About

I’m Kurt Osburn, fitness freak, bicycle enthusiast, and current Guinness two-time record holder for the longest continuous bicycle wheelie (11 hours in 1998) and the longest bicycle wheelie journey (2839.6 miles over 74 days in 1999), and I’m now attempting to break my own record in even less time!

Almost 20 years have passed since my last World Record feat and I’m ready to outdo myself again. In 2018, and at the age of 49, I will obliterate the 1999 record by attempting the Longest Fastest BMX Wheelie ever: 2,839.6 in 45 days (beating my own world record by 29 days).

In May 2018, I will embark on the 2839.6 mile one-wheel journey (once again!) from Hollywood, California to Orlando, Florida in order to beat my own world-record by 29 days. Not only will a new world record be set for the longest quickest wheelie, and only the second time ever completed, but it will be streamed live online for everyone to participate. Besides optimal camera setup and network connectivity, our state of the art wind-shielding and aerodynamic design prove that a 19-year difference in technology can drastically improve performance.

At the early age of one, Kurt Osburn experienced his first high-adrenaline ride on a set of wheels and became forever addicted the lifestyle. Born and raised in Southern California, which happens to also be the birthplace of BMX, Kurt was always riding some sort of wheeled vehicle growing up, whether it be a unicycle, tricycle, Green machine or the famous Big Wheel (think of the circus). Jumping off steps and curbs as early as three years old, he was born a daredevil. Kurt initially became aware of his evolving skills and abilities when he performed his first wheelie at the age of nine. That same year, Santa Claus brought Kurt his very own bicycle, which lead to him consistently following in older brother Danny’s tracks.

As Kurt grew up, he continued practicing wheelies, but also began to develop another deep interest: the Guinness Book of Records. The old-school paperback edition, being over three inches thick, contained the most amazing and unique records that he had ever read about, causing 13-year-old Kurt to officially begin his quest to break a record. Kurt believed that earning a spot in the second most sold book on the planet (behind The Bible), would be the ultimate achievement, so he got to work!

Kurt started training in earnest. Logging more and more time in the saddle. Building endurance. He studied martial arts in order to learn how to be more intune with his mind and body, to build concentration and to find hidden strengths. Finally, on one summer evening in a parking structure at Fullerton College, Kurt decided to test himself by riding on one wheel for ten hours forty-one minutes. Kurt accomplished this feat alone, but it was now time to attempt a second ride in front of officials for the Guinness Book of Records.

For his second attempt, Kurt dedicated his record to his childhood hero, and primary inspirational figure, Evel Knievel. Kurt’s other inspiration was the fitness guru Jack Lalane, who would always attempt to break his swimming records on his birthday, so on August 6, 1998 (Kurt’s 29th birthday), Kurt went for the world record in front of the entire nation. The Anaheim Convention center allotted an enormous auditorium for Kurt to ride in, directly across the street from Disneyland. In order for Kurt to keep his concentration, he requested that there not be an audience in attendance, so technology came into play and he offered a live stream for viewers at home, which was rare during those early days of the internet. August 6, 1998 also happened to be a slow day for news, so Kurt’s record-breaking attempt therefore had every major news network in Los Angeles in attendance, giving it coverage from coast to coast. However, six hours into the ride, all of Kurt’s training and determination came down to a leg cramp, and it was getting worse by the lap. Knowing that failing wasn’t an option, Kurt utilized his knowledge of martial arts, meditation and consciousness to gradually work the cramp out and push forward. Kurt rode for exactly eleven hours before deciding it was time to hop off, granting him the new official record for the longest continuous wheelie in history, which still stands today.

Guinness installed exhibits of his record in their museums worldwide, including a wax figure of Kurt on his bike in the Hollywood, CA museum. And the best part of it all? Both Evel Knievel and Jack Lalane personally congratulated Kurt after hearing about his accomplishment. It doesn’t get better than that!

This was just the beginning! With so much media attention, Kurt was determined to keep pushing it. He was determined to go big or go home. He was going to wheelie cross country from California to Florida. Kurt was going to Wheelie Across America! On April 13, 1999, with just three months of training and preparation, Kurt embarked on the 2839.6 mile journey from the Hollywood Guinness museum in California to the Guinness attraction in Orlando, Florida. Kurt rode on one wheel across eight states with only two close friends driving an RV support vehicle and a cameraman to document the journey.

In order for the record to be officially accepted by Guinness (Kurt was going to make sure it would be official!), he had to ride every mile on one wheel while having independent witnesses sign a journal at exact start and stop points. A person riding a wheelie, forty to fifty miles each day, at nine miles per hour on interstate 10, one of the most traveled highways in the United States, would garner quite a bit of attention. And it did! Drivers passing by gazed in awe at this crazy man riding along the highway on one wheel. Kurt even developed quite a following with the long haul truckers, who began communicate with him on his personal CB radio. Kurt’s handle was ‘Wheelie King’.

Crossing various terrain and environments, Kurt endured extreme heat, rain, humidity, three flat tires (all rear), relentless winds, and even hospitalizing illness. After being given steroid injections, Kurt finally reached his destination on June 25, 1999 (74 days and 1.8 million pedal revolutions later). Kurt became the first person in history to wheelie across the United States and the Guinness Attraction in Orlando, Fl had his bike there on display. Kurt’s record still stands today.

Almost 20 years have passed since his last World Record feat and Kurt is ready to outdo himself again. In 2018, and at the age of 49, Kurt will obliterate the 1999 record by attempting the Longest Fastest BMX Wheelie ever: 2,839.6 in 45 days (beating his own world record by 29 days).

Risks and challenges

This record attempt has been 2 years in the making, If we don't raise enough funds to pull it off it wont happen.
I have been preparing myself physically and mentally.
Since I've done this ride and exact same route in the past I am extremely confident I will be successful on all the logistics and challenges I face in order to complete this World Record Attempt.
