and full voice acting – a scale comparable to AAA Japanese visual novels.  

Writing – When one sells a visual novel, one is selling a story. Good writing is integral to this, and so we have spared no expense in budgeting for writers and editors. Luckily for us, our writer is also an experienced python programmer, who will handle the game engine. 

Art – Without art, a visual novel is just a novel. The better the art, and the better it meshes together, the more immersive the experience. For this reason, we have budgeted heavily for both character and background artists, who will be in constant communication. 

Music – Immersive music is also a large part of the visual novel experience, but a large expense if done properly. The budget for music provided here will include a whole soundtrack created for the game, but the stretch goal will allow us to license existing music that fits the game.  

Voice Acting – A lot of indie visual novels forgo voice acting as unnecessary, which I find to be a serious hit to the immersion of the game. Although our budget for this is lower than for other assets, we have motivated people in the wings willing to do the work, including voicing for the protagonist, something sadly lacking in many visual novels.

Rowan Cox 

The protagonist, Rowan has little memory of his life before the start of the game. 

Josh Butler 

Rowan's childhood friend, Josh owns his own detective agency. He's gentle, but also tall and athletic, and not above teasing his friends and co-workers.

Stanley Cooper

An old friend of Josh's, Stanley provides muscle for Josh when he needs it. He's a quiet person, but fiercely loyal. (Concept art in progress)

Chloe Lance

A friend of Josh's from college, and co-owner of the agency. Witty and sensible, she's also trained to physical perfection. 

Dominic King 

A forensics expert with a sadistic streak, Dominic joined the agency at Chloe's request. He's mostly concerned with having fun, although finds his co-workers lack of focus at work annoying. 

The Girl 

A mysterious girl trapped in a white room. If she feels anything, she doesn't let it show.

 

£14000 - Android Edition

The game will be ported for Android at this level.

£16000 - More Music

At this goal, we will license music for the game. We already have pieces in mind that fit, and they will be used alongside our original music.

£18000 - More Art

At this goal, we will increase the count of CGs and BGs in the game.

£21000 - Dominic Route

At this goal, Dominic will be given his own route in the game, with a strong emphasis on the setting, and the mysteries of the plot.

More stretch goals will be planned if it comes to it.

Risks and challenges

As a new studio, our main challenge is ensuring communication is maintained and deadlines met. We have no other projects taking up our time, and we are not applying to any third party distributers.

Our small staff means that personal problems can cause significant delays in production. Although most of the staff has some experience with visual novels, this is the first commercial project for many of us. As such, we will need to be extra careful with funds.

However, the game engine is already mostly complete, and all members of staff have shown to be able to create assets quickly, at good quality.
