How'd we get here?
It's been over nine years since my brother and I opened Black & Brew in downtown Lakeland. As a coffee house we immediately found ourselves longing for a local roaster to partner with. Instead we were forced to look outside of Lakeland and eventually selected a roaster in Tampa to import our coffee from. With each year that passed we wondered if Lakeland would ever see a local roaster.
We understood well, that in specialty coffee, freshness makes all the difference and felt somewhat helpless with our lack of control over this quality component. After waiting, and then trying to convince others to do it, I was finally challenged by my own employees at Black & Brew to stop complaining and do something about it.
They were right. The time is right.
Lakeland deserves artisans. In my travels to cities like San Francisco, Nashville, Asheville, Denver, L.A. and others, I found a common thread in that all of these places had amazing craftspeople who were dedicated to creating products unique to the local landscape. This specialization over generalization results in higher quality, which creates more depth and a unique identity for the community. If you look closely, you'll see this movement starting to bud in Lakeland. Get ready. It's going to be awesome!
A small-batch coffee roastery.
Patriot will be a roastery, meaning it will have no store front. However, our goal is to create a deeper coffee experience for our customers. Frequent public cuppings at the roastery will be held to allow customers to sample coffee from all over the world and learn about what is involved in crafting the perfect cup. Specialty coffee can be a bit intimidating and sometimes even pretentious. Our goal is to make the experience approachable and fun.
Coffee will be sold from our cart at the weekly Downtown Lakeland Farmer's Market, through local retailers and restaurants, including Black & Brew, as well as through the Patriot webstore (coming soon). Customers will also be able to sign up for coffee subscriptions in which coffees are automatically delivered directly to them on a weekly, bi-monthly or monthly basis.
All coffee will be roasted in small batches, enabling us to pay extra special attention to the roasting of our green beans. We want to respect the hard work that's gone into cultivating this wonderful seed. The best way to do that is to put a lot of love into each batch.
What's in a name?
The name was a simple way for me to honor my brothers and sisters who have served alongside me in the armed forces. It is my hope that I can somehow continue to serve them into the future through this company. On another level, it's my goal for the brand to challenge people to think harder about their potential to make an impact and to embody the spirit of the original Americans - the Industrious, Pioneers, Risk Takers, Rebels, Entrepreneurs, Optimists, Change Makers, Idealists, Leaders, Visionaries, Innovators and so on. These exceptional individuals risk everything to make our country great, and continue to work to preserve and improve our way of life. These are the true patriots.
You can call me and idealist, but I will simply agree with you.
Kickstart this project!
Opening a roastery is expensive! We've invested quite a bit already, including the purchase of our commercial roaster which is currently being manufactured to our specs. Your backing will help us to purchase a few more equipment pieces as well as improve the roastery space for when you come and visit. We've assembled some pretty slick rewards for you as a thank you for your commitment to helping us get to opening day. (*fyi - All shipping costs are included!) It's $15,000, all or nothing! Lofty, we know, but we have faith we can do it with your help.
Thank you for even considering it. At the very least, if you are unable to participate, you can be involved by spreading the word. Share the project on facebook, twitter and other social media. Play a part in furthering the local artisan movement!
Risks and challenges
With any project there are inherent risks. The biggest risk in supporting us is a potential delay in the building improvement process. You never quite know what you'll uncover when you start a commercial construction project. Rest assured, however, that your rewards will be delivered in a timely manner. After all, I want you to be experiencing fresh roasted coffee as soon as possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
