About
The Learnometer team including Prof. Stephen Heppell have conducted research over many years that confirms that poor light levels, inappropriate temperatures, distracting sound volumes and rhythms, excessive humidity, air pollution, CO2 pooling, and air pressure can and do impair learning. We haven't found an exam room yet that wasn't damaging students' chances!
We have created hardware and software that automatically monitor these factors and with our full LOM device, uploads it in the background to the cloud so you can see, and track, your data, then compare it to others.
You will be joining a hugely important research project with immediate support for your learning environment. The hardware you will be funding and will receive enables any place where learning happens to be monitored. You can adjust temperature, sound, airflow and light to be optimum to make learning as good as it can be. We have been dismayed by how disengaging and damaging the wrong levels can be.
By joining hopefully many hundreds or thousands of other Learnometer research stations online, you'll be able to see how you compare to others and to your own past; as more people join, our platform and research will get ever more accurate and your learning environment gets ever better! We know a LOT already, but as we learn more you'll be the first to see our research 'hunches" and then conclusions. What we know, you will know; for example although we know the damage each "wrong" variable can bring, beyond that the interrelationship between the variables is hugely complex.
Three levels of hardware and connectivity are available: Micro-LOM, Mini-LOM and the Full-fat LOM device.
Micro provides temperature, pressure and humidity readings.
Mini gives you the above, plus light and sound.
The full LOM reads and uploads temperature, humidity, pressure, light, sound, CO2 and pollution via a wireless connection. It really is a ground-breaking device and our cloud backend will let you log, record and compare data too.
Risks and challenges
The Learnometer devices, and their analysed data, offer the potential to significantly make learning better by optimising any physical environment for learning. We need your help to move from our tested functioning prototypes and remarkable research data to a large scale roll out with substantial impact for all.
We have developed a unique solution. No prior solution exists.
We found teachers and learners to be simply unaware of so many of these learning environment variables. Visiting 55 examination rooms for example, we found every one to be damaging, usually very damaging, to the prospects of the students within them. In all our test cases and spaces, we have found that addressing and improving those variables, in line with research, has significantly improved learners engagement, attention, retention and more.
