I want to spend a month in a studio with a band and a choral group. Leonard Cohen meets Public Enemy is the basic idea.
a recording project
Since 1998 I've been putting out a new record every year. Most of them have been stripped-down acoustic affairs, with just me and maybe one or two other musicians. A few times I've gotten it together to spend many thousands of dollars in a studio with a band to make a CD. These are the records I'm proudest of, and the ones that include the songs that tend to get listened to the most, mostly in the form of the free downloads I make available.
When I used to tour ten months out of the year and I didn't have a kid yet, I could afford to splurge on the occasional bigger-scale recording project. Now I only tour six months out of the year and I simply can't afford to spend my limited earnings on recording projects like that. I can always manage to make another solo acoustic CD once a year – that I can handle myself. But what I'd really like to do is spend a full month in a studio with a bunch of other musicians and make a great record with a big, full sound involving a band and a chorus, a sort of musical confluence of Leonard Cohen and Public Enemy.
I like the Kickstarter model, where if I can raise the $10,000 necessary to spend a month in the studio to make a kick-ass recording with musicians who are being paid decently for their time it will happen and it will rock. If I can't raise all the money I need for this project, your contribution is automatically returned to you and I'll make a solo acoustic CD instead, no assistance required for that.
You can hear primitive acoustic versions (recorded with an iPhone) of some of the songs I want to record for this project on my YouTube page -- http://www.youtube.com/drovics -- including "Holy Land 5," "Meanwhile in Afghanistan," "If Only It Were True," "Breivik," "Khader Adnan, Bobby Sands," "Steal This MP3" and "Occupy Wall Street."
If I do raise the money for the recording project by the end of July I will then start making plans for the studio and getting the musicians together for the recording, which would actually happen after I return home from my fall tour. If I exceed my $10,000 goal I'll spend it on various forms of advertising to promote the CD (Facebook, Google, promotional videos on YouTube, etc.).
Your support is much appreciated! Please spread the word about this project! I need to raise all the money by the end of July...!
