About

What is the Activ8?

The Activ8 is a hand-held, touch screen device that comes preloaded with a carefully crafted suite of applications designed to make the operation of a 3D printer easy and efficient for both professionals and enthusiasts. The Activ8 combines the best open source software created by the 3D printing community with our own custom operating system to produce an elegant and powerful new way of interacting with your 3D printer. The operating system has been specially designed to be compatible with any RepRap based 3D printer (Please check the compatibility section).

For Casual And Experienced Users

Creating our own custom operating system has meant that we could tailor make the ideal experience for both casual and experienced users of 3D printers. For casual users we’ve made it easier than ever before to download your favourite designs from the internet or cloud and have them printing in minutes. See something in Thingiverse that you like? Simply download directly to your Activ8 and hit the print button, it's that simple!

For more experienced users we’ve integrated some of the most powerful tools to give the highest levels of customisation and control. We’ve integrated Active 3D’s custom pronterface which combines Slic3r with a .STL and .Gcode viewer. We’ve also added applications such as Skeinforge, Cura and Meshlab, to give the most experienced 3D printing enthusiasts the highest level of control over their 3D printer.

Its All In The Software

We have preloaded Activ8 with some of the best tools to make it a truly exceptional device including:

Active 3D Pronterface - Our own custom version of Pronterface which incorporates Slic3r, with a .STL and .Gcode 3D viewer and plater.

Repetier-Server - A multi-printer, multi-connection printer server that handles the communication with 3d printers.

RepG - Drives MakerBot Replicator, Thing-O-Matic, CupCake CNC, RepRap machines and generic CNC machines.

Slic3r, Cura and Skeinforge - All three of these programs convert a 3D model into G code instructions for a 3D printer. Most printers are designed to work optimally  with one of these programs, so we’ve included all of them.

Octorprint - An application that allows you to operate your 3D printer wirelessly.

Meshlab - Allows for the processing and editing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes.

Web browser - An integrated Web Browser that can be used to access and download all your favourite 3D designs straight from the internet.

Physical and Virtual keyboard -  Key to any touch screen device is the inclusion of a virtual keyboard, which was created to fully utilise all the space on a 10 inch touchscreen. We also realise that Virtual keyboards are not to everyones taste so we are including a wireless keyboard alternative that comes packaged with every Activ8.

Custom OS - All these programs come packaged in our very own custom Operating System built on Debian Linux OS.

Our Models

We've created two distinct versions of the Activ8, one with and one without a rechargeable battery. All models come with a 10.1 inch touch resistive screen, inbuilt WiFi and a free wireless keyboard and stylus.

The battery on the top range model lasts for approximately 4 hours and comes in at £400. The base contains all the same features apart from the battery and retails at £350.

Prizes!

Available to download

Open source is a big part of our design philosophy. Our own device just wouldn't exist today if it hadn't been for the hard work of the 3D printing community. Thats why our final OS and designs, will be released for download, and we are very much looking forward to the new exciting directions members of the community will take it.

Beyond that almost anything on the device, with the right know how can be altered or changed. The case is easily taken off with the removal of a few screws allowing our users to alter most of the internals.

Why we need your help

The money raised from this kickstarter will go towards:

  • Finishing the design and development of our device and so making the Activ8 truly complete.
  •  Ensuring that the device is compatible with as many printers as possible.
  • Delivering our initial production run of the device and sending them to you.
  • Designing and building a forum to act as a base for members of the community.

Compatibility

It is our goal to have the Activ8 working with every RepRap based 3D printer and we are currently continuing to test the Activ8 with every available board we can get our hands on. Whilst there is no reason why any RepRap board shouldn't work (all the drivers come preloaded in the OS), we can only guarantee that they work with the ones we have physically tested, which are:

Melzi, Printr Board, Arduino/RAMPS, Duet, RUMBA and Rambo.

We will continue to update this section throughout the Kickstarter campaign. If your unsure whether or not your board type will work or would like to find out if it is currently being tested, please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We are also committed to continually updating the firmware and adding to the number of supported printer boards beyond this campaign.

Technical Specifications

Many of the processes associated with 3d printing are graphically intensive and so the Activ8 comes equipped with one of Arms latest dual core processors, along with 16 Gigabytes of High speed storage to ensure that you can always have all your designs ready at your fingertips.

Each Activ8 unit will be assembled by the Active 3D team in Tunbridge Wells (UK).

The internal electronics for the device will be shipped from Europe and the external casing will be produced locally.

Production Plan

 Our Story

The Activ8 was originally designed to fit on to the front of one of the new printers we are developing. However, as we continued to add more features to the device, we realised that it was strong enough to become a stand alone device . Here we show the original prototype version (left), the first 3D printed case (middle) and the final prototype (right).

 Special Thanks Go To...

We also think its important to mention that the Activ8 simply wouldn’t be possible without the years of hard work put into members of the 3D printing community in making all the best software and then releasing it entirely open source. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have put the time and effort into creating all the wonderful programs packaged into the Activ8 and would like to specifically mention the following:

Kliment (Pronterface), Enrique (Skeinforge), Martijn Elserman, Erik De Bruijn and Siert Wijnia (Cura), Alesandro (Slic3r), Gina Häußge (Octoprint), Tony and Roland Lock (Think3DPrint3D), Richard Horne (RichRap), Andy Hingston (T3P3) , RepRap Magazine, Camiel Gubbles (Mendel-Parts), Airtripper, Johann Rocholl (Rostock and Kossel), Brook Drumm (Printrbot and Printrboard), Ari Isaacs (ShapeDo), Josef Prusa (Prusa Mendel), Chris Palmer (NopHead) and finally Dr Adrian Bowyer, the father of RepRap.

Risks and challenges

We have spent a lot of time working on the design and implementation of this project, we have working prototypes running our working custom operating system all of which have been thoroughly tested to ensure that everything runs smoothly on launch.

If our campaign is particularly successful we could see delays in the delivery of some of the key components, however this isn't the first time we've produced, manufactured, and shipped a large number of complex machines.

Our priority will always be in meeting our commitments to our backers and we feel confident that we have taken enough steps to minimise the risks of the project.
