The Scrimshaw is Judson College's arts and literary journal. As the nation's fifth oldest women's college, Judson was founded in 1838 by Baptists in Marion to educate young women in a Christian environment. Distributed campus-wide annually and available for purchase at Lulu.com, the magazine is sponsored by the Art and English Departments. A full student-led staff is responsible for the conception (theme, art, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.) of the journal and accepts literary contributions and art from students, staff, faculty, and members of our small, rural community.
We are lucky in that we have already secured enough funds to print approximately 175 copies of the 70 page journal (which we distribute for free). However, we want to make this year special and more inclusive, and in order to do that, we need to increase our page count and to include a DVD of our music and animation students playing their original work!
Risks and challenges
This is our third year producing the Scrimshaw (after a 5 year hiatus), and our collaborative efforts have improved each year. While we do not anticipate any issues regarding publishing, it is a student led journal and every year is a little different, so we are at the tender mercies of our fellow college students! However, our editors are a crackerjack team of young women, who have a unique ability to to keep all our contributors sticking to their calendars.
