About this project
Thanks to you guys, we've hit our goal! We still got a lot of work ahead of us, though, so NO TIME TO CELEBRATE JUST YET.
We posted a huge update in the backer blog about where we're at now and about our stretch goal to resurrect a certain other webcomic of ours, so go check it out!
Blaster Nation is a modern-day, slice-of-life webcomic focusing on the lives and struggles of a bunch of geeks living in the fictional city of Sucre Marron, Louisiana. Table-top enthusiasts, hardcore gamers, eccentric fanfiction writers, introverted anime fans, the fighting game community and more take center-stage in a comic that neither criticizes nor romanticizes the lives of nerds. Instead, our mission with Blaster Nation is to tell interesting, relatable tales of nerd life with all of its up and downs, its depressing moments, ridiculous nonsense, and sweet sentimentality.
I'm Brad Brown, the writer. Leslie Brown is the artist. We originally started this comic back in 2011 as a hobby project while we look for real jobs. With the help of Chloe from Go Get a Roomie (nsfw) and Joseph Stillwell of Hiveworks, not to mention the amazing fans that read every update, Blaster Nation has become a huge success. After three years and over 300 pages later, we think it's about time to start putting some of that into a book.
About the Book
With your help, we'd like to print the first eight chapters of Blaster Nation plus some bonus comics and extra art into a gigantic, fully-colored, 250+ page, 6" x 9" paperback book! Not content with just reprinting the webcomic pages, though, we'll also be adding new chapter covers for the older chapters that originally didn't have any, book-exclusive bonus art, and a few making-of pages to give you a little insight into the world of Blaster Nation!
We're going to be making a minimum of 500 books with this Kickstarter. Obviously, if everything goes super well and we get a crazy amount of pre-orders, we'll use the extra funds to order even more books.
Here's a little breakdown of where this $7,000 goal is going:
- Book printing: $3500
- Book Shipping and Materials: $2400
- Reward Fulfillment and ISBN: $500
- Kickstarter and Amazon Fees: $600
We're rounding up on a lot of these costs because we absolutely want to make sure we can cover EVERYTHING. $7,000 should be more than enough in that regard. Any extra money from the initial $7k will go towards upping the page count with more bonus material. If this Kickstarter does exceptionally well, then we'll start making some stretch goals to push this book's content even further.
It all starts here! Everybody who pledges even just a dollar will get backer blog access (so you can comment on updates and vote on things) and the Kickstarter-exclusive wallpaper! Here's a sneak peek!
Pledge $10 and you'll get yourself a sweet digital PDF of the book! You might not be getting the book itself, but you'll still get to see all the cool bonus stuff the book will have!
Here's what this whole thing's all about! Pledge $30 and you'll get the book we're trying so hard to make! 250+ fully-colored pages of hot awkward nerd action!
At $40, we'll personalize your book! Nothing too crazy, just an autograph from us or a little doodle from Leslie! Paying money just for us to draw in your book is kind of lame, though, so we'll also throw in some...
That's right! You'll get a three-piece sticker set of Sucre Marron's cutest pets, plus a sweet Blaster Nation logo! Stick them on some things so people can see that you really like ferrets, pigs, and something called Blaster Nation!
From here on out, you'll be getting a personalized book and stickers, but you'll also get...
Yep! A three-piece postcard set! Unfortunately, the Blaster Nation cast doesn't get out much. Instead of any scenic Sucre Marron landscapes or anything like that, these cards showcase the Blaster Nation crew in their natural habitat! They're totally usable, so send them to your friends and family! Just be prepared to have to explain why you would do such a thing.
Okay, we're pretty proud of these. At $80, you'll be getting everything from the lower-priced tiers, PLUS...
No, your eyes do not deceive you! You'll be getting a three-piece set of 11 x 17 posters, depicting the Blaster Nation cast way cooler than they've ever appeared before! Hang them on your wall and trick people into thinking that Blaster Nation isn't just about a bunch of nerds fighting about anime!
This is the point where things start to get crazy. At $150, you're getting everything we wrote about above, but now you get to own a piece of Blaster Nation history! You get...
Jumpin' Jehosaphat! You'll get one of the original, hand-drawn and inked pages from the first five chapters of Blaster Nation! Leslie put a crazy amount of work into these old comic pages, and they're still super impressive looking to this day! Unfortunately, you won't be able to pick your specific page, but we'll get you a page from whichever chapter you'd like (barring those don't completely run out)! We have to limit this tier to 35 backers only, but you can still get an original page in the higher-priced tiers!
Now this one's super nice! At $250, not only are you getting an original page and everything from the lower-priced tiers, but you'll be getting a commission!
Leslie and I will work with you on a full-colored, full-bodied commission! Doesn't have to be from Blaster Nation, it can be whatever character you want! It can even be NSFW, if you so choose! Multiple characters and semi-complicated backgrounds are totally okay! She'll be drawing these commissions digitally, but we can print your commission out on nice matte paper and send it to you with your book and other stuff! This tier only has 10 slots, but you can still get a commission on the higher tiers!
Alright, this is for the crazy-nuts Blaster Nation fans only! You're getting an original page, a cameo, all that other lower-tier stuff, and we're going to put your wacky ass in Blaster Nation!
That's right, you'll get a cameo role in Blaster Nation! It can be you, your original character, or hell, you can make it a friend or a relative or loved one...whatever, it's your choice! We'll try our best to weave you right into the BN universe! You might get to interact with some of Sucre Marron's biggest dorks, or your character might appear on the box of one of their favorite video games or animes! We'll work with you and figure it out!
But not only that, you're ALSO getting...
Mercy me! It's the original Blaster Nation prints we made for our first conventions! These have only been seen by a few con-goers in a very small selection of states, and we have a super small number of them left. That's why we're giving them away to the biggest Blaster Nation fans! Only 3 people allowed in this tier, but if you're completely insane, you can get them in the final tier!
NO CASUALS ALLOWED. THIS TIER IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE MOST HARDCORE BLASTER NATION FAN TO HAVE EVER EXISTED.
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE.
You get EVERYTHING. An original page, a commission, both sets of prints, the stickers, a personalized copy of the book, pdf, and wallpaper. We'll work with you and try to bump your cameo role into a more major role for a chapter. But most importantly:
You will get your own seven-page comic, drawn and colored by Leslie and written by me (unless you'd like to write it yourself).
We'll work with you to create a comic to your liking. This comic is JUST for you. Although Leslie will be drawing it digitally, we'll even print it out on nice matte paper and send it to you if you'd like. Of course, we'll also send you the digital version and a high-res PDF of it. Much like the commission, it can be SFW or NSFW, whatever you choose. No extreme ultraviolence, guro, or Lemonfont-style fetish stuff, please.
Risks and challenges
We'll be trying to get our book to the printers in July, which SHOULD give us plenty of time to get the books, finish the commissions, and ship everything sometime in November. However, considering that this will include up to 14 color commissions and a 7-page comic Leslie will have to make (provided all these limited backer reward slots get filled), it's definitely possible that there can be some delays. Sure, you would think 23 pictures would be easy enough to do in six months time, but we also have 3 Blaster Nation updates a week to do and 18 pages of our Slipshine-exclusive Tissue Box comic to do every two months. If this kickstarter succeeds, we're definitely going to be busy for awhile!
Other than that, I think things'll do pretty alright! We're giving ourselves a nice, cushy $7k to make sure we're able to afford absolutely everything, rewards, shipping and all. We're working with Nalem and Spanio from http://www.lighterthanheir.com/ who have a ton of experience working with professional printshops. Barring any catastrophes, I'm confident that we can get this thing done and shipped before the end of the year!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
