About

Wall Monsters is a castle-building, dice-rolling math battle for 2-4 players. (Ages 5+)

I developed Wall Monsters to be an alternative to my children and I playing games on devices.  I wanted to make the experience fun so that the subject I was teaching them, MATH, came easily.   I also wanted them to experience throwing a bunch of dice at a time, strategically building a castle, critical thinking, and feeling like a King or Queen.  Four years of development and play testing, with all ages of game players, has refined Wall Monsters into all that I could hope for.

How it works:

In Wall Monsters, players take turns drawing cards from the main deck. Each hand has a combination of walls and monsters, and monsters can be used to defend your castle and attack other player’s castles. As you draw and pillage castle wall cards, you seek to be the first to complete a square or rectangle castle. A gate card must be used in the last wall card space, and can also be used as currency to buy cards from a strategy deck. When you complete your castle first, you win the game and become The Ruler.

Where it really gets fun:

Each time a player attacks another, a math battle starts. The attacking player reveals all the monsters and strategy cards for the attack. The defending player then uses this information to decide whether to use their defending monster card. Add the numerical value of every wall card in your castle with the defending monster’s dice roll, to get the total defense value. Then the attacking player rolls dice for each of their monsters and adds any strategy card abilities to find the total attack value. The total attack value has to beat the defending player’s total defense value.  If the attack fails the castle is safe.  If the attack succeeds, the attacking player selects wall card pieces from the losing player's castle to add onto their own. This is done until one player finishes their castle by placing a gate in the last wall space making them The Ruler.

Risks and challenges

This is my first attempt at launching a Kickstarter for one of my games.
- To deal with this risk I have picked the brain of a friend who has two successful Kickstarters for games under his belt to do my best to skip making the small mistakes and accentuate the things he did right.

In my experience as a backer, one of the main challenges has been delivering the game on time.
- To address this issue I have talked with my primary manufacturing company and have more than doubled their timeline for production. I have also added a reward level for 5 people to receive a preproduction game in their hands by Christmas.
