Getting the Iraq documentary Year At Danger out to the world

$16,082

141

The deal is we've shot the film, we've edited the film, we've shown the film in very limited screenings, but we don't own the music rights to distribute the film.

Lots of people like this film (see below to learn more and see reviews), and many people want copies, including several of the soldiers in the film.  But music rights are really, really expensive.  We've edited out as much music as we could, and the songs left over we believe are integral to the story and it would suffer without them.

We've had to sit on this for years and just want to get it out to the world.  At $15,000, your contributions will allow us to pay for the music rights for all the music used in the film.  Our stretch goal of $25,000 will also allow us to hire someone to help us with distribution.

Thank you in advance, and please take a moment to read more about the film below.

“An extraordinary achievement … truly remarkable … a thoroughly unvarnished account of a soldier’s life in Iraq. … this may very well be the best documentary of the year.”

                                       --Pete Vonder Harr, Film Threat

“They show raw emotion, holding nothing back and Metze, a brilliant storyteller, combines this with his dry humor and flawless wit.”

                                        --Fred Minnick, National Guard Magazine,
The Official Publication of the National Guard

“…unfolds like a traditional action film, really. … This is an incredibly powerful, emotionally moving and deeply resonant documentary.”

                                       --Mike Everleth, Bad Lit
                                      The Journal of Underground Film

“…immensely powerful…”

--Marc Savlov, Austin in Austin Chronicle

“A stunning first hand account … a side of war you can’t take your eyes off of.”

                                       --KTBC FOX7 News

“Must-see … anybody who has deployed or is about to will benefit from watching this movie with their loved ones.”

                                       --Seamus O’Connor, Military Times

“…touching and deeply affecting but never grinds a political ax to the left or right.”

                                       --Frank Kearl, Austin Film Festival

For operations in Iraq, the National Guard mobilized teachers, police officers, bankers, mechanics… and one filmmaker.

Nine days after getting married, Steve Metze found out he was being deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Metze, a West Point graduate, Desert Storm veteran, and documentary filmmaker, decided to pack a camera and document his year in Iraq.

Metze gets closer to his subjects than even the most embedded reporter, and is able to use his eye for filmmaking to bring back more than simple home movies. The resulting film is an objective look at the lives of National Guard soldiers. There are no politics on the front line, only personalities and Metze captures all of them in a film that combines humor with the, often grim, realities of a war-torn country and the brave soldiers who live there.

Year at Danger is a soldier’s story, told by the soldier. No bias, no headlines, just the day-to-day reality of life in Iraq.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk to this project is that the owners of the music will change their estimated fees to higher than we have budgeted for. However, we will get firm quotes from the music owners in advance, and we if we meet this kickstarter goal we will get this film out to the world.
