Two young teens, ABBEY (15) and SAM (17), find themselves alone at a swimming hole and cliff jumping spot in the California desert. When Sam flirtatiously attempts to pull Abbey off the 50-foot cliff with him, Abbey is forced to defend herself. An initially innocent summer outing turns into a near death experience, as Abbey is confronted with her worst fears and given no choice but to overcome them.

We wrote the script in the summer of 2016, both of us having experienced one side of a brother-sister sibling duo and eager to reflect on the nature of siblinghood and adolescence, especially as it relates to small town Americana and burgeoning sexuality. As we decided upon a cliff jumping spot as our central setting, and an accident on the cliff’s edge as our central climax, we also found the opportunity to explore something contemporary and relevant beneath the surface - the nature of sexual consent.
Furlong is a deeply personal story about youth and the loss of innocence, and about a young woman learning how to stand up for herself.
We’ve spent the last ten months refining the script, finding locations, and gathering the cast and crew; the production puzzle is complete, and the only obstacle now standing in our way is financial resources. Thank you so much for taking a look!

The rest of our crew includes:
Cinematographer: Stefan Weinberger
Stunt Coordinator: Mindy Kelly
Production Designer: Gabi Zeccheto
Your financial support will go towards the entire production of our short film:
Equipment: A professional camera and lens package is the bulk of our equipment budget. However we also need things like lights, stands, sandbags, walkie-talkies, tables, chairs, stunt harnesses, and more.
Locations: We are shooting at the rock pools of the Malibu Creek State Park. It's a stunning location with a watering hole surrounded by large rock formations... and it's pricy. In addition to the cost of a general permit, we also have to pay a large fee for parking and an ever larger fee for a park ranger and lifeguard who will be supervising the entire shoot.
Stunt: In order to make sure the stunt is safe and effective, we have hired a wonderful stunt coordinator names Mindy Kelly who has assembled an amazing team of experts. This includes a water safely expert, a lead rigger, and two additional riggers to enable us to have the actors on wires.
Food: A well fed crew is a happy crew, so food is very important. We will have to feed breakfast, lunch and crafty (snacks) to 25 people for three days. That adds up quickly.
Props and costumes: Gabi Zecchetto is our talented Costume and Production Designer. Your donations will go towards helping her turn these actors into their characters through costumes and props, and our house location into a 15-year-old girl's room.
Post-production: In addition to standard post production such as color correction, sound mixing and sound design, we also need some money in the budget for "wire removal".... this is a special effect where the wires that are used to secure the actors in the stunt must be painted out of the image.
With these specifics in mind, we come to you humbly to ask for your support. We are so grateful for any donation of any amount —it’s all enormously helpful!
Thanks so much for your support, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
With enormous gratitude,
- Adam Meeks, Sophie Brooks, and the entire Furlong team.
Risks and challenges
The climax of our story requires a particular kind of stunt on the cliff’s edge, where a character is incidentally pushed backwards and off the edge — the costs of ensuring a safe and effective stunt are substantial, and make up a significant chunk of the total budget. Stunt coordinators, stunt performers, a life guard, a park ranger, and several stunt hands will all be required to ensure the scene is executed the right way. This isn’t cheap, and we don’t take this amount of money lightly, but we truly believe in this film and recognize the stunt’s importance within the larger story being told.
With your generous donations we can ensure a safe and effective stunt, and as a result, a better movie!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
