About

A photo frame for your pet's collar. A simple, yet very personal frame that turns your pet's collar into a timeless focal point.

Collar Keepsake is a minimal low profile frame structure available in three sizes. The backplate with integrated hanging slot is a rigid structure, which friction fits (presses) into the collar frame. It’s light weight and made from injection molded plastic with a clear polycarbonate lens.

I designed this as a structure for your dog’s collar to wrap around—essentially making the collar itself the outer frame. The frames will be molded in a black plastic to allow your dog’s collar and the inserted photo to be the focus of the assembled product.

I chose a local company in Greenville, South Carolina to produce the Collar Keepsake frames. A stand alone injection mold will be produced that has an outer shell with interchangeable inner insert molds for the different size frames. The type of mold is a “cold runner mold” with ejector pins. This will give us the ability to produce 1,500 frames per day.

The main use of Collar Keepsake is as a memorial to a beloved pet, but the small size can also be used for a cat or a dog collar that your pet has outgrown.

In a few minutes you could change your pet's collar from a forgotten memory into an attractive center piece to hang in your home.

Injection molding is expensive. It will cost $15,000 total for all three molds to be created. Of course, like any other product, there are costs associated with each piece: the plastic, the polycarbonate cover, packaging, graphic design services, advertising, etc.

The break-even funding amount is $30,000. This would only cover the production of the molds, packaging and production of the finished product.

Dogs have always been a part of my life. My mom rescued my first dog six months before I was born. She was a collie mix named Coney, and she lived until I was sixteen.

I currently have three dogs: Grubby, Spooky and Pixie. In total, I've had 10 dogs as companions throughout my life.

In 2003, a very special rescue dog of mine,“Batty Suz,” suddenly died. I wasn’t ready for her departure and wanted to keep her presence in the house. I made a wooden structure to display her collar and tags and glued her photo onto the front. Since that time, I've made two more collar frames for two of my other dogs that have passed away: Bucko (2006), and Chumley (2010).

I began to wonder what most people did with a beloved pet’s collar after their pet has passed on? Would they also like a keepsake for their beloved companion? After making the first rudimentary prototype for a collar frame thirteen years before, I have now designed one that gives everyone a way to pay tribute to their best friend.

To choose right size you'll need to measure the dog collar you are going to want to use with your Collar Keepsake. Use the graphic below to determine the proper size.

1. Unbuckle the collar and measure the distance from the buckle to the hole where it's normally buckled.

2. That distance is the equivalent of the circumference in the measurements below.

3. Determine if you can go smaller or larger to pick the appropriate Collar Keepsake size.

4. Pick the size that best matches your measured circumference of your collar.

When you receive your Collar Keepsake frame you might have to make minor adjustments to get the collar to fit tight, but as long as you have room to work with (larger or smaller) you should be fine.

Risks and challenges

If this project funds at a huge level there may be logistical issues of getting all of the products injection molded in a timely manner.

I met with three injection manufacturing companies and selected a a company based in Greenville, South Carolina that I think was best suited for the project. As soon as the molds are made they have the ability to produce 1,500 frames per day. If necessary, I will have a second set of molds made in order to double production ability.

Be assured, all Collar Keepsake frames will be shipped as they are completed and I will of course keep you posted of any delays in production.

As for the artwork, I don’t foresee any problems. I have been making a living as a full time artist for 18 years. I am represented in ten galleries and participate in ten large art festivals per year. If all of the artwork rewards are claimed I will cancel my fall and winter art shows to devote my time to completing the rewards.
