Betting on Big Opportunities
Dreamhack Atlanta and Our New Pricing Model
We've got a big weekend coming up here at D20Studios - one with the potential to change our destiny and make a huge impact among players, streamers, press and game industry professionals! It's called Dreamhack, a massive gathering of people dedicating their weekend to playing and enjoying games. I may sound ambitious, but's that my job as an entrepreneur - to always look for the BIG WIN, to get people FIRED UP, to SEIZE EVERY OPPORTUNITY that comes our way. Of course, I'm humble in my expectations, but always looking up, eyes gleaming of being the game studio - the one with heart, the one with passion - that you all love and have supported!
So, let's dive in and talk about what's coming this week!
Summoners Fate - Best Early Access Game - Dreamhack Indie Playground
Summoners Fate was recently awarded the title "Best Early Access" game of Dreamhack Atlanta 2018. They've invited us to showcase Summoners Fate in their Indie Playground, and we intend to take full advantage of this amazing opportunity. Since Dreamhack is all about bringing in your custom PC rig and gaming nonstop throughout the weekend, we're going to host a Summoners Fate Multiplayer Competition. Peter and I will be handing out free play keys to attendees at our booth. These will grant access to our multiplayer early access and enable players to install and play on their own machines.
We have over $500 in prize give-aways including adorable handmade plush armored squirrels that players will be able to win. We're going to be up on stage on Friday November 16th at 2:30PM EST getting folks pumped to join us in multiplayer battles. We want to see everyone hurling squirrels, summoning legions of skeletons, and mind controlling their friends to the breaking point of madness!
Summoners Fate - Game Pitch Championship Finalist
Our fun at Dreamhack doesn't end with our showcase - we've also been selected as a finalist in their exclusive Game Pitch Championship. We'll compete alongside 13 other indie games for the title of "Best Game Pitch" in a Shark Tank inspired competition.
We have a stellar presentation that we've been carefully preparing for months, and we intend to take home the trophy. It's all in the delivery, and to give a small taste of what you can expect, I ask the question: "What if your attack was throwing squirrels?"
And what if you could transform squirrels into super human mutants and overrun your opponent with them? You'd feel like a badass! And that's just one of hundreds of possibilities to win in the most creative and satisfying way with Summoners Fate.
New Business Model and Pricing Structure
Preparing for the Game Pitch Competition forced us to look closer at our pricing structure and what we can achieve as a business (both on our current trajectory and if we had additional funding support). Summoners Fate has been carefully planned for years now, and in the time since its inception, the market has changed. I've seen many warning signs suggesting a pure free-to-play model could be detrimental to our studio's future. I've carefully considered: "What's the best course of action for both our team and our players?"
Our new plan is to launch Summoners Fate as a premium PC/Mac title, followed by a free to download mobile version. We're adopting a "Pay once, play anywhere" philosophy. When you buy the game on desktop, you'll get all of the launch content, and you'll be able to access your content when the mobile version launches at no additional cost. If you're entering the game for the first time on mobile, it's free, but with a subset of the content. To acquire more cards, you'll buy expansions. Unlike our competitors, these won't be random boosters and you won't have to dust cards to get the content you want. In fact, we plan to include starter decks so you can play with new factions immediately, as well as enjoy adventures to onboard you to their mechanics and unlock additional cards. This is an unprecedented value proposition - one we think is far more beneficial for players - and a key reason we believe players will choose Summoners Fate over the competition.
How does new pricing affect Kickstarter rewards?
Our Kickstarter campaign promised a free-to-play game, and I realize changing to a premium plus DLC expansion model is a major change. The very first concern I had was "How do I make this fair for the backers who supported us?"
I think it's a no-brainer to say everyone who supported us at the content level (Orc Battle Barrel and above) will receive the full retail game when it launches. And since Summoners Fate continues to be a service-driven product with continuous expansions, I'm confident we can still satisfy the incremental card rewards and exclusives. I don't have all the answers yet, but what I can say for certain is that I care deeply about ensuring everyone's sanctification. I will not let anyone down.
