About this project
***NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY ON www.staklifestyle.com ***
The wallet by STAK is a compact card, cash and receipt holder made from cork. It is slim and minimal without sacrificing comfort and practicality. No fastenings, no flaps, no fuss.
Our combined love of minimalism and design led us to create this beautiful wallet that is compact yet still flexible and comfortable in your pocket. The wallet is exactly the same width as a card but we have given it extra length so that even when it is really full it maintains its elegant, tapered, thin ends. These tapered ends make it so easy to slide into a pocket and the sustainable, vegan, soft cork leather means it is pretty gentle on your pocket linings too.
The spring mechanism hidden inside keeps your cards tightly gripped and secure. Please check out our shake test below so you don't just have to take our word for it!
Loading the wallet is quick and simple, just take your cards in one stack, open the wallet and pop them all in.
The wallet is incredibly thin when only loaded with a few cards but still maintains its minimalist aesthetic even when filled to the brim. What sort of user are you??
*The wallet can hold up to 15 cards while still looking neat and minimal but we would recommend not going over 10 if you want the wallet to keep a tight grip on just 1 or 2 cards again.
Through testing and using the wallet we have noticed that people fall in to 2 categories of users.... fanners and squeezers.
At less than 5mm thick and wonderfully flexible our wallet is perfectly pocketable and almost invisible in your jeans!
The wallet is made from a unique, polymer reinforced cork ply which we created during the development process. This is coupled with just the right tension spring to achieve the perfect balance of springiness, to grip the cards securely and return to its original shape, rigidity to keep its neat and minimal appearance and softness, to be kind to your pockets and comfortable to carry around.
It is thin, light and tactile. Not only is the cork beautiful but it is sustainable too. The bark of the cork tree is removed without damaging the tree which continues to grow more bark. What's more, we think it is equally nice to the touch as leather, if not more so and no cows were harmed in the making of these wallets!
The cork is very easily cleaned, just use warm soapy water, or, as parents of young children we can also vouch for the power of baby wipes, they bring it up a treat!
When the wallet comes to the end of its (hopefully very long) life, it can be stripped down; all the inner bits are recyclable and the cork will biodegrade.
Each wallet will come in its own minimal, recyclable packaging. Super thin just like the wallet.
We are Gino and Becky and together we are STAK. We have always wanted to work together and for the last year and a half we have been working hard to try and make that a reality. Now we are ready to go! This wallet is our first design to make it to a finished product but we have many other designs we can't wait to show you. We envision STAK to be a design led, minimalist, lifestyle focused brand with only useful, well designed products that will enhance, not clutter your day to day life. Here is a bit about our backgrounds...
Gino has worked as a carpenter and joiner for 14 years specialising in furniture making and property restoration. He has incredible patience and has spent a lot of the last few years working on restoration projects at the beloved Brighton Pavilion. He is the man you want to be quality checking your wallets!!
Becky has a degree in fashion design and worked as a pattern cutter before setting up a screen printed hosiery label, hose. Her tights have been stocked in shops all over the world including Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie and have been featured in the Guardian and Emerald Street. She is used to getting bulk orders out on time and will work hard to make sure that your wallets arrive safely and promptly.
This wallet has been a year and a half in the making and has been through a lot of changes but we feel like we now have something beautiful, original and a joy to use.
The wallet isn't a prototype anymore but a fully working finished product. We have found all our suppliers, tested the wallet ourselves for a few months and with other people for the last month. We have had brilliant feedback from our testers and are ready to release it. This is where you, the lovely kickstarter backers come in. We need a good bulk order to kick start STAK. We need the quantities to get all the components for a reasonable cost and we need a bit extra in order to invest in a small amount of tooling, custom jigs and dies.
It will be made right here in the UK and this won't change, however well the wallet does.
If successful, we will spend the first month after the campaign ordering all our materials, packaging, tools, custom dies and jigs. We have looked into all these components and think a month is realistic to do this. As soon as we have all this then production will start! We plan to start shipping out orders mid October and think it is realistic to have 2000 sent out by the end of November. If our campaign does really well, we think, with our current set up it is realistic to have 3000 out in time for Christmas and if we were lucky enough for it to be even more successful than that we would look into expanding our team with the aim of having all orders delivered in time for Christmas.
Even since settling on the current design so much work has gone into fabric selection, different backings, fixings, cores, springs, getting our branding on the wallet, tension.... the list goes on.
Risks and challenges
There is always going to be a risk of something unexpected happening but we have done everything we can to make this campaign as risk free as possible. The wallet is a finished product, we have tested it for months tweaking as we go and have now had other people testing it for us too. Our suppliers are lined up and are happy fulfilling large orders. Becky has experience of getting large orders of products out on time and will use this experience to make things run as smoothly as possible. Our backers are extremely important to us and as previous backers of other projects we understand how important regular updates are. We will post updates regularly and you will be the first to know of our successes or potential problems and you can also follow us and contact us on instagram and twitter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
