I am very excited to announce that my first solo violin CD will be recorded and released this year by Et'cetera Records! This CD features works of Bach and Bartók and a brand new piece written especially for me by the young American composer David Fulmer.
Bach's C Major Sonata and Bartók's Sonata for Solo Violin have a lot in common: they both explore the possibilities of the violin in revolutionary ways, and are two of my favorite pieces to play. Furthermore, one could not have existed without the other: Bartók heard the great violinist Menuhin perform the Bach C Major and it inspired the Hungarian composer to write his own solo sonata modelled after the Bach. I have studied and performed both pieces for many years and it has been a dream of mine for quite some time to record them.
Another dream fulfilled by this project is the act of commissioning my very own solo piece. My friend and former school-mate David Fulmer, to my great pleasure, has agreed to write a piece for me! I have always been an enthusiastic advocate for contemporary music, so working with a living composer on this project is the perfect way to complete the program.
However, recording my interpretations of these pieces for posterity is actually only one part of this project. I want to share my love and knowledge of this music with all of you in a very unique and personal way. Above you can see a short version of a video I've made, describing my project. The full version can be viewed by clicking on the link below. Sit back and enjoy this 15-minute film where I explain my project in more detail!
My goal is to bring these pieces to as many people as possible: in concert halls, schools, office buildings, homes, churches...anywhere and everywhere.
As you can imagine, a project like this is expensive. Some of the costs include:
- a recording space for four days
- a sound engineer/producer
- a photographer/designer for the CD cover
- a filmmaker for the above films
- the commission to David Fulmer for writing my piece
- a space for the CD presentations (I intend to do one in the Netherlands and one in New York....my two adopted homes)
- a trip to New York to work on David Fulmer's piece with the composer himself
And the list goes on and on! Therefore, I'm asking for your help. Any little bit that you could donate to my project would be very much appreciated!
Risks and challenges
I realize that trying to successfully market and sell a CD of classical solo violin music will not be easy; there is a large risk that I will not break even with this project financially. However, on an artistic level it is very important for me to do this at this point in my career; it is my way of advocating for my art and 'spreading the love' the best way I know how, by presenting these extraordinary pieces with my own voice and connecting to my public. I hope you can help me to realize this project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
