What We’re About

Hi there! We’re Emily and Anna: Brooklyn-based sisters and best friends, and the editorial and art director (respectively) behind Milky

We created Milky because we wanted to offer a new kind of content about food for women. We celebrate who you are, without offering advice on how to look or eat. Our stories speak to food as something that shapes our experiences and enriches our lives.

We also wanted to support women making incredible things, so Milky surfaces exciting new work and candid conversations with artists, chefs, musicians, novelists, fashion designers, and others in pursuit of their creative dreams.

Milky is published biannually and sold throughout the United States. Not only is it beautiful and meticulously produced, it’s nonjudgmental and warm.

Our First and Second Issue

Our first issue, released in December of 2017, features the chef Claire Welle of Otway; the musician/producer Laetitia Tamko, AKA Vagabon; the artist and creator of Bad Taste, Jen Monroe; the modern dancer and personal chef, Alexandra Albrecht; plus other amazing women working in design, food, fashion, and television.

The response has been thrilling, and a lot has transpired since then: We’ve earned an ever-growing, dedicated readership; we’ve distributed the magazine throughout the US in 25+ stores; and we’ve produced a second issue. And, oh yeah — we’re pretty damn sure we’re on to something here!

Without revealing too much, we’ll say that we are beyond excited to release Issue No. 2. We’ve worked with a crazy-talented team of photographers, writers, and other contributors to produce smart, beautiful features on inspiring women. We meet the chefs Clare de Boer and Jess Shadbolt of King; the novelist Kathleen Alcott; the baker and author of Black Girl Baking, Jerrelle Guy; the creator of @breadfaceblog, Bread Face; the artist Aria McManus; the co-founder of Tilit, Jenny Goodman; plus other super interesting women making their creative mark.

Where You Come in

In order to achieve of our goal of making Milky sustainable, we need help covering the cost of producing, printing, and shipping Issue No. 2.

We’re a young publication and we operate on a modest budget. While we now pay our contributors, Anna and I don’t pay ourselves quite yet (this also applies to a couple of our close friends, who generously donate their time). And while Milky is beautifully printed, it’s done very economically: We work closely with our printer and make choices that elevate the overall look of the magazine without heavily impacting cost, like a spot-gloss finish on our masthead and cover photo.

We’re working hard to keep our costs low because we want to create a third issue, and a fourth, fifth, sixth… You get the picture. Even still, every issue comes with production, printing, and shipping costs, and ours total $10,000.

With your support, we’ll be able to cover these major expenses, which in turn means that we’ll be able to start producing a third issue this summer.

It also means that we’ll be in a better position to keep running with this concept — making and releasing issues, growing our readership by printing more copies, and eventually earning enough funding through sponsorship to cover costs like these.

Huge thanks to Tina Vaden for making this kick-ass video; to Thomas Gibbons for his incredible support and creative direction throughout the making of Issue No. 2; and to our family, friends, and contributors for joining us on this journey!

Risks and challenges

Independent publishing is challenging, and it’s possible that we may not find a way to make our magazine sustainable long-term.

That said, we’re feeling good! We know that our desire to offer a new kind of content about food for women — and support creative work while we’re at it — will continue to attract readers who share our values. And we’re confident that over time we’ll be able to cover our major expenses with funding earned through sponsorship.
