About the Game
You play as occult beast hunters trying to stop a spreading corruption. Each of you is inflicted with the Hunter’s Blood, a condition that not only makes you immune to the transformative effects of the corruption but allows you to control it.
Explore the evolving wilds of the Warrens, a place where you can find strange landscapes of gurgling meat and discover cultures of sentient slime. Uncover the world’s secrets as you hunt the infected beasts of the Warrens and search for the source of the corruption.
Children of the Beast is a game you can immediately pick up and play because of our included sandbox adventure. It is structured similarly to an interactive fiction game, allowing you to get started without any prep. Also, to make things even smoother we're developing a free companion app for Android devices which hosts the adventure and streamlines the overall rpg experience (Although, neither the game nor the adventure require the app to play!).
What Makes Children of the Beast Different?
- Attach monstrous limbs to your character with fleshsmithing
- Mutate occult abilities with the virulent corruption
- Explore a living, crawling world

Beware the wilds of the Warrens. They always evolve and change. Always seeking to become a part of you.
The Warrens are a living landscape, constantly changing and adapting to the lives on and within them. Maps are almost useless, requiring scouting parties to constantly update others on how the lands have changed. It is a world of the bizarre and unexpected, where weirdness awaits at every turn.
Hunt Monstrous Beasts
The corruption has spread to the beasts of the Warrens, possessing them with an infectious madness. During your journey to find the source of the corruption, hunting the tainted beasts will improve your strength and your chances of survival.
But the corruption twists their bodies as well. Some creatures gain strange occult abilities, while others’ shapes are mutated with bizarre new limbs and protrusions. You must learn what you can of these creatures and their occult capabilities if you ever hope to overcome them.
Gain Power from Elder Deities
Ancient, inscrutable beings exist within the Warrens, and none are more omnipresent than the Elder Deities. For unknown reasons they assist humanity in its struggle for survival, and those with the Hunter’s Blood are of heightened interest to these divine creatures. But who knows what dark whims you may be aiding?
Hunters are talented, motivated people who are powerful enough to explore a world most don't get a chance to see. Watch you characters evolve as they find living artifacts, learn the language of writhing worms that eat memories of the dead, and engage in reactive, tactical combat with the beasts that try to stop you.
Mutate with the Corruption
Your hunter's blood can control the corruption, mutating your body as your connection with the occult deepens. But society does not wish this, fearing what you might become. Destroying corruption will reward you with riches, but consuming corruption will reward you with transformative power.
Choosing to gain corruption is not a choice between good or evil, it is a choice of how much you want to stretch the limits of your humanity.
Evolve Monstrous Limbs with Fleshsmithing
Fleshsmithing is a craft that allows you to reattach lost body parts, but it also holds a more transformative purpose.
Through the art of fleshsmithing, you can consume the parts of creatures to grow them as your own. Gain the special attacks and abilities of the creatures you once feared! But will the part's lingering consciousness damage your psyche?
Destroy Individual Body Parts
Slash each piece of a beast thanks to Children of the Beast’s in-depth wound system. You can try to hack off intimidating limbs or interrupt a devastating blast of energy with a quick, hopeful blow to the head.
Tame the Beasts... or Become Them
Not all beasts need to be slain.
If you can cure the infectious madness of a beast, it will become a powerful ally to aid you in your journeys. But corrupted beasts are intelligent, they can even speak. Let them join the ranks of hunters and play as the beasts. Every new beast you tame unlocks it as a new playable species, expanding the reach of humanity.
For people with an Android device, we have developed a special companion app that helps manage and streamline the rules of the game. Here are some key features of the core app, and with enough support we hope to add many more! (Including an iOS version!)
Playing through the adventure is not like typical rpg modules, instead it's structured similarly to an interactive fiction game. Each scene has a dedicated page, detailing to the GM key details, block text to read-aloud or paraphrase, special hidden interactions, and decision points that progress the players into a new area.
There are also side-tabs that provide considerable extra detail:
- Comprehensive descriptions of NPCs and objects in the current area
- Charts for random encounters
- Fast travel options
- ...a section for character death? -DEATH IS NOT THE END-
If you do not have access to the app, we will release a free HTML version of the adventure you can use at release.
Be guided step-by-step through all the options of creating your character. Either follow along while building a character sheet, or make a digital character sheet that the app can track for further digital features.
Progression and item management are also included!
There are many ways in which the app helps streamline combat.
- No more rolling for initiative! Turn order is automatically determined as soon as combat begins.
- Track all of your abilities and status effects! Even the most complex abilities function quickly and easily.
- Streamlined Wound System! Touch the target body part and sever that beast's head once and for all.
Why wait? Go HERE to try a prototype version of the app that includes the first few sessions of the adventure. Try creating some characters too!
The prototype rulebook is also available HERE. The adventure teaches you how to play, but the rulebook contains all of the extra detail. We will add more secrets of the world as the campaign progresses!
We're regularly streaming during the campaign! Check out our channel here!
- Q&A streams are Tuesdays at 6 pm pacific!
- Gameplay streams of an ongoing campaign are Wednesdays at 8 pm pacific!
- Deep Dive streams, where we'll look at a creature, piece of lore, or mechanic more closely, will be every Friday and Sunday at 6 pm pacific!
Watch a quick overview of character creation (and a bit of progression)!
In our ongoing campaign, our hunters tracked down the Sahidarah...

Risks and challenges
The core rules for the game are largely finished. We'll be using this funding to polish up final aspects of the game and finish editing and designing the book. In fact, a large portion of this cost is going towards printing costs and polishing a complete version of the companion app, which takes quite a bit of resources to get right. The reality is, the more funding we have, the less we'll have to focus on our day jobs to get the project done.
We are a small team of three people, and sometimes that means we get things done slowly. We have a vision for Children of the Beast and we want to make it the best we can. We're committed to our April 2020 release date, but even if we run into delays, we will continue releasing public versions of the app and the adventure until final shipment.
The companion app is certainly a challenge, but luckily, we're not starting from square one. We've been developing this app for a long long time already, and it's stable enough where we can continue releasing updates to the app as we continue to work on it. The biggest challenge with the app is more of a design problem than an engineering one. There are endless ways in which an interface can prove to be clunky or obscure, but we'll continue to refine what we have especially as we continue to get feedback.
We’ve been working on this game for five years, and with a sizable network of contacts we built up over those five years we’ve grown confident in our ability to deliver. We already released a working version of the app and continue updating it for public release. The rules work and are available for testing, and playtesting the adventure with so many people has been a wonderful experience.
We can show our work because we love what we do, and so you can see for yourself what we can create.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
