The First Stretch Goal Has Been Reached!

Posted by Jim Searcy (Creator)

In barely 24 hours, the first stretch goal has been reached! Congratulations everyone, and once more, THANK YOU for your tremendous support!

For this new campaign, we have many ideas. Since we have chosen to mainly go for digital and software bonus content, we will be able to take the necessary time to realize them properly (and as you will see, some of them will require quite a bit of efforts!), without delaying the delivery of the bulk of the rewards. We also have other types of bonuses in mind... which we will inform you of in due time!

It is now time to reveal the first stretch goal!

We have worked very hard this year, and the files of the Limited Edition of Book 2 – Travels have all been sent to the printer. With this first threshold, we will be able to finance an express delivery so that we may directly hand you your rewards during Gen Con! The campaign will be over on August 11th, and we will be in Indianapolis starting from August 15th to meet you. You get your rewards four days after the end of the campaign, not bad uh?

Then, the following week, we will go to Toronto's Fan Expo, where you will be able to get your rewards as well. Of course, it implies that our printer will do their part correctly, in due time, and that the express delivery goes without a hitch.

We will have to be organized: later during the campaign, we will ask who would like to come get their rewards at Gen Con or at Fan Expo. There will be 100 “Farl Collector” bundles available at Gen Con, and 50 at Fan Expo. If we run out, your rewards will be sent along with those of the other backers.

The next stretch goal has been set at $45K, and here it is:

Talk to you soon,

Sincerely,
The Esteren Team

I agree with the wage increases for the artists. I remember another publisher doing something similar as their artists didn't earn much for their hard work. As someone who used to work for an art materials company... I know many people don't realize just how very expensive art supplies are.

Taking books to GenCon is a good idea. Although I won't be there, it is important to promote the game. A game system with only 50-100 fans (no matter how loyal they are) is a dead game system. Although as a stretch goal... it's kind of weak. It's a good business decision, but maybe not such a good choice as a goal for Kickstarter backers.

      Kai,

Thanks for this complete feedback and I must say I agree in several points. All of your feedbacks are precious, we will think about them. As we said, a KS campaign is a living process and we will work together with you the community, the editor and us the team, but also our partner Studio 2 to propose exciting - and still realistics - contents for the following stretch goals. I can not promise anything but we will do our best,
      Cheers,
      Nel

I completely agree with Kai: Those Stretch Goals aren't bad, but they have been communicated and placed wrong.

    4. Kai S. on

Nel, I'm not complaining about your timeline or the estimated delivery date. Even if shows up in late October that'd still be an awesome delivery date and totally reasonable. There's other KS that I backed quite some time ago that still didn't deliver.

I think the problem with these stretch goals lies mostly in the way they were communicated and their placement in the list of possible stretch goals. If you look at your second stretch goal (releasing Book 0 for free), the Fate Core KS had a similar stretch goal but they announced this at a much later time and in the middle of other stretch goals. In my opinion this made it easier for backers to appreciate this stretch goal as it was just one goal amongst a lot of others that were aimed directly at the backers. Putting this stretch goal up front as one of the first goals gives of an underwhelming impression and could alienate some backers, a feeling that could have been prevented had this stretch goal just been used at a later time.

The second thing is communication. You announced these stretch goals with much fanfare and even did a preliminary update to inform us about the upcoming second update with the stretch goals. In my opinion these two should have been in the KS project description from the beginning, this could have lessened the disappointment when a non con-going backer sees these first goals and realizes he does not profit from them. Without the huge build-up this could have went much smoother.

BTW: Sorry for the typos in my last posting, typing on an iPad during a train ride is not my prefered choice of writing. ;-)

Christina >> Yes, all peldges are concerned. So it is OK for Tri-Kazelian.
Kai >> As you say, your disappointment is equal to your interest in our work. Anf for this, from the heart, really thank you. Besides that, a campaign in July and October delivery ... I really think this is reasonable? But I understand your feeling, I am sorry for that.
Chapel >> Thanks for your feedbacks. We are always happy to have feedback. Really, it makes us think and improve. But the red line is the courtesy and respect. So thank you for saying it politely :)
Storm >> We do not think the backers would react for $ 5, but I feel that it's a symbol. A matter of principle. In a way, I understand what they are saying to us. Personally I do not agree because the spirit of sharing should prevail. But I can certainly understand!

Thanks all of you for your feedbacks, we will think and discuss about them with our editor,
      Cheers!

@chapel this is a free 5$ for each people.

      A load of money indeed

      lol

    7. chapel on

Hmm, how do I say this politely? As non-francophone european backer I feel discriminated against.
But I really hope the next stretch goals will be better.
The second is so-so. It devalues kind of Greater Shadow and High Shadow, but I understand your intentions.

    8. Storm Blade on

I buy that, the fact that it will help the spreading of the game..

Any news for the future about Esteren "physical" minis, could be an asset though.

      imo

    9. Kai S. on

Just wanted to point out I'm disappointed because I'm really excited about this book and want to get my hands on it as fast as possible. And now a few people will get theirs way before anybody else does. Seeing that you usually ship the books to the european backers last I will probably once again be one of the backers who get their books last. That actually maked it worse hearing about some backers getting their books early. Now I can understand your reasoning from a business point of view, but personally I'm disappointed. The second stretch goal evokes the same feelings. As mentioned by Simon I already own several versions of Book 0, so this is useless for me. Once again I can understand your reasoning, but I think these stretch goals would habe made more sense a later time during this KS.

I agree with Jussi, anticipating the next stretch goals with great interest.

    10. Christina G. on

I'll admit it I'm bias because I'm going to Gen Con so for me this stretch goal is very exciting! This isn't the first time I've seen a company allow backers to pick up goodies early at a con. I've seen it happen at a lot of international cons too. I think it is a great idea, even if I'm a bit jealous of the convention go-ers.

Jim, is the books available at the con only for the Farl Collectors? I backed at the Tri-Kazelian.

Jussi >> Thanks :) In fact we really hope to send your rewards before october but wait and see. There might be some issue with printer or shipment.

James >> We are very glad to go to Toronto! We can't wait. We must drink a beer or something after the show with the Esteren community there.

Eric >> Don't worry, there will others stretch goals. Please be happy for this lucky few and for us, the team. It is so great to hold in your hand your book after so much work on it! I really hope you will love the others Stretch goals :)

You camp to gencon with book 0 and 1. Part of the reason for kick starting is exclusive content. Or else why not wait to buy it off the shelf? If the product won't happen without KS support then it makes sense to cater to KSers as a whole. Not a select few.

I've seen many Kickstarter projects announce early pickup at specified conventions before and I'm always a little disappointed that I can't attend them to pick up my rewards. I've not seen one announced for the Toronto FanExpo before. I look forward to seeing you guys there.

      Jussi,
We will take some holidays after Toronto (we are only humains after all haha), and some of us come back to France around the 15th september. So, in fact you should have your rewards before october but we prefer to announce you some good news with delivery in advance ( a great and rare thing for Kickstarter :p) than to announce beginning of september and need to announce delay.
I really hope you will like next stretch goals and ALSO that your understand our point of view,

      Thanks,
      Nel

Apologies for being a bit dense here, but if 150 copies of the Farl Collector hardware are printed, done, and delivered so that GenCon attendees can get their complete rewards four days after the campaign closes ... what are the rest of us waiting the additional two months for?
Otherwise, I must agree with the universal sense of disappointment with the stretch goals announced thus far. I have little interest in digital content -- although I can appreciate that the cost structure for reproducing and distributing such is ... more attractive, let us say, than for physical content. Nor will I attend any of those Cons. I therefore anticipate announcements of further stretch goals with great interest...

Kristian, The discussion is very interesting. The "Kickstarter" phenomenon is amazing. You are perfectly right, you back a project, not a compagny. This project is Book 2 Travels was funded in two hours. And now we are talking of stretch goals. The famous "stretch goals"!

Very interesting because they are not obligatory but have become a custom. If we follow the reasoning, a backer support project and stretch goals are just bonuses.

Tradionally the stretch goals have become additions to improve the backed project. Add materials, aids game .. it's great. We are proud of the book 0 but it was also a lot of suffering. And a few months behind the schedule. We want to avoid this trap and imagine another way to deal with stretch goals.

And this time, why these objectives could not benefit the entire Shadows of esteren series? The entire RPG community? Or we, the team? And of course you, the backers. In fact, by stretch goal, we can hear: "we will tell you what is done with the extra money." Here are just a few questions, to open the debate that I find exciting. It is up to us to invent Kickstarter, all together.

For example, one of the stretch goal expected was wage increases for the artistic team, me included. It is an idea that we have taken another Kickstarter, Exalted if I remember correctly. Nobody really lives from Esteren, we do it in the evening after work. But I think we're going to ask your opinion by voting. It is thanks to you that we are there, it's up to you to decide.

Please share with us your thoughts!
      All the best,
      Nel

I am probably bias as I am attending GenCon but I think this is a good idea. There are many companies that release a nice new RPG at GenCon and then disappear after that because they fail. Being able to show up to this GenCon with a couple of new rule books will show that you guys are a) able to produce more product and b) able to maintain the level of quality that people saw on Book 1. That well increase sales and ensure you guys keep making and translating them.

      @Jim
I completely understand your reasoning and it is always good for the creator and for the whole RPG community that more people get to know the product.

But as a kickstarter backer, I back the proposed product not the producing company directly or the community as a whole.

We had planned to go there and Canada severals month ago. As you can guess, a trip to US and Canada does not prepare one month before the start of the convention.. But without your help, we would not have had the Book 2 since they had arrived too late. So here I give you indeed my personal point of view. Thank you because thanks to you all, we will have the books out there and some backers will get their rewards. By the way sorry for my bad english...!

Maybe the first goal would've been better if it has been communicated in a different way, Nel? The update text reads as a bonus for backers attending this Cons, your comment reads like the Team wouldn't be able to go there without the stretch goal.

You completely due to post your comments honestly. And I thank you for that. We love feedbacks, good or bad. It is also our way of doing things: without your help we would not have had these books at GenCon. We prefer to tell you frankly that this money will be used to pay express shipping rather than announcing a bogus goal.

Let's say this first stretch goal benefits some people and especially to the team. The second is for the entire RPG community. There will be others stretch goals just for you dear backers. Trust us on this :)

I can certainly see the advantages to you, Nel, and I really hope Gencon is successful for the team. I'd love to be there, so have a great time for me! I just know you've got some great stuff up your sleeve (as you have for the other KS's). As I said, disappointing for the first stretch goal. The second will be good for Esteren as a whole, and while I already have multiple Book 0s, I'm cool with that being a goal. I think it's important for a successful Kickstarter to get honest feedback, however, and that was mine.

    27. Roman on

Really glad this campaign is going so well. As I said in my post on the comments thread, I love the idea of the setting/theme.

Have to agree with the others- GenCon/FanExpo early delivery sounds like a given - if the books are ready anyone attending benefits. And I can see the value of publicising to a receptive audience at the conventions.

To make this a Stretch Goal? Maybe the team should have waited to a few days before announcing a more well thought out reward?

This does take a bit of a shine off this for me. Still let's wait and see where we get to next, althouh again I see not many of the pledge levels benefiting from the pdf of book 0 - am I missing something?

I see the positive effect of the second stretch goal, but I don't see it for the first one. There are many who can't make it to one of these Cons and beside not be able to meet you, they'll get their stuff later. Sorry to say, but this is really disappointing to me so far.

I understand that you prefer the stretch goal that benefits you directly. But also think about the positive things it brings to the Shadows of Esteren series in general. Besides, for us creators of the game, have the chance to introduce our new book at GenCon is really a chance. Hope you can understand and support us!
But do not worry, there is a lot to come ahead and I really hope you will love it,

Sorry, but I'm totally with Kai, Simon and Becky. This stretch goal is totally useless to many backers.
"Not bad" You ask? No, but disappointing.

Good, I'm not the only one who is meh about this stretch goal, and I'm attending Gencon. Honestly, I'm not all that interested in digital rewards, though I understand it's more cost affective.

    33. Becky, Oracle of Valoria on

This is a little anticlimatic, to say the least. The 30k stretch only applies to a select few who can make it to the cons. And the 45k stretch is equally underwhelming, as most of the levels already get either physical or pdf version of prologue, so you are offering us a stretch goal that we have already pledged for.

    34. Simon Stroud

I hate to, because so far you guys have managed two of best kickstarters I've been part of, but I have to second the disappointment. I've backed the previous two, and this, at Farl Collector, and the stretch goal is - allow someone else to get their stuff two to three months before I do? I live in Australia, I'm used to Gencon being the time everyone gets there swag ahead of me. But to set that as a goal s a bit...disappointing.

    35. Kai S. on

A bit disapoointed about this stretch goal. I won't be able to attend these cons and this stretch goal favors a select few backers who go there. I always thought of stretch goals as something all backers would receive.
