For the longest time, I've dreamed about the art of storytelling and sitting down and actually writing a series of children's books. Fortunately, I have found the right story to make the leap into the world of writing and illustrating (for children aged 4 years and up).
The Twig and the Three-Legged Pig is a 32 page full-colour illustrated children's book. It focuses on the unlikely friendship between a talking twig and a mysterious three-legged pig.
The story is *full* of hope, courage and magic! It shows that even talking twigs and three-legged pigs are special.
The story also touches on topics that are a bit more serious and it is different to anything you'll find on the bookshelves right now. As the twig is saved by a three-legged pig and is carried further into a magical world, he learns that the pig is curiously different from all of the other creatures who inhabit the forest.
More on the story
During autumn, and after breaking away from a tree (or as the twig puts it, "I am being tossed away"), the twig reveals to the world that he is indeed quite magical. The twig reveals his abilities to a bird, a bunny and a bee. But all have different reasons as to why they do not help him from sinking in a forest puddle.
As autumn passes and winter arrives, the twig is found by a mysterious and emotional three-legged pig who appears to be searching for something.
It is here that their journey into the world truly begins.
As awkward as it sounds, I had dream of a pig who unfortunately kept falling down. From there, I imagined what it would be like for a character to have a superpower or a disability. This idea grew into a vibrant children’s book with a magical twig and a three-legged pig as the stars of the show and most of all – reminds kids that everyone is different and special!
Why this story is important
I aspire to write books that are emotionally thoughtful and are challenging enough for children to learn about real world concepts. I believe there is a void in the children's book market for books that are a bit more challenging and serious. This book touches on the tougher topics such as discrimination, equality and inclusion in a fun and light-hearted manner (and within a fantasy setting) for children to learn from, be engaged in and for children to eventually come to understand in time.
It is a story where the full impact will vary depending on the age of the child reading the story.
One of my favourite verses from the story is:
as it encapsulates the hope, the mood and the longful nature of Mr. Pig.
I hope that children (and future generations) will be able to look back on this story and through the journey of a talking twig and a three-legged pig, learn from their friendship and their compassion towards each other and of the differences that make us all important.
Learning and Growth
By looking at a twig who is sinking in a puddle or towards a pig who is running a little bit funny, I hope children can discover empathy and compassion.
In addition to learning some emotional awareness, I wrote this story to encourage children to look at the world in a new and different way, to push their mind and their imagination as far as I possibly can so they can view the world in a richer, more creative and in a more magical light.
I love stories with twists and turns and especially surprise endings!
Without giving too much away, I am positive that both children and adults alike will be delighted by the way in which my story ends and the revelations to be discovered.

Here's another sample of one of my favourite parts of the story:
I want to pen children's books that will one day change the world. This is not your average picture book but one that encourages parents to open up lines of communication surrounding equality and inclusion. It's a vibrant story that reminds kids that everyone is different and everyone is special. There’s no need to be afraid of a talking twig who has magical powers. There's also no need to be afraid of a three-legged pig who runs a little bit funny, or sometimes falls down.
Growing up in an Asian household, being studious was everything. I believe emotional intelligence and emotional awareness is something that is often overlooked (especially within the school system), and kids need to be reminded that being different is not a reason to bully or laugh at others.
I want kids to go to bed each night with a heartwarming story that is ultimately about friendship, compassion and kindness. As such, I believe Kickstarter is the best place for independent creative projects to thrive and grow!
Important Notes (Possible Spoilers Below)
1. A large part of the story involves the twig's use of his magical powers. This happens a number of times in the book and is where the whimsy and lots of the fun comes from! But, as these are spoilers, I have left this part out of the video. This may have skewed the story to come across in a sadder way than intended (i.e. the story involves a magical twig as the protagonist as well as a sympathetic pig).
2. Please note that the cover art has been updated as at 3 July 2017. An updated version can be found on my website (robtranbooks.com) under the "Books" link. I will update the cover art as soon as the new proofs arrive!
3. As this is a children's story, the story does have a happy ending!
Here's one more page from the story!
If you can feel my enthusiasm, passion and love for writing creative stories that will (hopefully) one day make a difference, then please back my talent!
If $7,500.00 or more is raised, I will donate 50 books to various children's hospitals, public schools and charities within Australia.
If $10,000.00 or more is raised, I will create a free PDF colouring book of the entire 32 pages of The Twig and the Three-Legged Pig!
Risks and challenges
As with any book project, risks include printing delays, as well as funding issues. I have worked to mitigate these risks -- the book is in it's finalisation stage and I have sufficiently audited my budget to ensure that I will have sufficient funds to deliver all rewards.
As you can probably tell, the book is 99% complete. It is just going through some final editing tweaks and it is ready to be in your hands by September 2017.
If any delays do occur due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies, I will keep Kickstarter backers updated, not only through Kickstarter, but also directly on my website and across all my social media platforms.
