One morning, Michael Treehorn wakes up early before his wife, and quietly begins winterizing the house and preparing for the change in weather—all to ensure his wife’s future comfort before he leaves her and their marriage behind.
Knock Softly is a short film that examines the intricacies of a marriage, and is a story about the difficulties and complexities of saying goodbye.
In March, I shot Knock Softly with a 20 person crew, and directed my father, Raymond Meeks, as the lead actor in the film. The shoot went wonderfully and the footage is excellent—we are incredibly excited to put it together.
Today we are coming to you to ask for a bit of support in getting the film through post-production and distribution. In order to finish the film and send it to film festivals all around the world, our goal is to raise $3600 to get the film edited, mixed, and distributed.
Many thanks for your support, we are so enthusiastic about this project and can't wait to share it with you all!
Risks and challenges
Since we shot Knock Softly in March, the obstacles that many films encounter during production are behind us. We still face a few challenges however, as we try to maximize the potential of the film in the post-production and distribution process. Your donations will help us with these four aspects:
- Color Grading: Probably the most crucial part of post-production for this film. The story takes place early in the morning, in the moments right before sunrise. This gave us a very short time span to use the natural light that we needed. Though good cinematography can simulate our desired end result, a professional colorist is needed to help our film reach the next level. We've received quotes of $100-350/hour and so a total of $1500 is needed to make the necessary changes.
- Sound Mixing: Sound plays a vital role in films, often just as important as the visuals. Luckily for us, we have a large network of NYU students and graduates to help mix our project at lower than standard costs. A recent NYU graduate, with professional work under his belt, has offered a flat rate of $700 to mix the entire film.
- Composer: We aspired to create a specific mood since the development of the script. With little dialogue, certain parts of the film require a musical piece to help us achieve the atmosphere that we originally aimed for. It's often difficult to create such a subtle piece, but $800 allows for professional quality work.
- Festivals: We have extreme confidence in the potential of this film and want it to reach a mass audience. We intend to submit the finished film to festivals throughout the county and even some international ones. Cost of submission ranges from $40-80/festival. Your donations will help this film have the audience that it deserves.
