Reprinting Isaac Newton’s Principia

Hi, I’m Jordi Anton - Founder and Editor of Kronecker Wallis, a small independent publisher based in Barcelona. We love books, design and the history of science; which was more than enough reason to begin our adventure three years ago, to re-issue major science books with a beautiful, modern editorial design.

We love the touch of physical books, leafing through them from time to time and feeling the pages beneath our fingers; all the more special when the contents of the book contains an idea that changed the world.

As a small independent company, we have chosen to crowdfund all of our projects, to be able to print as large a print-run as we can (reducing print costs and product price with great quality in design and materials).

Our first and best-selling book is Isaac Newton’s Principia. Now two years after printing -  no books are available in our warehouse. This book has only ever received wonderful comments and feedback, has generated a following for our brand and has received some great press coverage. It is a very special book for us and one we will be forever proud of.

Why are we here?  To share this project and ask for help in achieving our next milestone; to continue printing Principia and to keep this major book alive.

If we finish it successfully, the print-run will be short (only 15% more than those pledged for), so the chance really is unique.

Why is our version of Principia so unique?

With Isaac Newton’s Principia we took a different approach to the editorial design, than what is typically found in mathematical or physics texts. Graphs, formulas, theorems... are all designed by typography and minimalism enthusiasts.

We created a very detailed design; working with a creative binding technique which allowed us to present the three books as individual objects d’art.

Principia consists of three main chapters: the first, The motion of bodies; the second, The movement of bodies through resisting mediums and the third, The system of the world. Due to the large amount of information, we have chosen to divide the three chapters into three books (physically speaking). This option allows the reader to better understand how the book Principia is structured and in turn, makes it more practical to consult, as each book is easier to handle.

Therefore, we have opted for visible binding that leaves the spine bare, displaying a part of the book that usually remains hidden. This type of binding also helps us when reading the book, as it allows us to open it wider.

The geometrical graphic grid has been designed based on the three recurring elements in the content: text, notes in the margin and graphics. These three elements have marked out a flexible, organised and geometrical graphic grid that is adapted to all sections.

The inside covers of each section have a colour background to quickly indicate the beginning of each section, whilst the index pages are found in the middle of each book in a higher weight paper to force it open at this point.

Paper is related to the sense of touch that is so beloved of true book lovers. We have chosen paper designed for offset printing, Munken Polar, where the crisp white tone and its smooth uncoated surface provides an exclusive and natural feel. And a key aspect of any publication is the choice of typography. For this project we have chosen The Serif, a typeface designed by Lucas de Groot in 1994.

One last detail is the dry embossing on each of the covers of the three books with the letters alpha, beta and gamma, bringing a touch of elegance. This is how we wanted this book to be valued: it is a collector’s book and therefore people will treat it as such, with care and sensitivity.

The translation being used is the 1st American edition, translated by Andrew Motte. Carefully revised and corrected by N. W. Chittenden.

The book is designed and printed in Barcelona, and the paper manufactured in Italy on-demand.

We have created a book where color is the protagonist. From a cover that reflects the light to show us the tones that Newton described, to interiors tinted by his rainbow. The inner pages are also colored, making gradient color changes throughout the book and differentiating the sections through different colors. Turning the book into an explosion of color, with an elegant layout.

This book is unique, made almost by hand, with a small print run. A beautiful book to collect, touch, browse or offer as a gift. Transmitting the scientific culture that Newton gave us.

This small notebook was probably used by Newton from about 1664 to 1665. It contains notes from his reading on mathematics and geometry, showing particularly the influence of John Wallis and René Descartes. It also provides evidence of the development of Newton’s own mathematical thinking, including his study of infinite series and development of binomial theorem, the evolution of the differential calculus, and its application to the problem of quadratures and integration.” (Cambridge Library
