WHAT IS THIS??
Hi! It's a Kickstarter for a new moving picture by me, Colin Healey, and I really need your help! For Entertainment Purposes Only is my second feature film with lead actress Rachel McKeon, and the team behind 2015's award-winning Homemakers. It's a mystical character drama with a comedic touch, inspired by many true stories of fortune telling fraud... but also real psychic phenomena and occult tradition.
We've gotten love from IndieWire, Filmmaker Magazine, RISD XYZ, RogerEbert.com, and the Kickstarter staff calls us a "Project We Love". Help us out!
A MOVIE! I LIKE THOSE. WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
It's about a struggling storefront fortune teller in NYC named DINAH (Rachel McKeon), and her new client MARK, a rich man obsessed with obtaining the one thing he can’t buy: the love of his life (who wants nothing to do with him). Dinah convinces Mark that she has the power to let him take whatever he wants, but when Dinah's tricks and Mark's stalker side are revealed, Dinah must turn to a real occult community to keep herself out of prison...
K, I'M JUST HERE FOR THE TAROT.
And you'll get it! For my research, I'm diving deep into the world of tarot, astrology, crystal healing, chakras, and other beliefs about life, the universe, and the body that mainstream culture chortles at. We'll be recreating some gorgeous tarot characters live on film, and the mystical concept of a "third eye" plays a big part, too.
I'm making this movie about a fortune telling scammer because I'm interested in people who sell fantasy and dream and mystique to make money... and I'm making a movie about a man who wants to use money and magic to find love, because I think that men in our society are too quick to think they deserve affection and care without putting real work in.
I wanna explore what allows a headline-grabbing fraud to happen - psychic, client, investigator, and a greed culture we all participate in. But we're doing so through a lens of belief that tarot, astrology, mediumship and others are beautiful, intuitive, invisible arts undervalued in our society.
Plus, there's some almost-romance, some laughs, some light violence, and handmade special effects. Oh, and a little sex.
I LIKE THAT. WHEN ARE YOU SHOOTING?
This fall! But only if we can raise $35,000 buckaroos by August 25th, right here on Kickstarter! If we don't raise every dollar by that date, we don't get any of the dollars - that's how Kickstarter works.
So please, please, help us and give us dollars... because movies are really expensive! We need to pay and feed our cast and crew, and build some elaborate sets, and invent some special effects... and that's just the flashy stuff. Plus Band-Aids, because safety first.
SOUNDS LIKE A PARTY. ARE THERE PARTY FAVORS?
Yes there are, you brilliant patron of the arts! Starting at the $25 level you get access to a top-secret link to watch the movie online for 72-hours after its festival premiere. And we've also got a bunch of party favors.
Remember VHS tapes? I love love love VHS and you can pick up a limited-edition bootleg VHS of For Entertainment Purposes Only made in my personal VHS toaster.
For Entertainment Purposes Only will feature live-action tarot characters, and we're partnering with DOOB to preserve one of those characters in the form of an 8" full-color 3D-printed figurine - I'm going to drag an actor, fully costumed, to the DOOB shop in Soho and scan them and print them and then you can keep your For Entertainment Purposes Only tarot figure wherever you want, like next to your bed. We only print TWO, so get 'em quick!
...and we'll have an exclusive digital download of composer Matt Bryan's exciting For Entertainment Purposes Only score - a mix of analog synthesizer and medieval European folk instruments - and a digital copy of the final shooting script.
Illustrator David Barnett is coming on board to design new tarot art for a key scene near the end of the film based on the traditional Marseilles tarot deck, and we're offering limited edition prints of those...
...and David and production designer Mac Pohanka's Noble Signs is offering some of the amazing neon pieces that will feature as set dressing in the film. This is a rare and exciting chance to have a real set piece from the movie that will also look fantastic in your home. If you want people to think you're psychic, neon may help.
There's also opportunities to attend private screenings in NYC, Pittsburgh, Boston and Austin, attend a table read, or even appear in the film!
WHO IS THIS CAST AND CREW YOU'RE ASKING ME TO FEED?
Me, a.k.a. Colin Healey, and my amazing friends! The core team behind For Entertainment Purposes Only met as students at the Rhode Island School of Design's highly experimental Film, Animation, and Video department, and we moved on to find more thoughtful, inventive collaborators in Pittsburgh, Austin, and NYC.
I live in a garden-level apartment in Brooklyn's Fort Greene, and I like lilies and making my own soda bread. I made my first film, Homemakers, in my other favorite city, Pittsburgh, but I'm actually from the dusty hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. Homemakers won several awards in its festival run, before being released by Factory 25 and FilmBuff in fall 2015. The New York Times called it "a raggedy ode to the DIY ethos" and Bust Magazine said "Healey nails it." (You're the bust, Bust!)
Heading the cast as Dinah is the brave, bold, and ballsy Rachel McKeon, who also played the lead role in Homemakers. No less a publication than The Hollywood Reporter raved about her "body- and soul-baring performance" as Irene.
Our favorite director of photography Ben Powell is back. Just like on Homemakers, Ben's excited to stretch the limits of no-movie-lights cinematography. Expect a lot of neon and streetlights this time. You might know Ben from his amazing Mississippi river towboat documentary BARGE (SXSW, Full Frame 2015) or his work lensing A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story (SXSW 2015).
Producer Ian Bell is leading the charge on this one. Meanwhile, returning from Homemakers is all-star producer and editor ("preditor") Dave Schachter, and composer Matt Bryan, whose delightful soundtrack for that film was just released by Factory 25. Rounding out the producing team is whiz kid from Down Under Chloe Olman. In the great city of Austin, Texas, Triad Media is offering us a range of services to help keep costs low, including their own Landry Gideon, our favorite sound guy and extra-favorite morale captain. Mac Pohanka is our exciting new production designer, and he's bringing along his Noble Signs crew who do such amazing neon work all around New York City.
We'll convert your dollars to food and location fees and fabric and special effects using commerce.
CAN YOU PUT SOME KIND OF CONCLUSION HERE AT THE BOTTOM?
Yes :) Thank you so much for learning about our Kickstarter. I can't urge you enough - you're going to love this movie, and we really need your help making it. We need money but we also need help getting the word around - please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and share our Kickstarter with your friends. Me and the entire cast and crew of For Entertainment Purposes Only will never forget what you did for us this day.
Risks and challenges
Movies are hard to make. There are a lot of moving parts and they take time to get in place. You have to make your own luck. We're proud to say we made it through once, and we're ready to do it again. This latest film will shoot this fall 2016, but we can't make guarantees on when the film will be completed or released. What we can promise you is that as soon as it's ready to be awesome, we'll share it with the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
